The 16 hour flight from NYC to Johannesburg was, surprisingly, not too bad. It went by rather quickly; there was a very decent selection of movies; and the wine was flowing. Fortunately the flight was not full so we had some space to spread out, stretch, and nap. After a quick layover in Joburg we were off to Victoria Falls. It was a small airport so the customs line was quick and painless. We received a Visa at customs in exchange for $30 USD. And we were on our way. We were met at the airport by a driver who would take us to our campsite. It was very humid out and quickly began to rain. Fortunately we were staying in a "chalet" that night and would move into our tent the following day. We had ... read more

Friday March 21 We arrived in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe around noon. Everyone in the group chose to upgrade their rooms for the next 2 nights. Well, I guess really we upgraded our tent. No where to go but UP I say!!! Anyway, Timon had called ahead and booked 2 bedroom cottages for all of us and of course Dick and Sue and Rene and I shared this quaint little cottage. It was so wonderful to a take our bags out of the overlander and reorganize them. While I booked an activity with a tour company, Rene found a bank and then scouted around for a place to eat lunch. He found the Shoestring Backpackers Hostel and after booking my "Walk with the Lions" we went for lunch. What a great hostel! Most everything outside except for ... read more

At last an easy travel day. From Kasane to the Zimbabwe border is nothing more than a 5 minute taxi which we shared with two girls from our hostel who were also heading to the Zimbabwe side of the falls. Once across the border, the few taxis there fought amongst themselves for our business and eventually they agreed whose customer we were, at which point we hopped into the car. Forty five minutes later we were in the town of Victoria Falls. The plan was to spend a few days on each side of the falls before catching a flight to from Livingstone, Zambia back to South Africa. After throwing down our packs, we set of an exploratory walk into the town center and the direction of the falls. Though only an hour from the Botswana ... read more

Went on an organised lion walk. This organised group has raised cubs and walked with them to get them used to humans. Then when they’re 2yrs old, they go into a fenced park where they are responsible for their own hunting in a semi-controlled environment. They form their own pride and their babies have no contact with humans at all. Once there are enough babies for a small pride, they are then all released back into the national parks. So, we were walking with two sisters who were 18mths old. The will shortly be moved to the semi-controlled park. One was over being with tourists so was a big grumpy pants, she growled a bit and then ran off on her own for a while but came back later. It was amazing to see how fast ... read more

Flew back to Zimbabwe to A’Zambezi Lodge where we were staying for 3 nights. The falls were amazing!! Not much water at the moment, but still enough to look spectacular. Can just imagine it in full flood. There is a section of ‘rainforest’ area where you are covered constantly in mist. I put my big camera away and used my waterproof one. I’m glad I did as later that day we met someone who used their good camera and it had then stopped working. Then had booked a helicopter flight over the falls. It was a 15min flight and it seemed like we were up there for ages. I was in the front and had a window at my feet and all in front of me. Stunning views!! That night we had a sunset cruise on ... read more

Having my alarm wake me at 05:30 is never something that makes a good start to the day, it got worse soon after as I had to climb over the fence of the hostel as they had locked the gates. It was just like prison break:-) Then I had an argument with the taxi driver when he dropped me off at the bus station as he didn’t have any change. At one point he even tried to include the 20 pula note that I had given him in the change, he obviously didn’t realise who he was dealing with. Instead of the 40 pula I ended up giving him 25 – just over £2.00 Then followed a 3 and a half hour bus journey to Nata, where I enjoyed a brunch of veggie soup and rice ... read more

The sound of raindrops on the thatched roof over my tent greeted me when I woke up this morning. It sounded like a "Country Rain", slowly but steadily, and I naturally hoped that he would stop before it was time the day of the Zimbabwe safari to begin. But in the meantime I enjoyed the sounds of the night, the Barn Owl was back on the hunt, the scops owls were heard their chirping calls and the bats chased back over my tent. Just before Andy's alarm clock rang, also Pauperize the first to speak out, her duet that you would not actually bring owls in touch if you did not know that it is Africa's smallest owls. When the first light was visible, and I heard them talking to each other and Andy Norman, it ... read more

And so the loop to Uganda brought us back around to Nairobi and found me with ox testicles in my mouth. I suppose I should clarify that sentence. The first 2 weeks(previous blog)delivered many highlights which involved animals, so it seemed only fitting that we should go to a restaurant and try to eat the vast majority of them. We visited Carnivores and paid the exuberant fee of $50 for an all you could eat meat buffet, although sadly those GreenPeace hippy types have ensured that a lot of the more interesting dishes can no longer be eaten. I'm all for saving the planet but I wanted to eat some zebra dammit, if only for payback at having to see 3trillion of them during the tour and the way they act like they have better eyelashes ... read more

Crossing the boarder from Zambia we entered Zimbabwe. It took quite some time to get over the boarder, as it was extremely busy. Being British I was informed I had to obtain a visa myself rather than with the rest of the group. I then had to pay $25 extra for my visa than everyone else because I had an English passport. I felt slightly discriminated against but I put it down to the political situations in the past. Apparently for someone from Zimbabwe to enter England it costs them $400 for a visa – so I cant really complain! That night we went for dinner at a place called Mama Africa with the rest of the group as a goodbye dinner. The food took a very long time to come but we were entertained with ... read more
