Dear All Wow - as predicted, the Victoria Falls is just amazing, and just definitely the highlight of my trip so far - this is saying something since it's been such an awesome journey already. For once, coming to the end of my trip, I'm actually more excited to continue travelling than to go home - normally around this time I get a hankering for a hot bath and my own bed, but not this time - it's just a great trip! Before I continue with the praises of the Victoria Falls, I should really update on what I did since I last wrote, as the last few days have been pretty busy and I’ve lots of photos to upload even before arriving here. Last I wrote I’d just arrived in Bulawayo, after a very pleasant ... read more

We had to wait in a line that didn’t move for ages at the Zimbabwe immigration and eventually got out of there after an hour and a bit and paying $30 per person for the visa. We drove to Victoria Falls (that’s the name of the town next to the falls on the Zimbabwe side) and had lunch at our hotel, Adventure Lodge. The adventure team then showed us a video and explained all the activities that are possible, including white water rafting, bungi jumping, riding elephants and walking with lions. Unfortunately for us, all of these were prohibitively expensive. That afternoon Patrick drove us all to the Victoria falls park entrance and we all said goodbye as he had been told to drive the truck back to Swakopmund by Monday (it was Saturday) in ... read more

"Back Right, Forward Left, Duck, Duck" are the last words echoing through your mind as the raft flips sideways, catapulting you into the category five rapids below. You barely have time to see your life flash before your eyes as you are dragged under for a third time leaving you wondering which way is up! Holding your breath when the wind has been knocked out of you is difficult enough, but being thrown around in a washing machine is a scary experience, even for the most hardcore adrenaline junkie. On parting with $130USD, my friend Lee assured me it couldn't be as hardcore as the media portrays. Besides if it was so dangerous, they wouldn't let inexperienced rafters attempt such a dangerous river - right? With names of rapids like Stairway to Heaven, The Terminator, The ... read more

Greetings from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.. Following on from our last blog, we spent two days in Chobe national park, Botswana's premier park for elephants. They say there are 40 to 60 thousand, we certainly saw hundreds. Our visit to the park started with a long boat cruise on the Chobe river. This is a beautiful, very wide river and not too deep, great for hippos to walk about in, wallowing and snorting. We saw many – from grandads to little ones, though little hippos still come in the Large size. Also in the river were many elephants, bathing, drinking and, as far as we could tell, larking about, Like the hippos they ranged from huge, ancient bulls to little three week old little chaps. Oh, so sweet. Later, we loaded up a 4x4 to travel into ... read more

Victoria Falls were incredible - I kept trying to compare to Niagara and Iguasu but its hard to remember how I felt seeing those - and each is so different. I was in my own world to start with - just taking it all in. The magnitude of the falls was incredibly beautiful and unbelievable. I think the word that describes it best is magnificent. We took so many photos, there were rainbows and fall spray. At one point we got absolutely drenched standing on Danger Point in the spray right at the end of the Zimbabwe side of the falls. It was awesome to spend time with the family, Vix, Tori and Leo. In the late afternoon we went for a sunset (booze) cruise on the Zambezi. That was really awesome to be on the ... read more

Victoria Falls The Pot of Silver at the end of the Lunar Rainbow 21-12-2010 The next day, we took a taxi to the ‘Big Tree’, which is a bit far from the rainforest but which is worth a visit. I believe it is a baobab tree but I am not sure. Anyway, it is HUGE. The taxi dropped us at the entrance to the rainforest. We were fully equipped with umbrellas and raincoats and a camera and traversed the whole length of it from the Devil’s cataract to the ‘Danger Point’, opposite to the ‘Knife’s Edge’ on the Zambian side. Fortunately, the day was clear and the ‘spray’ from the falls was not too thick to obscure the views, and so we had wonderful rainbows (solar) over the majestic falls. There is a nice big statue ... read more

Victoria Falls Chasing the Lunar Rainbow 20-12-2010 We had planned to be at Victoria Falls on my birthday, which falls on the ‘Datta Jayanti’ day according to the Hindu calendar, i.e. the full moon day in late December. However, the more important reason was that there was a 50/50 chance of our being able to witness the ‘lunar rainbow’ at Victoria Falls, which is seen only on full moon nights. We decided to take the chance. Boy! Am I glad that we did take a chance and planned our trip accordingly! We actually did see the Lunar Rainbow and that beautiful sight made up for all the discomfort of walking 8 kms in a day in the Rainforest, 4 kms in the morning and 4 kms at night. There is no other way to see the ... read more

So, when I last left you I was headed towards Zimbabwe and the mighty Victoria Falls... Day 7 of our overland trip we woke up early and headed towards the border where both Mike and I got raped by the Zimbabwean government. Turns out their Military dictator doesn’t really like Canadians and we had to pay $75 for a single entry visa. (Please note the south Africans on our trip paid nothing, and the Germans paid $30). So, if we actually wanted to see Victoria Falls from the Zambia side (which I kind of wanted to do) we would have had to pay $50 to get into Zambia, and then pay $75 to get back to Zim to catch our flight out. With a welcome like I am sure you can imagine how excited I was ... read more

Shoestring Backpackers turned out to be the best place we could have chosen to stay. They had a closed in parking lot for the car with a guarded gate. As you walk in there is a bar and lots of sitting areas in an open courtyard with a pool(that we decided we would not be swimming in – the water was not exactly clear) Our room was just around the corner to the bar it was simple but clean. Two bunk beds in a plain small square room with a window. The bathrooms were a little more interesting and tattered looking but they served their purpose! We got back to shoestring and Alex decided to shower. Raymond and I plopped ourselves down at the bar and started our first of many drinks! The power was ... read more

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - 4 days Just one story from Lusaka before the events of Victoria Falls. Zambia has copper resource and earns foreign exchange from export so Lusaka (the capital) is very different from Nairobi or Dar es Salaam. Lusaka has malls with parking lots and concrete sidewalks and 4 lane divided roads with no pot holes. Boulevards lined with jacaranda trees, all in full bloom, covered with pale purple blooms. Outside Lusaka were large wheat and corn fields that must be managed by machine. There was even a John Deere dealer. Up to now, we have seen only human power cultivating the fields. What a contrast!  Now to Vic Falls, Zimbabwe. Lots to do: bungee jumping, zip wire, class 5 rafting, canoe the upper Zambezi along side the hippos - none of which we ... read more
