Sorry I've just made it to a place with decent internet and found that only part of my blog made it on so here's the full episode with a few pics :-) Well not much, Kath and I have been spending very lazy days by the pool peppered with short walks to the supermarket or other shops. In retrospect 10 days in Vic Falls was probably a few days too many but it’s also kind of nice to get a good feel for the place and chat with same locals etc. Whenever we leave the rest camp we end up with a couple of guys approaching us trying sell carvings or any one of the ridiculous Zim notes in the billions and trillions of dollars, most of these guys have chosen “English” names for themselves….among the ... read more

So what’s been happening over the last few days, I hear you ask?? Well not much, Kath and I have been spending very lazy days by the pool peppered with short walks to the supermarket or other shops. In retrospect 10 days in Vic Falls was probably a few days too many but it’s also kind of nice to get a good feel for the place and chat with same locals etc. Whenever we leave the rest camp we end up with a couple of guys approaching us trying sell carvings or any one of the ridiculous Zim notes in the billions and trillions of dollars, most of these guys have chosen “English” names for themselves….among the many that we’ve met there’s been Peter Pumpkin, Christopher Columbus, King George and Prince; all coming out with some ... read more

Hey everyone We're still in Victoria Falls.....not a bad place to be for an extended stay. After I wrote the last blog we spent a few hours down at the falls and were amazed at the water level as it was so much higher than last time we were here in September 2009. The spray from the falls was pretty intense and we got a bit wet. There aren't many people around at the moment so we were able to stroll around the grounds and enjoy the fantastic views and saw the odd babboon and a family of mongoose...very cute! That evening we wandered back to the Vic Falls Hotel for cocktails on the veranda sitting amongst the granduer of the hotel with the sound of the falls in the background. We had decided to treat ... read more

Hi Everyone Well we're back in Vic Falls and it's great to be back....nothing much has changed around here, still as laid back as ever :-) Although it hasn't exactly been a smooth run getting here........ I left Auckland on Saturday 17th early in the morning bound for Joburg via Melbourne.....I managed to make my tight transfer at Melbourne airport and met up with Kath my travel buddy. We had a hellish 15 hours flying time which dragged very slowly especially as there was a poor baby 2 rows in front who wailed the whole trip, the service was the worst I've ever had on V Australia and it was soooooo hot in the cabin. But anyhoo we made it to Joburg safe and sound, my bag on the other hand did not......I'm still waiting to ... read more

Well after a long and tiring flight we (Tracey and I ) have made it to Vic Falls - Zimbabwe. Kath battling a terrible cold and Tracey minus her backpack!...... So we arrived in J'burg and spent the night at a hostel close to the airport as our flight to Vic Falls the next day was mid morning. Unfortunately Tracey's backpack did not arrive in J'burg so we spent an hour or so with the lost baggage people filling out paperwork. Luckily for Tracey she was well prepared for it and packed extra clothes in her daypack. The next day we arrived at Vic Falls. We were expecting to be met by a driver to transfer us to our Vic Falls accommodation however no-one was there to meet us. After a phone call we managed to ... read more

First night on Larium was like being on the movie set of Nightmare on Elm Street. I just didn’t want to go to sleep and for good reason. A few weeks later I would have ants moving round my head when I slept, I would be jumping off cliffs. Suffering paranoia, touching lions and worst still not being able to get any money out from banks or ATM’s. Could Victoria Falls turn potential nightmares into reality? Victoria Falls is on the border with Zambia and Zimbabwe and is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. It is in a high-risk malaria area which could be fatal if the right mosquito gets you. To provide a better protection from this there are various types of pills. This time round I decided to trial the stronger ... read more

World cup of soccer has been a dream come true, a wonderful tournament put on by FIFA and the country of South Africa. I have enjoyed thoroughly the matches, the atmosphere and living with a very kind generous family in Pretoria during the tournament. Our first match was the USA vs England in the city of Rustenburg. What a game! A draw to the delight of many USA fans. The Vuvavella made famous here (loud horn used at matches) created an unforgettable atmosphere. Staying in a camp within a nature reserve was very nice. Had projector and nice television so I was able to watch every match. My cousin and I camped with Timmy D from Canada, and Redman from the UK who just completed volunteer work together in Madagascar. On the 5th night in Rustenburg ... read more

After not too flash a night, I woke up feeling not too bad, not great but much better. Thinking perhaps it may the anti-malaria medication having an anti effect on us, we are now considering abandoning them! Tim is on the better side as well, but still not so grand. He has confirmed absolutely, definately, without a doubt that bobbing about on the river in a canoe will not be in his plans today, but a good sleep will be! This morning I will be going canoeing down the Zambezi River. The original plan was to go White Water Rafting but this has been cancelled for maybe another month as the water level is still too high. Tim has thought it best to give it a miss and just have a rest up. But he came ... read more

BANK TO BANK, CROSSING FINGERS First thing, we head over to the bank to collect our money transfer. We go to the Chartered Bank. Everyone is really helpful. After 20 minutes it’s all done! Can’t believe after all the hassle to arrange it was this simple - happy days! Then we go next door to Barclay’s Bank and ask to speak with the Manager. We explain what happened yesterday, that we didn’t count each bundle of money, but neither did the teller. He asks the teller if he was $60 USD over yesterday and he says no. So unfortunately we don’t get the rest of our money, we doubted that we would, but there was still a small hopeful part of us that thought we may… But the manager has kept all the information of what ... read more

YOU ONLY LOOK FUNNY WHEN YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE This is something that it seems some people don’t think about, like being the only person in a tuxedo at the beach. The World Cup is only days away in South Africa and while people in the other countries are talking about it, they are nowhere near as pumped as they are in South Africa. So this morning at breakfast when 4 Aussies walk in to the dining room wearing Australian green and gold jackets, jumpers, scarves, beanies, yellow rimmed sunglasses and yellow spray painted hair they draw some attention. We hear the waiters talking near us in their own language. What we hear is blah, blah, blah, blah, Australians, blah, blah, blah, hahahaha, blah, blah. WHEN A SIMPLE PHONE CALL TO THE BANK BECOMES A ... read more
