Mike laughed hard when the waitress said to me "you want diet coke?" his assumption because I am (his words) portly and her assumption because I had one by the pool Sunday .... Today at the office we prepped and planned for the weeks training and I videoed our trip in so that we can plan Driving hazard awareness training - unfortunately the video player isnt supported on my work laptop so I will add the video when I return! Not the best of days, my blackberry has been stolen and I made some mistakes on some letters (Kim has come to the rescue on my letters - my hero) I bashed out my frustration in the gym and went for a run on the green and was reminded of my "portliness" with an offer of ... read more

" I am afraid we are oversold, you will have to be upgraded" such hardship especially (i want to point this out) as I give up my weekends without complaint to fly for the company I work for, this was a treat. OK it was only to World traveller plus but for me with short legs who cant touch the floor in economy that was marvellous as World traveller plus has foot rests - bliss. I sat next to a gent who was part of the British Heart Foundation Bike Challenge and has spent months painstakingly fundraising and practicing for his 300 mile bike ride across Tanzania - good luck to him - I cant see me doing that on Brad Pitt the Brompton! Three whole hours we were stranded for at heathrow, the plane was ... read more

Day 45 - Today we went to some waterfalls in Marangu with a man called Jaffary. We took a dalla dalla that took us about 1 hour (that was fun) and as soon as we got off we were introduced to his friend, David. So Jaffary and David took us on a wall up the foothills of Kilimanjaro. We finally got to the waterfalls and spent some time there (Jennie took an unexpected dip which wasn't funny... not at all...) and we finally walked back to the town of Marangu, had lunch and a drink. Once we had finished, Jaffary went to the toilets when David said he had to be off, and for us to pay him his half so we did (it was only £2 each) but when Jaffary came back and asked where ... read more

Oh East Africa! What did I do without you and Swahili culture all of these years? Today I felt like a local rather than a mzungu on the peninsula. I had chips mayai for lunch (French fries fried with eggs into a pancake sort of thing) and spent all day at our survey contractor’s office (run exclusively by locals) to supervise a training (in Kiswahili). I spent most of the evening hanging out with a friend in his video shop in a locals’ neighborhood called Sinza, drinking coke and talking about the differences (and similarities) between Americans and Tanzanians. “Tanzanians want da cash money!” he kept telling me, including Tanzanian women, whom he claimed will tell you that you have a nice face to get with you, but once you are “broken” (broke), she will up ... read more

After five fantastic days on Zanzibar, I found myself back in Dar es Salaam, just a champions league final, and a 10 hour bus away from Mozambique. But as we all know, United lost, and there things went downhill. A case of Africa kicking me when I was down, and a nadir of the trip so far. After two many beers watching the football, and not enough sleep I found my way to the bus station (although I'm still not sure how) and, possibly still feeling the Tuskers from the night before, decided the bus with the giant roaring, leaping, tiger - the Buti Express - would be the bets option to get me to Mtwara on Tanzania's south-eastern coast. After arguing over the coast (and unlike United, winning), I found my seat and settled in ... read more

I feel like I’m living in a different life over here. I email and chat with the in-country staff here on a daily basis when in Baltimore, but when I’m here I’m so busy battling heat and mosquitoes; keeping a supply of clean water and edible food; and dealing with cultural differences and language barriers that I often forget that I have things like bills to pay and other emails to respond to and a life continuing along at home. And with Skype connections being so bad lately, even keeping in close contact with Ken has been a challenge. I was talking to an expat colleague who, after living in East Africa for 3 years, still feels like she’s in la-la land. I’m not sure what all of that means, but there it is. I am ... read more

It’s hot as hell in Dar, and I’ve been taking more showers than I can count. Yesterday I walked back from the local craft market and my shirt was completely soaked through with sweat. I finally broke down and hopped in a Bajaji, driven by a skinny guy wearing a Michael Jackson t-shirt. And when the electricity goes out, it’s especially lovely because so does the air conditioning in my room. I ordered a BLT for lunch today, which is basically toasted fat on bread, but there is a breeze going and I am listening to roosters, birds, and insects chirping. No wonder there’s “no hurry in Africa,” it’s too damn hot to move sometimes! Last Sunday I enjoyed my last day in Mwanza (which was much cooler) hanging out at the pool at my hotel ... read more

Tanzania may enjoy peace throughout its communities and society in general, but within intimate partner relations, violence is abundant. Having researched and analyzed policies and programs on violence against women in this country for the past several years, I am well aware that prevalence of physical and sexual violence that women experience at the hands of their partner is quite high, at around 40 percent. But witnessing these acts of violence--as I did the other night--is quite another thing. I was out having dinner with new Tanzanian female friends in a nice neighborhood of Dar, enjoying the discussion. They were telling me that young women these days exchange sex for gifts or money so that they can buy fancy phones, clothes and cars--a phenomenon called transational sex in the HIV field--thus, driving the HIV epidemic. Still, ... read more

We disembarked the ferry at 7ish and Don and I began our day of missioning without a plan. We started off by trying to find the Karikoo market and spent hours wandering up and down random roads. We were in no rush and I love walking through the streets just watching and being around people. The Karikoo market wasn't quite what we were looking for, so we headed for another place that supposedly had touristy things to buy. Wasn't quite what we were looking for so we headed onto the local ferry with thousands of people who do the 5 min ferry ride (Tsh100) across the entrance to the Dar bay. This ferry just goes back and forth all day long. We met a young girl Sabina (24) and her friends mom Monika (60) and got ... read more

Finally arrived at Dar Today started out like any other day except Suitbert was up in time for breakfast - maybe that is what upset the ying yang of the day hmmmmm. We went to the Mwanza office and discussed the Fire Escape and alarm needs and we went off for our 2pm flight, when we arrived at the airport we discovered there was no 2pm flight but that we should have gone at 12.40, we were put on the 5pm. we kept ourselves busy watching others getting their flights and having drinks then Mike realised he had lost his best glasses, After almost 2 hours of looking for them phoning people and ripping bags apart I almost begged the gods for something else to go wrong before we got on the plane so that our ... read more
