African Adventure Part I WEEK 1 Well what can I say about my first week in Tanzania, I guess not too much since I haven´t been able to see much, although I went to the beach in the south of Dar es Salaam which was very pretty until I got stick by a Jellyfish ahhhhhhh, It was scary but I survived even though today I can still see the marks in both arms and seems soo strange as if something has hit me with a tiny things. Well that was an adventure. Insects well I am trying my best to get use it except that I need to keep working on cockroaches, I really need to find a way where I can overcome this fear, which is quiet disturbing. Besides that the area where I live ... read more

Sir David Attenborough deserves some of the blame for the numbers of people who want to look at and photograph wild animals in the wild. And for the desire of most to get the quintessential photo of the lioness killing, the leopard stalking or the cheetah chasing down an antelope. There are rather a lot of people rolling through the parks and most of them seem to have large and very expensive looking camera equipment. We are well and truly on the tourist trail now. Trucks, planes and 4X4s cart mobs of us about all over Tanzania and they all seem to aim for the icons, the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. As I believe I have noted before, tourist do tend to get it right a lot of the time and if you wanted to see ... read more

I have just had craziest day of my entire life... Right now I'm sitting in a 5 star hotel in the presidential sweet that rents for 2500 USD a night in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania hundreds of miles from where I thought I would be 24 hours ago. HOW might you ask did I get HERE?? well... After leaving London I had to connect to the Nairobi flight in Zurich, Switzerland. We flew into Zurich just as the sun was rising over the most beautiful view of the Swiss Alps! Completely breath taking! I hustled to my second flight that was to Nairobi. Once on this plane I could already feel a different atmosphere. Everyone was talking to each other! I found this so strange because I've never even spoken to the person next to me!! ... read more

Only left it one month this time! And should be a reasonably short entry, just wanting to let you know I’m all alive and have not been thrown onto the streets of Dar... First things first - my mini-break with Emily. The first day of arrival I was just way too over excited and wanted everybody’s news. My hyper activeness was heightened by the fact that Emily made me a coffee and walnut cake and managed to get it through customs. I’ve never tasted anything so good - it felt very much like Christmas Day to me - that feeling where you know if you eat any more you are going to be sick but you just can’t seem to stop yourself. We devoured the whole cake (with a bit of outside help) by that ... read more

Najwazniejszy pierwszy wpis mam zamiar popelnic wlasnie teraz. Podobno od niego zalezy powodzenie calego przedsiewziecia, gdyz to on przyciaga czytelnikow. Mi natomiast zostaly dwa miesiace wedrowki dookola j. Wiktorii. Smutno troche i nie ma do kogo geby otworzyc, poza taksowkarzami, ktorym do znudzenia powtarzam, ze nie kazdy bialy musi jezdzic taryfa, a takze innymi ludzmi, ktorzy koniecznie chca mi sprzedac buty, okulary sloneczne, paski, ... read more

Hello there! I'm looking to relocate from Brussels to Dar es salaam in January 2010 - I'm looking to get a visa for a year, but am pretty open minded with no immediate mid to long-term plans, so coudl easily stay longer if I find myself loving it! I'd love to teach English in local schools and learn Swahili, alongside teaching drama/theatre in International schools (I assume that since I speak no Swahili as yet, this could only be done in International schools...?) However, I need advice! Where is good to live in Dar for a 23 yr old British/Finnish girl? Could anybody recommend a website with rooms to let? I welcome all general advice on moving to and livign in Dar! I also love surfing and take dance classes, so if anybody has anything to ... read more

Mambo marafiki wangu! (Some homework for you all…) Ok, so apologies again for taking so long to write this, I have no doubt whatsoever that my travel blog is the highlight of your days/weeks/months and therefore that I have failed you all with my lack of reporting, I am most sorry! So what’s been happening on this side of the ‘pond’? Let’s start with work! So strangely much of my time now seems to be filled teaching - not something I predicted I’d be doing at all but I’m actually really enjoying it! I’ve been doing sessions in 3 main secondary schools about various environmental/health issues such as Waste Management and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Trees and the Water Cycle, Conserving the Environment and Climate Change and Human Health. It’s very strange having to teach myself half ... read more

Hi everyone! I guess it’s been a while since I posted… I’ve been in the field the last several days where I got to chase a bunch of elephants (yay!), and also- just as fun, to take all my field assistants into the park, just as a thank you for all their hard work. These are the field assistants who collect data on elephant raids in the villages where they each live- one in particular is from a very remote village that is some distance from the park, but still gets elephant raids. Everyone was very happy for the chance to get to go into the park, but a couple of the guys just seemed down right inspired by it! The guy from the very remote village was so excited.. telling me that though he collects ... read more
