There are a few things that you notice when you travel by yourself… First of all, you go to bed early because there is no one to entice you to stay up late, socialize with others and drink more in the bars than you really want to. Secondly, you find yourself having a conversation with no one. It has happened several times on this trip. I verbally tell myself what is on the agenda for the day… where I will go, what I will do, and how I will get there. When I catch myself, I immediately look around to see if anyone is looking at me crazily. Luckily, I seem to only do it when I am not near other people. Weird… I need to stop that. Also, you tend to sit back and take ... read more

I made it here and the place is gorgeous. I don’t want to say that getting here had its challenges, but there were a few things… I was up at 3AM to be ready for the taxi at 4AM. He arrived on time and whisked me to the airport in no time at all. I went through a series of 3 security checkpoints, which is a normal thing at the Dar airport. I don’t know why, but they do it that way. I got on the flight and immediately fell asleep, missing breakfast and three quarters of the flight to Johannesburg, South Africa. When I arrived, I had to make a mad dash though the airport to make my connecting flight. I had to go through another Customs area and then race to the gate. I ... read more

Der ruhige Strom ... read more

After two months we were back at the Victoria Falls but this time from Zimbabwe side and it has been same ‘wow’ experience once again. We understand why this is one of the top world’s wonders. It is really hard to compare Zambia and Zimbabwe falls since it is same amazing falls but you are getting unique view from both sides. Definitely you are getting a better view and understanding how big these falls are from Zimbabwe side but in Zambia side you can stand almost on the top of them and feel the powerful nature wonder. This time of year the falls were full of water and we couldn’t avoid getting absolutely soaked from head to top as it was splashing like from a big bucket. As well we couldn’t resist going back to the ... read more

today was the falls. first we did a guided tour of the Zambia side of the falls. wow, I thought the falls would be more like niagra falls in the USA, but then I knew from the flight they were not. the land on the other side of the falls is much closer. we had to wear ponchos for part of the time because of the mist. our lodge had cool ponchos, I pointed out to Shelly the lower class lodges. they had something more like a plastic bag. Yes, I have pictures. so then we knew we had to go to the Zimbabwe side. our guide took us to the border. $30 and we got our zimbabwe visa. the we walked the bridge and the long walk to that side of the falls. Another $30 ... read more

Actually, the title of this short post should be “The Smoke that Thunders”. The Thunder that Smokes was the situation with our digestive systems after 4 nights (and a total of 32 courses plus snacks) at the fantastic Dulini Lodge. The Smoke that Thunders, or Victoria Falls, as it was renamed by the explorer/missionary/anti-slavery campaigner/all-round do-gooder Dr Livingstone, is an amazing sight on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe. We spent two nights on the Zimbabwe side of the falls, and have been amazed equally by the stunning scenery of the Falls and the amateurish service at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge where we stayed. But the falls first. They are one of the seven natural wonders of the world, although I don’t know who made the list up since it doesn’t even include Bondi ... read more

Geo: -17.93, 25.84This morning we had breakfast at the backpackers and then got in the car. It was a short drive to the Victoria Falls National Park, where the famous Victoria Falls can be viewed. The entrance fee was quite steep – USD 40. I was excited to be here, as I have heard about these impressive falls. The falls have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. At their highest, the falls measure 108 metres in height and 1.7km wide. They are also known as 'The Smoke that Thunders', possibly due to the noise it makes. The falls were discovered by the Scottish explorer – David Livingstone in 1855. We walked through the rainforest and then had our first view of the falls. The other side of the falls is in Zambia. It was ... read more

Geo: -17.93, 25.84I was woken up early this morning as the others were watching an early game of rugby at the bar. It was the Rugby World Cup, Australia were playing against South Africa. I wasn't interested in watching it, but went along. This was my chance to wear my new rugby shirt that Paul brought for me- I don't think I will ever wear it again. In between watching the television and trying to act interested, I kept an eye out for animals approaching the waterhole. In the end Australia won the rugby world cup, I did enjoy rubbing it in Paul's face that they won. We had breakfast at the lodge and then packed up our tents. There was another long day of driving ahead of us today. We left at 9:30am in the ... read more

Hi and howzit (as they say in South Africa), We are back in Jo'burg now after a mind blowing experience in Zambia and Zimbabwe. I'll start with Zimbabwe - the first place from which we saw the falls... Victoria falls is more spectacular than we ever could have imagined from up above in the helicopter. The only word I can think of that even comes close to describing it is "majestic". There are so many things that contribute to it's splendor. First of all, they have left it completely natural - so there is absolutely no development around the falls. Zambia and Zimbabwe share the falls and have an agreement that no country can develop the area without consulting the other first. The result is that from both sides - it is truly a natural wonder. ... read more

M - And it only cost me US$3! ... but the chap in front of me on the bus was a Trillionaire! As you are probably aware Zimbabwe is a mess at the moment and has rampent inflation as one of many of its problems. As a result the locals sell large denomination notes for a few bucks. I managed to get my $50 billion note for US$3 but I never did find what my fellow tourist paid for his $10 Trillion note. I suspect it may have been a little more. We were actually a little surprised when our day trip to Victoria Falls ran via the road route from Botswana to the visit the falls on the Zimbabwe side. We thought we might have to take the ferry and visit from the Zambia side ... read more
