Our group decided that rather then go back on a short drive to Mama Rulas, we would get up at 4:00 and make the long haul to Victoria Falls by way of Lusaka in two days instead of three. It was brutal getting up so early and we had a very sleepy truck full on this long drive. After the 3-hour bone jarring, teeth rattling 'back massaging' ride back out to the highway, that is. We marvel that our truck is still in one piece. Good old Mercedes. Our driver Hungry Man does on the spot maintenance daily.  Once again, we chose to watch the passing scenery instead of sleep. More fascinating country sprinkled with little villages, scattered homes and a web of footpaths leading off into the countryside. We estimate that 99.9% of the population ... read more

Time to go home. Boo hoo Monday, August 30. Well, not quite time to go home. Ahren and I have booked a 14-minute helicopter ride for early morning. We’re both a little apprehensive as we arrive at the landing site. As the helicopter is pulled out of its hanger, the six passengers are weighed and arranged to distribute the weight. And somehow I end up riding in the copilot’s seat. Woopee. It isn’t scary at all. It’s more like a Disney ride. We zip to Victoria Falls and spend the next 10 minutes circling the falls and the river. It is spectacular. It ends way too soon. Exhilarating. I am flying the rest of the morning. Without a plane. What an incredible few days Since we arrived in Zim, Ahren and I have ridden an elephant, ... read more

Saturday (PM 31/7/2010) On arrival at the Zim side of Vic falls we sat down to a presentation of the optional activities available, but this time we wouldn’t be partaking. We had a quick lunch and went to watch the other’s bungee jump from the Vic Falls bridge. Feeling equally as nervous we were quickly signed up as photographers and camera men as our mates took a leap of faith on the bungee, gorge swing and flying fox. Duties all but done we hurried back to camp as we were swapping trucks and hence crews we had another predeparture meeting to attend at a difference camp site. We made it in time for the taxi to Tokkie Lodge for a quick briefing with our guide Jack and substantially smaller crew of just six… including us! Eva ... read more

One of the world's natural wondersSaturday, August 28. Just seeing the volumes of towering mist rising from a distance is exciting. But it doesn’t quite prepare me for the first glimpse of Victoria Falls. Stunning. The shear volume of water coursing over the rocks is staggering. And they go on and on and on so instead of one huge waterfall there are a series of hundreds of waterfalls. At one point there are waterfalls stretching as far as I can see in either direction. The falls are often lost in their own mist. White steam decorated with rainbows. To see the river below I have to walk out on rocks that are slippery when wet; they are always wet. It is an amazing experience. But we don’t spend nearly enough time here. Instead we drive out ... read more

by Kamini Crossing the border from Botswana to Zambia across the Zambezi River (the river forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia) was made much easier by a lovely Batswana lady named Ambrosia, whose friend gave us a free ride across the river. She also made sure we didn't get ripped off by the taxi drivers on the Zambian side. Ambrosia was on her way to Zambia to buy fruits and vegetables as they were surprisingly cheaper than in Botswana and worth the effort of crossing the border. We stayed at Jollyboys, a popular backpackers in the town of Livingstone and a very easy place to while away the hours: lots of cushions to lie on, swimming pool, bar which unfortunately : ) only sold wine by the bottle. However the first thing we had to ... read more

I was travelleing in Africa and went to the majestic Victoria Falls and this was an awesome experience. I could not get enough of seeing this majestic waterfall. This is awesome and still kept in its natural state. They have maintained this in its natural form and have kept over development in this natural wonder. The locals there on both the Zimbabwean and Zambia side were very friendly. I did a lot of activities like elephant back ride, sunset cruise, bungi jump and helicopter ride but the Jet Boat experience was my major highlight. This is awesome its an experience of a lifetime as you get close to the water fall in the boat you can actually touch the water going down the wonderful gorge. ... read more

Africa in comfortFriday, August 27. The two-hour flight from Joburg to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe (Zim) is uneventful. We load onto two large vans and head for Stanley and Livingstone Hotel which turns out to be a series of separate one-bedroom bungalows designed to look on the outside like native huts complete with thatched roofs. The place is meant to capture the opulence and comfort of the early English-based hotels. Rooms are furnished with antique furniture and fittings. Even the books on the desk and tables in the living room are old. Ahren and I are impressed. And delighted. We hear that this is a very fine, very expensive place. It is not normally on the tour and we don’t know why it’s on the tour now. Perhaps the economy led to rooms going empty so ... read more

Good bye truck. But hello again to Liz and Nik. I leave Livingstone to cross the border into Zimbabwe, where Liz and Nik from the truck are already staying. First we get our night train tickets for that night, then off to the Falls again. The Zimbabwe side is much more impressive, and being slightly further back means we can appreciate it better. Although at the far end of the walk there is no barrier at all!! Then onto the fanciest hotel for cocktails and afternoon tea! How classy, after 3 weeks camping!! The night train to Bulawayo is interesting... We have a sleeper carriage, first class, although the trains have been let go since the country was called Rhodesia. There is no electricity on the train, so we sit in the dark, wearing headtorches and ... read more

Hello Hello! It has been quite a while since I have last posted but the internet has been sparse and we only stop in major (or small to be honest) towns for like an hour a pop and then we have to buy all our snacks and such, check our emails, and if lucky reply to a few. Anyhow weve made it to Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE: My first humourous observation regards Zim currency. In the first half of the 2000s, Robert Mugabe, the last of Africa's “Big Men” said that he would not “be bound by traditional economic practices” and he proceeded to add an additional zero to the end of his currency about once a month for 5 years. The result was currency in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 billion zimbabwe dollars! A ... read more

Victoria Falls Victoria Falls are absolutely stunning. They are so huge with a massive volume of water cascading over such a long canyon edge. We hired full length raincoats, as recommended by some people we'd met at Popa Falls, and were very glad we did. We visited from the Zimbabwe side and you walk for around 1200m along the opposite side of the canyon with these amazing falls oppposite you. As the wind changes direction you're alternately soaked and then in sunshine. We were lucky as for the dry season there was a lot of water (so we were told). It was the vastness of the falls that was so stunning, 100m drop for over a kilometer, then round the corner into Zambia (that we didn't visit). Victoria Falls town is a very small place, completley ... read more
