Today is my best friend's wedding.... Craig Marsh and Amber Hanscomb are getting married in Victoria, BC. I was supposed to be Craig's best man. Today I really miss home, and wanted so badly to stand with Craig on this day most of all. I love you Craig and Amber, I am with you in spirit. Congratulations! I will see you in Colorado! I will call you during the reception to say hi and wish you well... For the rest of my buddies that are starting the Mega Bike Week 3.0, mountain-biking road-trip-extravaganza... have fun, drink a billion beers for me, ride hard, ride safe, and show those XC jackasses what biking is really all about. I love you all. Don ... read more

When I first arrived in to East Africa, I came jam-packed with a mental list of things I wanted to do. Tracking mountain gorillas was not on the list as it costs $300~$500 just for the permits into the national parks in Rwanda and Uganda, and that was a shocker coming fresh off the India trail where I was traveling at $10-15 a day. I justified my decision with the thought, how special could it be... with 97% DNA similarities and weighing 440 lbs, they're just bigger, hairier versions of us. The pains of shoestring backpacking! A day later after talking with other backpackers I met at the hostel in Nairobi, I concluded that HAD to go track the gorillas! I had to sacrifice going to the Serengeti for the wildebeest migration *sniffle sniffle* off my ... read more

Refugee camps that I’ve been to don’t look like your Sally Struthers’ camps from TV. I’ve never seen anyone starving and kids don’t sit in the dirt with flies all over their faces. They are dire places for obvious reasons - hot, dusty and above all, crowded. People arrive on foot from bordering war-torn countries and are provided with just enough to survive - food and water rations as well as basic health and school services. But these come at a price - refugees that seek the security of a camp are then not allowed to leave, unless it is to return to their home country, irregardless of dust storms, droughts, flash floods or disease outbreaks. They are not allowed to earn money or grow their own food, lest they make competition for the often ... read more

Just two weeks removed from my “last day” volunteering in Dar es Salaam and there’s so much to talk about! During this stretch I met up with Erica, a friend from the NOLS India trek (refer to “The Trek”) who joined me to visit the island of Zanzibar where we met up with two more friends - Carrie and Rob - who’ve recently finished graduate school at UW in Seattle. After a few days of relaxing beach time followed by cultural immersion in Stonetown, the four of us hopped on a plane to Kigoma for a visit to Gombe Stream National Park, the place made famous worldwide by Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee study (now in year 47). After a couple days of hiking, I tagged along with Jane as the unofficial photographer for her visits to ... read more

So, today is called Drop Off Day. Basically they drop off people in pairs in the middle of Kampala and we each have tasks. Mine was to find out about the different banks and find out where the best rates were. It is to make you realize that you can navigate the city and that it is not so big and unknown after all. And that is definetely true. The people here are so nice. And Kampala is not as big afterall. The worst part is thr traffic though because there are no lights, nothing, basically no rules of the road that I can tell. Yesterday, we learned a bit of L'Uganda which is the language that most people speak here. Hopefully that will help me get around a little bit easier. We ate at a ... read more

Cape Town - The Final Farewell Africa » South Africa » Cape Town By NJWSJune 15th 2007Neil Sargent Thursday 28th June - almost nine months to the day since I left home on my adventures and I’m packing up ready to return home. I’m struggling to put down in words what the past four months in Cape Town has meant to me. It’s been an incredible journey and one which I am truly grateful to have had. It hasn’t always been easy - life in Cape Town can be tough but at the same time it is a truly wonderful, magical place - for me, a genuine home away from home and for that I can’t thank my friends here enough. We’ve had some good times and we’ve had some bloody b... read more

So we're finally here in Arusha.... after two looooong eight-hour flights. It's been a real culture shock already, from the Detroit airport, to the Netherlands, to Kilimanjaro airport. Once you get to the airport here, you walk out of the plane and into the front of the airport, which was kind of different. Everyone greeted us very warmly... we didn't even have to wait through customs, they just took our passports and we got our luggage and then they put us and our luggage on a shuttle to take us from Kilimanjaro to Arusha. We got to the school and they fed us. The school here (TCDC) is really nice, we have a sort of dining hall with cute tables with tableclothes and a small bar room with a piano and a pool table! Hey folks This is going to be a very brief entry, as I want it to just be visual. I am just going to attach a whole bunch of pictures, in hopes of conveying a small part of the beauty of this county. I have resized all the photos to be smaller so that they upload more quickly, but if you would like a full sized (3 megapixel) copy of a picture, email me at baalwolf@gmail.com and tell me the photo title(s). Thank you all for your comments and messages. I have been informed that "Petite Chirurgie" means "small surgery", which the Anderson clinic does not do. Feel free to pass on the link to this blog to whomever you like, as the reason that I am writing it is to inform as many people as ... read more
