Donc c’était super cool, ils nous restait ... read more

Hi everyone. Sorry it's been a while but you know how it is! Here's our next installment... 19.11.08 Last night we planned on a quite sedate evening but we got talking to a lovely couple from Adelaide, Adrian and Megan and spent the evening with them. Had a few too many large Tiger beers but tore ourselves away knowing we had an early start this morning - we suffered a bit but once we got to the Cu-Chi Tunnels, we weren't feeling too bad! Cu-Chi tunnels were what the Viet Cong used in the war to hide from the Americans. They were tiny - 70cm x 40cm and they had a whole living / hiding space over 3 layers under gound. We had the chance to go inside one of the specially widened ones (100cm x ... read more

In Kratie we honed our motorbiking skills in preparation for the jungle roads in Ratanakiri. Hiring a scooter for the day was the best thing we could have done and it saved a load of money. You go to Kratie to do pretty much one thing..spot the river dolphins, the only fresh water dolphins in the world. However when we arrived we found the price of a dolphin spotting trip had risen from around $5 to $9 plus moto hire - more than our budget would allow. So we decided to hire a motorbike to see the local area. To our delight the guy we hired it from told us about a bridge we could stop on to see the dolphins. Heading out through the villages and seeing local life was pretty special and the spot ... read more

Reluctantly, as our visa's were about to expire, we booked ourselves out of Don Det and Laos and onwards to Cambodia. We booked a bus to Siem Reap, where the Temples of Angkor are. This is a long was from the Laos border, so there was a stop overnight scheduled, which turned out to be in a place called Kratie. But first we had to cross the boarder, which was pretty funny. On the Laos side was a very small thatched wooden shack, with "customs" hand painted on in red paint. Behind the ''desk'' was a man desperately trying to look official. After leaving Laos, we alked a few metres down the dusty road with a group of goats to reach Cambodian immigration, which wasn't much better. We dutifully paid up and got our shiny new ... read more

This past week the volunteers and I ventured out into rural cambodia. We left with an aim to understand what much of the money our volunteerism goes towards. Early wednesday morning we all boarded an AIRcon transit bus bound for Kratie Province. It seems that with many things here-our timing was off. The bus was already rolling away as our volunteer courdinator made chase arms swinging about. After we boarded it didn't take long to see we were leaving Phnom Penh and the layers of the city began to melt away. Before long we transitioned from stucko and concrete as the primary building matierals and it became very apparent these homes took a much more organic approach. Bamboo and rough timbers providing framework. Another interesting clue we had left the city was the lack of gates ... read more

We got here after a 9hr epic bus journey..... We found a great guest house, which looked over the Mekong River, Kratie is known for its Fresh Water Dolphins called Irrawaddy and relaxed atmosphere. But you can see in years to come this will be a very popular place for tourists. We booked a 1/2 day trip on motorbikes with a driver to see the dolphins and sombok mountain(temple), the boat trip was about 1.5hrs and we saw lots of dolphins, its great to see them as they are diminishing fast, due to the over fished river and poluation. We stayed here for a few days to relax, our plans did change (quite a bit actually) as we thought from Kratie we would head for the mountains to Ratanakiri Province for treking, waterfalls, swimming, elephant rides ... read more

After a very short sleepwe woke up at about 6 and got downstairs to pay our bill and hop onto the bus. When the bus arrived it tootled around town for about 30 minutes before dropping us at the bus station to get onto the real bus to take us to Kampong Cham. After 5 hours we were becoming restless but the bus eventually arrived and delivered us to the side of the road. A very friendly Tuk Tuk driver helped us into his Tuk Tuk and we headed of to find the next bus that would take us to Kratie. After buying our ticket from a man at the side of the road and being promised that there would be a bus we were relieved when it arrived about 20 minutes later. Once onto the ... read more

After a brief stop back in Phnom Penh (most journeys in Cambodia have to be done via the capital) we were on the road again headed to the town of Kratie on the Mekong river. Our purpose, to search out dolphins. All though by this far into the trip we have seen more than our fair share of marine dolphins, these are different. Found only in the Mekong river these small and exceedingly rare river dolphins (approx 86 left in the wild) are well worth the 14 hour round trip by bus. We arrived in Krati late in the afternoon to find a typical, dusty and dirty, Cambodian town. Rather tired we booked in to the first guest house we found (having fooled the touts waiting for the bus by hiding in a restaurant). The room ... read more
