At some point between using the internet and catching the bus back to Saikeri our cell phone was stolen. We bought a new one and here is the number (011 from the states, 001 from Ireland and England) +254 725 070 477. Sorry about that if anyone was trying to call that other number. We knew that something would get stolen at some point and at least it was only our cell phone and not anything super important. I came into town today to update this and send out a few emails because there is a festival this weekend in Maasailand and we are both going to go to it... meaning that we won't make it into town. So, since the hospital is super slow on Wednesdays I came in to Nairobi to pick up some ... read more

Africa » Rwanda June 13th 2007

I have to admit that for a very long time I thought of Rwanda solely in terms of the genocide of 1994. I have read several books about it, including Shake Hand With The Devil by Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Romeo Dallaire, whom I had the chance to meet and talk with in January 2006, so I thought that I knew what Rwanda was about. I thought I knew what I was getting into when I flew here in April, though I knew that it wouldn't be as bad as it is described in Skake Hands, since it has been 13 years since the world watched in horror for three months while the genocide unfolded. I quickly discovered that I did not know anything about what Rwanda is like, and that the people here have a ... read more

Everyday, there is a struggle for food. It is the 'Starving Season' right now, and this is evident in the lack of food around the marketplace. We cook our own dinners and the standard meal, peas with onion soup; beans and bread; mac and cheese; we eat lunch with our family and it seems as though the meals will be rice with cabbage (Cheb), or mafe (a peanut buttery rice mixture, with occasional dried fish) we just planted our garden, and Si Allah Jabbi, we hope it grows. As for now we will just tough it out until the rains come. ... read more

Africa June 13th 2007

After many hours of travelling I have finally arrived in Kampala, Uganda. I met up with the rest of my group in London and we met our academic director here in Uganda. Today, we are just seeing different parts of the city and trying to orient ourselves. It is pretty rainy but warm here. It is very different and it is so interesting to see the difference and the way these people live. It really makes you evaulate exactly all of the things that we do have, which really might not be necessary. But, it also makes me wonder how some people are able to live. WE had a traditional Ugandan meal (ie. yams, goat stew, fish, chicken, etc). For those of you who I did not get to say goodbye to, I apologize. I messed ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Cheetah Park June 13th 2007

The cheetah park is basically an enclosure where some german family grows cheetahs.. it is pretty cool to see cheetahs walking freely in the owner's house like house cats.. you can go up to them and pat them and touch them.. sometimes.. they would come up to you to lick you.. maybe tasting to see if you need some more seasonings before you are worthy for them to bite into you.. the cheetahs at the home gets aggrevated at times.. and the owner had to calm them down before we can approach them again.. After that it's back to the campsite bar.. where you wait till evening time to go out on the truck to feed the cheeetahs in the 'sanctuary'... so until then, you have nothing to do, so you buy some beer from them.. ... read more

6/04-8/04 I spend three months in Romania with Raluca in the summer of 2004. I missed my connecting flight in Boston on my to Bucharest, so I had to spend the night there. Boston turned out to be much nicer than I thought. In fact, it was so nice that I took Raluca there for a trip after we got married. She loved it too. A year later (in 2006), we ended up moving to Boston and that's where I'm typing from now. All because of a missed flight! I was rerouted through Frankfurt and got to spend a few hours there while waiting for my Bucharest flight. We spent most ofthe summer in Iasi, but we got out of the city a few times. She met me at the airport in Bucharest and we went ... read more

Started the safari yesterday with an eventful morning - at the time we thought a suicide bomber had blown up part of Nairobi, so we had to get out of Nairobi pretty quickly! It turned out in the end to be a local gang member trying to kill police whose grenade went off in his pocket in a cafe by accident. Still pretty scary though! It was only a couple of streets away from my hotel (I didn't hear anything though). Travelled most of the day yesterday in the safari truck (an enormous yellow beast!) to get to a campsite close to the lake nakuru national park, with one short stop at nakuru town. The journey was really bumpy - much worse than a rough sea for about 2 hours, i thought the truck was actually ... read more

Entebbe airport at some ungodly hour and it's so good to see a friendly face to greet us! His name is Ivan, he works for Watoto (Swahili for 'child') and he is our driver for the week. We arrived at our friend Natalie Locke's place at about 5am during a blackout...ah Africa! Thankfully we got to sleep for a few hours before starting our day as we hadn't seen a bed for the last 2 nights (or a shower for that matter). Again, we are thanking God for the blessing of being in someone's home...local knowledge, laundry and cereal in the morning...so the best way to travel! We were so grateful to Nat for taking us in! When we finally surfaced we were picked up by the lovely Watoto staff and taken in search of ... read more

Determined to send home the extra baggage that we accumulated along the way, Gene and I determined once again to make a visit to the post office a must. We deduced from prior experiences with the postal services throughout Africa that boxes would not be readily available and decided to head straight to the main square to barter with the vendors for a used box. Our first attempt was a failed one, but I was able to pick up on the Arabic word for “box,” which would prove handy as we bartered with other souq owners for packing materials. After paying the equivalent of $0.50 USD for a beat-up and broken down box, Gene and I headed back over to the post office with the hope that they could provide newspaper or bubble wrap to secure ... read more
