May 8th We all got up early because we wanted to make it to Dar at a decent time of day, and mostly to avoid traffic. The drive was great and the scenery again was tropical with lush green forests, interspersed with small villages and people going about their daily lives. With the windows down on the truck, and the breeze cooling us down, it is easy for the outside world to see us and many people wave. We wave back and smile, it’s hilarious when the little ones go berserk when a mzungu (Swahili for white person or foreigner) waves back! At one point we went down a very steep hill that is notorious for truck crashes, apparently many have very little or no brakes and they careen off the road frequently, at least once ... read more

... Men nu her i bagklogskabens lys, kunne man jo naesten vaere fristet til at sige, kan jeg godt se at denne tur i ... read more

Peponi So where was I? Tiwi beach... It's been a beachy few weeks... And a wet few weeks. After no rain at all for 3.5 months I certainly seem to have caught up with it and it looks like I'll be stuck firmly in the middle of it for some time. In fact I don't really mind all that much. So far the rain has been predictable - mostly late night/early morning - and even when it does come down during the day, despite the invariably ferocious deluge, the sun is usually out moments later, drying my clothes and re-baking the muddy earth roads. Tiwi itself was more or less dry the whole time we were there. It rained only the once overnight and then only a little and by the time the ceaseless ocean wind ... read more

For the past year, my friend Nora and I have been taking kickboxing lessons here in Dar. Our instructor comes to our campus and we have a one hour private lesson in our campus gymnasium, twice a week. Perhaps one of the coolest parts about this new boxing hobby, is that our instructor used to be the Junior East African Champion, and his brother- Japhet Kaseba- is the Champion! Talk about credentials for a trainer! So along with our lessons, our instructor- Jackson- also took us to some local boxing matches. We went to the quarterfinals and then to the championship matches. We were the only wazungu (foreigners) at the match, so we were awarded immediate VIP status and seating, and got to enjoy the matches from an excellent vantage point. It was a great way ... read more

I spent my last day in Tanzania volunteering and spending time with my new local friends. I taught both classes at the nursery school, the real youngsters (3-5) and the older class (5-7), and played outside. These kids are so smart for how young they are; it blew my mind. They can all say the ABCs and count really high. Their math skills impressed me the most as they could do both basic addition and subtraction by drawing balls and counting them. It was hard for me to teach them at times as I needed to translate things in Swahili, so they would understand what we were doing. I noticed that if I was teaching them something they would just repeat everything I was saying, but weren't really absorbing the information. For example, we would go ... read more

We finally arrive into Dar El Salaam on the east coast after the mother of all drives. Dar is a place of chaos and we spend a few hours sat around in congested traffic. A few of us throw some goodies out of the windows to soem of the kids - it's a great sight to see how happy some of them are from just some simple gifts. We camp next to the beach and arrive early enough to catch the last of the sunlight for a swim in the sea - it's towards the end of the hot season so the water is between 28 - 30 degrees celsius, much alike taking a bath!...it's not that often that you have to leave the sea to cool down! We unwind from a long day in the ... read more

Hello my dear followers jajaj if there are some?? jajaj Well, to be honest it has become a bit more difficult to keep the track with my journal jajaja diaries and daily rutines with personal thoughts have not been my strongest points. Anyhow, I am doing my best. So, until now, I have been working a lot a lot, and starting with my report jajajajaj once again I am getting the pain of project work ajjajaja, the weather keeps been nice HOT HOT, sometimes you can just stand the hit. I am getting a bit more used to the fact of being in Tanzania, when I am saying this is that is quiet difficult to realize in which place you are living in after a while. Everything is new, social codes, languages, streets, weather, traditions, everything ... read more

Tanzania has already been quite the experience. I arrived at dusk on Monday morning and as we drove to the Dar House for Volunteers of Art in Tanzania NGO, 30 km outside of the city center in Bahari beach, it was raining pretty hard. I soon learned it may be the start of rainy season, lasting 3 months...Ugh! (I don't mind the getting wet, it's the mud that'd be a hassle. But it's been sunny weather so far...knock on wood!) Well anyways, the first day I basically rested, unpacked, and met the few volunteers that were already here (I guess a whole lot had recently departed). The next few days were for orientations, meaning a city tour and a local walking tour. The city tour was very interesting as I was with one of the Tanzanian ... read more

JAJAJAJAJAJ This is unbelievable, I am in Africa and as of course the national TV is not quiet good, I find surprisingly that they are showing what in Latin America are called TELENOVELAS jajaj in English would be like Serie of love and so on. But this is the best, after all the years away from Colombia I find this Telenovelas quiet funny because they have such a funny English translation so over performed and here is the best the contents are exactly as I remembered back home, the RICH PEOPLE WHO TREATS BAD THE POOR GIRL, THE POOR GIRL WHO SUDDENLY BECOMES THE MILLIONAR, THE IMPOSSIBLE LOVE BETWEEN BROTHERS who didn´t know they were jajaja. But this is not it, I also found out that they are presenting INDIAN TELENOVELAS and they are exactly as ... read more

Jambo, Karibu, Asanté, Pola, Ugali This are the few, few words that I have gotten so far of Swahili jajaja. Well, this week have been quiet busy, first my work is really getting in me, so I am finding the real profesional in me, however, it is very challenging to coup with so many things at the same time, but, on the top of everything yessss I am not regretting a thing jajajaj. I am quiet surprise on the african way for taking things soo easy, that´s the way should, although, it can be a bit stressful when it comes about punctuality, definitly being delayed 5-6 hourse is quiet normal jajaja (and you cannot be mad about it) The weather has being faboulous, the food I must say, it taste a bit as my delicious colombian ... read more
