I spent my last day in Tanzania volunteering and spending time with my new local friends. I taught both classes at the nursery school, the real youngsters (3-5) and the older class (5-7), and played outside. These kids are so smart for how young they are; it blew my mind. They can all say the ABCs and count really high. Their math skills impressed me the most as they could do both basic addition and subtraction by drawing balls and counting them. It was hard for me to teach them at times as I needed to translate things in Swahili, so they would understand what we were doing. I noticed that if I was teaching them something they would just repeat everything I was saying, but weren't really absorbing the information. For example, we would go ... read more

After another day or so of volunteering I hit the road again and headed up North to Moshi. I took an 8+ hour bus ride that was actually quite an interesting ride. It is unsafe to travel at night (narrow two-lane roads, lots of passing), so you have to go during the day, which means it is HOT. And lets just say they stop once for everyone to go to the bathroom on the side of the road, meaning no toilets. Yes, I chose to hold it. They do stop at a highway restaurant for 15 minutes. I survived the ride and was so happy to arrive in Moshi. I got to the NGO volunteer house and everyone was so welcoming, the staff and other volunteers. I actually went with some of the volunteers to their ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar » Zanzibar City March 24th 2010

Sorry it's been sooo long! The last two weeks of my trip flew by as I did and saw so much. This entry is on my trip to Zanzibar and then I will follow-up with my trip to Northern Tanzania and my Safari adventure. I am probably going to write one more as a reflection because I am actually already home safe, but didn't want to leave you all hanging. So Zanzibar... After a few more days of volunteering, teaching english at the nursery school and playing soccer at orphanage, I was literally melting away at Bahari Beach (where I am). I can't even describe to you how hot it is here; you are literally always wet and sticky with sweat (it's great for my skin). As the weekend approached I planned to journey over to ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » East » Dar es Salaam March 6th 2010

Tanzania has already been quite the experience. I arrived at dusk on Monday morning and as we drove to the Dar House for Volunteers of Art in Tanzania NGO, 30 km outside of the city center in Bahari beach, it was raining pretty hard. I soon learned it may be the start of rainy season, lasting 3 months...Ugh! (I don't mind the getting wet, it's the mud that'd be a hassle. But it's been sunny weather so far...knock on wood!) Well anyways, the first day I basically rested, unpacked, and met the few volunteers that were already here (I guess a whole lot had recently departed). The next few days were for orientations, meaning a city tour and a local walking tour. The city tour was very interesting as I was with one of the Tanzanian ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo March 3rd 2010

So this was truly an adventure of a lifetime and tested me in every way. I know I am very independent but I have to say this put me on an extreme level. I must admit leaving Roma I was scared-shit-less (excuse my french). At times my hearts was pounding and I kept thinking what am I doing? But I knew there was no turning back now. I held my head high and did as my momma always taught me; walked like a man. I had arranged for a tour in Cairo and they were to pick me up at the airport, but of course I had horrible thoughts going through my head, like what if it was a scam and no one is here to meet me, what will I do? I had ideas for ... read more

Dear Roma, oh how I missed you. I should of known Alitalia Airlines would be in no hurry to get me to you. But I didn't expect them to drop me off in one terminal and my bag at another...GRRR! After catching the train to Termini and the subway to Battistini I finally was able to met up with my friend Giulia (a friend I made when leaving in Roma last year). I was so happy to see her! We quickly hurried to her work at a theater that was showing Momix: Bothanica which is a modern ballet with the theme of botanical gardens choreographed by an American. It was absolutely breathtaking! I felt so fortunate that I was able to go see this performance with her while she ushered people to their seats. Later that ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Richmond February 25th 2010

The UK has been just brilliant. I think the best way to describe England would be to say it is "same, same, but different" to America. London, which is where I spent a majority of my time, reminds me of New York and Hollywood, while still holding that old European feel. It may of felt like N.Y. and L.A. because I was there during the BAFTA awards (like the Oscars) and London Fashion Week. However, it also reminded me of Seattle a bit because of the gloomy, wet weather. I was so fortunate to have my dear friend Wendy to stay with in Richmond (a cute town just outside of the city) and to show me around the bustling city. As Wendy would say I got the "whistle-blown tour" of London. But we did manage to ... read more

North America » United States » California » San Francisco February 15th 2010

I packed up my bags late last night after a lively Valentine's night at Wolfdale's. As I packed I kept thinking; I can't believe I am actually doing this! I am crazy!!! What am I doing? It's already time to go!?! Ok wait, maybe I should back track for a minute for those of you who have no idea what I talking about. About 3 weeks ago I seriously started considering this adventure that I've always dreamt of; going to volunteer in Tanzania, Africa. I know a few people who have gone there to volunteer and had life changing, amazing experiences (they either stayed longer than expected or went back within a year). I looked into it to see if it was even possible with only a few weeks notice, and with only 2 weeks till ... read more
