Ah, we´ve survived a week in Morocco, which was a much harder than i had originally expected. Lisa and I began our trip in Marrakech on the 2nd, after flying in from Madrid. We planned a full week here due to our preconceived notion that it would be quite difficult to get to the desert for some camel riding. Turns out this was not the case....so here goes.... MARRAKECH First arriving in Marrakech was incredibly overwhelming, to say the least. We took a bus in from the airport and showed him where our hostel was. He dropped us off at the Djemma el Fna and told us to go left. Hilarious. The Djemma el Fna is Africa´s largest medina, or city square. It is filled with snake charmers, storytellers, boxing, people selling everything, etc. There ... read more

We are enjoying our time in Zanzibar. Life here is pole pole (slowly). We spent the first 3 days in Stone Town, a old Arabic/Indian influenced city on the shore. It's pretty cool, the roads are like little alleyways, people drive scooters because cars don't fit down half of the roads. We took a walking tour of Stone Town the first day and saw many interesting things: the fish market, the old slave trade chambers, churches, the old fort, the old sultan's palace, The place of Freddie Mercury's birth (from queen), and many old architectural buildings. We went out for dinner to a little restaurant where you sit on the floor. The next day we combined 2 tours - Spice Tour and Prison Island Tour. We headed out to the government owned spice farms to learn ... read more

ALLAH U AKBAR, ALLAH U AKBAR ASH-HADU AL-LA ILAHA ILL ALLAH - ASH-HADU AL-LA ILAHA ILL ALLAH ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASULULLAAH HAYYA LA-S-SALEAH - HAYYA LA-S-SALEAH HAYYA LA-L-FALEAH - HAYYA LA-L-FALEAH ALLAHU AKBAR, ALLAHU AKBAR LA ILAHA ILL ALLAH By the time the prayer caller reached the final verse, my eyes were open and my teeth were grit in contempt. I rolled over and tried to fall back asleep before the brief silence was shattered with a second verse after the caller sucked in an Olympic swimmer-sized lung full of air. When the third verse started at 5:05AM, I couldn’t help but laugh out of frustration, knowing that Gina was wide awake beside me. Having sworn she would sleep through the obnoxiously loud banter the previous night, I felt some gratification in knowing I wasn’t ... read more

Well I've been back in London for two months now and predictably its all been a bit of a blur - lots of nights out catching up with old friends I haven't seen in ages or new friends that I made along the way in Oz and NZ. And in between that I got a job and a found somewhere to live - yup, reality has hit with an almighty thump.. for now anyway ;0) A few peops have asked about my Africa photos so here's a couple of blogs about the last 6 weeks or so of my trip..... My decision to leave Oz was all a bit spur of the moment, helped by the fact that it was raining and cold in Sydney and to be honest I fancied a change. So I booked ... read more

Luxor. So I left off with yet another photo opp, with our beloved American icon, Ronnie McDonnie. He stands just opposite the Luxor temples. What better place to put a freaky fiber glass fast food clown statue. A little bit about Luxor. Its Hot, and when I say hot I mean HOT. I think its about 112 degrees right now. You walk the streets for a few minutes, ducking into whatever shade you can find. So I find myself standing outside of this McDonald's. I can feel the air conditioning, flowing out from the cracks in its spotless door. Before I can say super size me, I am standing at the register, soaking up the air-con. I really didn't want anything, and to be honest, don’t really remember making the decision to go inside, just remember ... read more

Sunday, June 10, Dahab is a city which grew up around the Red Sea dive site “The Blue Hole” It became famous and busy, frequented mostly by divers and backpackers, and was apparently a place where a cheap good time was available, along with cheap drugs as well. Last April a bomb went off in Dahab and tourism is way off, particularly from Americans, who are so noticeably absent that merchants frequently asked us why there were so few American tourists compared with previous years. I guess the predominant tourist these days is Russian or German. We haven’t seen a whole lot of other tourists, either. And there are 20 or so restaurants with cushioned seats right on the water ready to serve you fresh sea bass, calimari, snapper and shrimp at prices which will ... read more

I headed south to Agadir to check out the beach and the scene there. I also wanted to try a find a bookstore that the guidebook mentioned but that turned out to be a waste of time because if there ever was a bookstore there wasn't anymore. I stayed a day in Agadir and spent the night in a yellow 8 by 8 foot box but it did have a mini sink and a structurally questionable balcony so that more than made up for it. The next day I left Agadir and headed further south. I got a ... read more

History Lesson: This is what I have learned from Galib & through my own research on the internet. There is the SPLA & the SPLM. (Collectively known as the SPLA/M) SPLA: Sudanese People Liberation Army. Previously referred to as "Rebels" & sometimes still are, but now they are the "armed" section of the SPLM. SPLA formed as a result of lack of infrastructure and resources and they fought for the betterment of the Sudanese people living in the south. SPLM: Sudanese People Liberation Movement, grew from the SPLA and is now a legitimate political movement in opposition of the Government. Then there is the Sudanese Government. Agreement: A Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in Nairobi, Kenya on January 9, 2005, between the government of Sudan and the SPLM. What's going on: Power struggle between the ... read more
