AHHHHHHH! Cam-bod-ia!! What a first impression! First I suppose a major update is in order seeing as Vang Vieng was my last entry! Looking back, we enjoyed the north of Laos more than the south, but still had a ball travelling south from Vang Vieng to Vientiane, the capital, to Savannakhet, Pakse, Tadlo, and Si Phan Don before leaving Laos. We called Vientiane our "business trip". The city itself is busy with activity including the morning market, which runs all day by the way, and an awkward duplicate of the arc de triomphe on the main boulevard. The city offered lots of very french-influenced architechture and we made the warm, fresh, baguettes a staple in our diet in Laos in general. We stayed 2 nights in Vientiane and filled the days with extending out Laos visas ... read more

After we recouperated from our time with the pigs and too much rough road travel for our tummies to handle we decided to venture out and check out what Kratie had to offer. We rented 125cc motorbikes and drivers for them and went to check out the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. There are supposedly less than 80 or so in the world and 20 or so appen to make a permanent home in 2 deep water pools in the Mekong River on the edges of Kratie. We hopped on the bikes (a first for us here!) and drove about half an hour to the site. There is a national park set up there and they are dedicated to saving this species which first became endagered because of poaching for their oils during the Khmer Rouge regime. ... read more

Whilst travelling, I've often sat in awe of travellers that have changed their itineries in order to be lazy, see more, or be with new friends. I usually find it quite difficult to change the plans I've made in my head as the domino effect is too much for my brain. HOWEVER, my time in Cambodia and with the gang I've met in Siem Reap has changed that. What's a weeks' difference within a year of travelling? I'm still learning the ins and outs of maximising the joys of life on the road. Soooooooo, I've not quite spead off to Vietnam and have instead joined Hester on an extended few days in Cambodia. From Siem Reap we boarded a bus to Kopang Chum. It was a straight road that gave us a view of many rice ... read more

Watching the freshwater dolphins! Ich genoss dafuer ... read more

My friend Phanna and I decided to head back to his hometown of Kratie (pronounced Kratchey) to visit his family and find and photograph the rare and mysterious freshwater Mekong Dolphins. (Please note that the original story with photos and links are here at http://ajarncharlie.livejournal.com/24110.html) Leaving from the riverfront in Phnom Penh at 8AM, we soon wound our way through the weekend traffic exiting the city and headed north along the Tonle Sap River. Crammed into the proverbial Cambodian Toyota Camry taxi with seven others ($35-40 per taxi for the trip from Phnom Penh to Kratie), I was allocated the space in the front seat jammed against the door, sitting on my feet as there wasn't enough room for both Phanna and myself to set on the seat and also allow space for the driver to ... read more
