A small detour on the way to Siem Reap brought us to Kratie. The highlight of a trip to the area is a visit to see the Irrawaddy dolphins on the Mekong river. There are less than 100 dolphins left but 15 kilometres from town at Kampi they are always there to be seen. They don't come close to the boat though so the pictures are excusably poor. We spent a relaxing hour drifting in the river with occasional sightings. For the dolphin visit we once again hired motorbikes, and for the first time there weren't any automatic ones available. So we've now mastered gears, not really too complicated as it turns out. There was much debate about what to do next, continue up to the north east provinces or to Siem Reap for the Angkor ... read more

Sorry, this one got really long, but it has been absolutely amazing. As always, here is our favorite conversation from the road these past few weeks: “You buy bracelet?” “No thanks,” I replied. “Okay.” The little girl replied, disappointedly. “Where you from?” “United States.” “Oh, America. Washington D.C. capitol. Population about three hundred million. President George Bush. Alaska biggest state. Rhode Island smallest state. Honolulu capitol of Hawaii.” “What about Wisconsin?” “Umm…” The girl gives me a blank look. I ask myself if anyone ever knows anything about Wisconsin. “Now you buy bracelet? I give you special price, fifteen for two dollars?” “What do I do with fifteen bracelets?” I ask, thinking of the Wayne’s World scene discussing gun racks. “You give them to your girlfriend.” “I don’t have a girlfriend.” As I chuckle. She obviously ... read more

So we decided to head North to Kratie, which is on the way to Laos. In retrospect I should have thought more clearly about it since I need to go back to Phnom Penh regardless to get my camera from DHL and we are also planning to go to Sihanoukville, which is a beachy town south of Phnom Penh, so I’m really running all around Cambodia but there are positives that came from it as well. My concern beforehand was getting to Laos. I went to a bit of trouble to get the visa ahead of time while I was in Kunming so I can cross the border from Cambodia. I wanted to do it so I could see the rural countryside…but from some of my reading it didn’t seem like a road greatly traveled. But ... read more

We made it to Kratie (Krah-cheh) much quicker than we planned. We thought (been told) that we'd have to take a bus from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham, stay overnight, then take another bus the following morning. But...we took the bus to Kampong Cham ok, but when we got there we found three other backpackers wanting to get to Kratie in a hurry (even less time in Cambodia than we do) so we all piled into a taxi to Kratie. This was a couple of dollars more than the bus, but way faster. The driver took us the old, unpaved route, but we still beat the bus that had left a couple of hours before us. And saw some neat countryside at the same time. Kratie is a small town on the banks of the Mekong, ... read more

We had to stay 2 nights in Pnom Phen to get our visa for Loas, which was a bit of a pain but at least we got our visa hastle free, before we headed the 6 hrs north east to Kratie. We decided to stay in Kratie as it broke the journey up to the border and we also wanted to see the rare and endangered Irwanda fresh water dolphins. We checked into a hotel right on the river with the most amazing view which just happened to be on the veranda right outside our room. We payed a little more than we wanted but was well worth it and we were only staying 2 nights. The next morning we headed off with our moto drivers and our new Oz pal Sam, and went the 10km ... read more

Nie wiem jakim cudem kierowca pokonywal kolejne kilometry dzungli (trudno tu mowic o drodze) i jakim cudem nasz ... read more

Day 121 We left Phnom Penh on the bus in the early morning and arrived at Kratie in the afternoon. We found a place to stay and then walked the short distance into the small town centre to explore. We wandered around the market and found a stall selling some interesting looking food that we fancied trying for tea. Our takeaway dinner tied up in several small plastic bags we went back to the hotel where we scabbed a bowl and spoon each and sat out on the hotel's large balcony overlooking the river to eat. As we ate and chatted to a couple of other travellers a storm built up overhead. There was no rain but we sat for ages mesmerised by the most spectacular lightning display we have ever seen. Huge forks of lightning ... read more

Sadly, due to unexpected illness, our time in Cambodia is running out so we are forced to change our plans. Initially we were headed north east to Ratanakiri Province, but as we are leaving in a couple of days, we settled with a trip to Kratie, six hours north of Phnom Pehn. The bus journey was an adventure in itself, stopping in places crowded with children and women trying to sell us goodies. Dom opted for some tasty-looking deep fried tarantulas and found them a little spicy - especially the abdomen! Bex, as you’ve probably gathered from previous blogs, dislikes spiders whether dead or alive! Upon arriving in Kratie, a little town forming around a central and very dirty market, we settled in at a hostal to make plans from there. We arranged a trip with ... read more

_______________________ E: Hi folks, Currently I am grounded (yes, I know... again) in Siem Reap, this time with a kinda naughty infection in my foot. But no worries, thanx to Chinese doctors and some antibiotics I am fine and just decided to chill out for a while and get over with this infection before I head on. OK... last time I was writing from Laos. The border crossing was a nice little adventure, but no drama. First with a canoe from Don Det to the mainland, then waiting until enough people are together for a minivan -i.e. 20 people in a 12 seater :-))) - then about a half hour drive, change into a Sawngthaew and another half hour on a dirt track, me holding on at the back. Then comes customs on the Laos ... read more
