In the middle of the week I went to the crèche where I have been volunteering. Holland and I found out that the day before there had only been two people working there. This means that with 75 children, there were only two people to watch them, cook their food, change diapers, and feed them. As I have said before; if anything, I can be another helping hand. I had been having one of my best days yet. When feeding the babies I hadn’t gotten any mush on them or myself. But when I got to the about the fifth child I was in for a surprise. Just as I had put in a mouthful, the little guy decided to sneeze and from head-to-toe I was covered in splatter. I am not complaining because at least ... read more

Adventure is definetely what I have had in the past few days. On Tuesday, I found out that my teacher was sick. Wow- what a day it was. At first the vice principal came in and helped start the class period. Then he left it to me. He left them with a paragraph to copy and label parts of speech. I had to correct his English...interesting. The children don't seem to know the difference between a noun and a verb. If I ask them what a noun is, they are able to tell me perfectly, but when I point to a word and ask what part of speech it is, they haven't a clue. It was a little frustrating. Then I helped them with some Math homework. They seemed to be getting it, but it is ... read more

Happy 4th of July! We woke this morning to the most beautiful sunrise over the bay. Gail joined us for a scrumtious "full" breakfast (juice, fruit salad, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, mushrooms, toast and tea) on the terrace outside our rooms. We watched constantly for whale spouts or tails, but saw none. Oh, well. After cleaning up, we said goodbye, and headed off to find a computer place that could convert my Microsoft 2007 files (which no-one can open) to an older version. "Dot Com" was recommended to us, but we had other things to do first! We went for a brisk walk along the Point, climbed up to a very old cave of the Khoisan people, saw a TON of dassies (herd?, flock? cliff-face??) and splashed about in some more tidal pools. These were even ... read more

Knysna We had made our way through this town of holidaymakers, industry, new subdivisions, and luxury estates, sea- and lake-view estates, multimillion-dollar waterfront apartments, huge mansions side by side, crammed in for a piece of the view of the sea and mountains. I couldn’t breathe. We were headed for the indigenous forest with a longing to walk and be nourished by nature. To be in the calm and peace. We turned up toward the mountain, at once noticing the absence of signs and fences. No barbed wire o high gates with cameras and imposing entranceways. None of that, but instead, wooden and tin shacks leaning at impossible angles, patched together with varying bits of wood, sticks, and an occasional old door or salvaged window. Pigs and cows grazing amongst the children, playing and laughing, and ... read more

Well hello there folks! Lets recap..when we wrote last, we were looking forwards to our weekend away with Lara (roomie) Kat (i-2-i guru), Mat (i-2-i Oz big Boss) and Erica (Queen Chauffeur!), and also planning our evening out with Lisa and Cliff (Help 2 Read peeps!). Dinner was a great sucess, Lara joined us which was great and the company was very easy going. We went to the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay. The food, as always, was fantastic and in the interlude between dinner and mains, we were treated to a display of insanity like never before witnessed! (And it wasn't by either of us!!!) The waves were enormous...crashing over the top of the wave barrier, and earlier that afternoon the alarm had been raised as someone had spotted a 4metre long great white ... read more

As you have probably gathered I am making my way up the coast from Cape Town. After three days there the plan has been to pretty much hop from one town to the next on the major bus lines here, which are fantastic. They have a super efficient baggage system, so I can feel totally comfortable putting my two huge backpacks in the luggage trailer. (They give you tickets for each bag, and unlike at most airports they actually check them before giving them back to you!) The buses are very comfortable, air-conditioned, and they even have an attendant who comes around serving coffee and tea! On Saturday morning I caught the Intercape bus to Mossel Bay. I slept most of the way, though I couldn’t help but get caught up in that awful Devil ... read more

I’m sorry I haven’t been very dilligent about updating my blog. My computer broke and so I have to go to the lab to use theirs and it is a little more difficult to make the time when I have to ride to use the computer. The last few weeks have been such an adventure! I finshed my first term (quarter) in South Africa although only one of my courses ended. Between terms there is a fall (spring) break as well as Easter. I spent my 10 days on holiday and it was excellent! The first half of the trip was spent on the Garden Route, which is a very famous tourist route througout the souther/easter coast of South Africa. It was beautiful and tons of fun! We had many adventures. I guess the best ... read more

Following on from our last update. Our last game drive was probably the best one as we saw a cheetah with her two cubs. The mother cheetah gave chase to a kudu who escaped. During the chase a troop of monkeys scattered into the path of the cubs who gave chase and then where chased by the monkeys! Started Garden route at Plettenburgh Bay through to Hermanus which was very scenic with mountains, gorges and coastal views. Stayed in various guest houses which we were able to pick and choose as its late in the season. Temperature in early mid-70's and mostly dry but quite a wind blowing in from the coast. Went to Addo elephant park and didn't see ONE elephant, apparently there is over 400!!! Tomorrow off to do Great White Shark cage ... read more

We officially start our trip from Cape Town to Mossel Bay. I ended up starting late and Dave (the mechanic) graciously stays behind so we can ride together. We catch up with the group (Peter, Bob, Bon Bon, Otto, Patrick & Phebe and Bruno & Kris.) on the way out to Hawston. We eventually catch up to John V. making our way to Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost point - prompting the comment from John “Geez, your friends ride fast!” I get separated from the group during a gas stop and end up visiting the cape and lunching of my own. Fortunately I catch up with the group for the ride into Mossel Bay People are very friendly here. You can stop and ask for directions and they’re often are curious about our trip. ... read more
