Well we are at our last night in Zimbabwe before we head to Johannesburg and then off to Kenya on Monday where we will meet up with Anita and Ryan to start the overland part of our journey that's if Anita and Ryan haven't got lost in transit somewhere. The last four days have been very relaxing spending time in Victoria Falls kicking back and taking in the sights. On Thursday we had a very relaxing day wandering around the town and visiting various shops and markets. I finally struck it rich by purchasing a one trillion dollar note from a guy on the street. As you will be aware Zimbabwe has suffered over the last ten or so years with their economy finally completely collapsing a couple of years ago. Since then they have used ... read more

Because internet access is going to be a little difficult to obtain here in Africa, we will probably do a longer blog more infrequently than expected, so hopefully it won't be too boring. Read on if you dare! We arrived back into Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon from Kruger and hit the hay pretty soon thereafter as we had an early start the next day, meeting our friends Robert and Janine Donaldson for the day. For those of you reading this who don't know Robert and Janine, please bear with us for a moment as we get Sunday out of the way. We headed off to Janine's favorite coffee shop for an early morning cuppa (no surprises there!), then on to the Zulu-speaking church which they attend in the Katlehong township. Robert managed to find me a ... read more

We spent the second night of our journey at the Nata Lodge in central-eastern Botswana. Before we set out on our days drive to Victoria Falls, we got up early and went for a game drive out into the Nata Bird Sanctuary which is part of the Sua Pan. The Pan is a large topographical depression that fills up with water during the rainy season (winter). Like the Great Salt Lake in Utah, the water in the Pan is salty, but the Flamingos don't seem to mind it, they feed on a small brine shrimp that live in this water. As compared to other game drives we have done in Southern Africa, there was not much wildlife to be seen in the Pan. The beauty of this place is in the vastness of it all. About ... read more

Geo: -17.93, 25.84This morning we met at our car at 5:50am. I drove us to Victoria Falls. It was about a five minute drive. We were one of the first few cars there. There was a vendor hiring rain coats. Paul, Francois and I did not have one so we decided to hire them, as from a distance we could see a huge cloud of spray- without the rain coats we were going to get saturated. I was looking forward to see the falls again. Luckily I managed to get in on the South African entrance fee, which was still quite expensive at US $20. The falls were flowing hard due to the heavy rains in Angola. We quickly walked along the path and missed some of the view points because we wanted to see the ... read more

Geo: -17.93, 25.84We woke up at sunrise and packed up the tent. Then I went to the bar, I really wanted and needed a hot drink after the cold night, so I bought a cup of tea. I drank my tea and I watched the birds flutter around the waterhole. A little while later the guys joined me. I had a second cup of tea and we had some biscuits for breakfast. We left at about 7am. The drive to the Pandamatenga border was not long. I was hoping to see wildlife along the road, as we did last time we were here. I was on the lookout for the sign indicating that there are elephants on the road. We stopped at a sign and took some photos - now to see the real elephants on ... read more

After leaving Chobe National Park we headed to the Zimbabwe border. I paid $30 to get my Visa (first Visa in my passport). Poor Canadians had to pay $75/each. After the border we drove about 2 hours to Victoria Falls. Here we drove around, saw the entrance to Vic Falls, located the activity center, the market....everything within walking distance. When we arrived to the Rest Camp, a few of us decided to upgrade. The way that the upgrades were set up were a small building with two bedrooms (each with two beds), small dinning area, kitchen, bathroom with tub/shower. So there were four parties that wanted to upgrade...myself, Danny, Mike & Linda, Yvette & Daniel. So the two couples took one building...myself and Danny took the other one. Meaning I had a bedroom with two beds, ... read more

Geo: -17.93, 25.84Zimbabwe has a terrible reputation - infamous for being dangerous, for hyperinflation, for its corruption, and for its warlords, there is a definite ethical conundrum with visiting this country. From the steep $75 visa fee, to the $30 entrance fee to Victoria Falls, to the $4 beer at the park's cafe, even day trippers like us spend a significant amount of money here. Imagine how much one can spend while staying a week at one of the country's top-end game lodges, that easily run hundreds of dollars per night for a couple? Imagine how much of that actually makes it into the hands of the people, or at least, is put towards projects that benefit the people? Sadly, probably very little. For the most part, a trip here does support the corrupt regime, further ... read more

With our increased group we entered Zimbabwe; I was particularly excited to explore the country having heard so many things from Kate, a Zimbabwean who had been living in London for the past 9 years. She and her husband were moving back to Africa via a 4 week safari. We crossed the massive dam separating Malawi and Zimbabwe, which apparently was the biggest in the world. I had disbeliefs as I had seen much bigger. Unfortunately our guide was unable to expand on biggest, whether this meant height, capacity or length. These types of comments followed by a lack of credibility was a common occurrence in Africa, I was learning fast not to believe everything I heard (‘of course the water is safe to drink!’). The border crossing was painfully slow and the staff gave the ... read more

This past december I went on a road trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The Victoria Falls constitutes one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" -- the smoke that thunders and the Falls are remarkable. There is a magic about them manifested in the towering column of spray when the river is high, the thunder of the falling water, the terrifying abyss and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and deadly crocodiles lurk. The Victoria falls is 1 708 meters wide, making it the largest curtain of water in the world. It drops between 90m and 107m into the Zambezi Gorge and an average of 550,000 cubic metres of water plummet over the edge every minute. Remarkably preserved in its natural state, Victoria falls inspires visitors as much ... read more
