We have spent the last few days exploring the extremes edges of Southern Africa: the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and Cape Agulhara which is the southern most part of Africa. We travelled to the last one in our own hired car and so when a tortoise wandered across the road in fron to f us, we could get out and photograph him ... I didn't expect that, but later found that there are lots of road signs to warn the drivers! The Cape was a wonderful experience, we sat there and tried to make a list of all the famous sailors who had sailed past and lived, then of course there are the many who have lost their lives in ship wrecks. We ate a picnic lunch and raised a glass to them, shouted ... read more

James took only a small while to find his feet in Kayamandi and got stuck in with everything, feeding the lil ones, playing, letting them climb all over him so his sunburn was in agony, I heard him mutter 'mmm...double exit' as one of the lil ones brought up his food both out of his mouth and nose and he had to clean him up! Made his debut on the mini-bus taxis...for someone that avoids busses in England and finds them a struggle it was amusing for me and the ladies at the back of the bus to watch. He got abuse for opening the window, always seemed to sit in the wrong seat and had to get up to let people out at every stop, he looked shattered by the end of it. All been ... read more

My spring break started off with a little pre-gaming at the ole' flat on Friday night. Nothing brings people together like some home-baked chocolate chip cookies and spiked milk. The climax of the evening was when a few of us girls were working on Liz’s new dreadlocks while she strummed an auxiliary tune to a heated discussion on gay rights. I know you probably won’t believe me when I say that I didn’t get involved, but honestly, I was too entertained a sideline spectator. The real flares were between my roommate from Maryland, Mbali, a Xhosa gal from here in South Africa, a chill guy from Lesotho, and a Zimbabwean who loves Mogabi because “He’s a pimp.” Talk about conflicting worldviews. I did my part to keep the spirit up, declaring how proud I was to ... read more

Well I may as well tell you about the next leg of the trip before I forget it all! So Sarah left me and I caught the Baz bus to a place called Outdsthoorn. Wasn't sure where to go so took a pop at Oudtshoorn whcih sounded pretty interseting - but turned out to be quite dull! Got on the bus and was begining to wonder what on earth I'm doing traevlling on my own when I started chatting to the girl next to me. She turned out to be areally cool girl called Helen from Germany and we hit it off straight away, so have ended up traevvling together ever since. We went together up to place called Knysna, up the coast a bit. there we met another girl called Aly, from scotland, who is ... read more

We thought we'd do something different with this blog, by letting the pictures tell the story of our 1500km journey from Cape Town to Dundee. There is also a little video attached to this blog, this is still a beta function, so apologies if it doesn't work. We'd suggest looking at all the photos before viewing the video. In the interests of helping out anyone who liked the look of the places we visited, we have added the following links. Khoi Village Safari Ostrich Farm Cango Caves Cango Wildlife Ranch Teniqua Treetops Monkeyland Birds of Eden And so endeth our time on the continent... read more

Monday we travelled from Swellendam to Knysna on the Garden Route and Route 62 (the longest wine route in South Africa) which has many wineries and wine cellars along the roadside with wine tasting and buying opportunites. The route was quite scenic through the Karoo countryside and the mountains (which reminded us of B.C.). We passed through Oudsthoorn which is the ostrich capital of the world and we saw hundreds of ostriches on farms along the highway. Before we reached N2 (part of the Garden Route) we drove through a pass where we literally drove through the clouds. The visibility was extremely poor and we could not see more than 10-15 meteres ahead of us. Between George and Wilderness, part of the N2 was closed due to major floods last week causing road damage as a ... read more

We left the grey skies of Cape St Francis behind and headed for our favourite spot along the Garden Route, Knysna, via a breakfast stop in Plettenberg Bay. We managed to find ourselves a little self-catering cottage and decided to base ourselves there for 3 days. We spent the day at the Waterfront and wandering around the town before treating ourselves to a meal at a restaurant called Zest in the evening. Our next day trip was to Nature’s Valley to enjoy a walk on the beach. It is a really beautiful area. We went to Birds of Eden, just outside Plettenberg Bay which is like an Eden Project for birds, a huge outside aviary with 170+ species of birds. We spent another day in Knysna hoping to make the most of the brighter weather and ... read more

Next stop from Hermanus is Mossel Bay. MB is quite a bland little fishing village with a European feel to it, but it is still nice to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city. We are starting to settle into our travelling routine of eating, walking, lunching, exploring, relaxing, eating, drinking and sleeping. Here we did 6 or 7 km of a 13 km cliff walk where we saw lots of native flowers and colourful birds plus a pod of dolphins frollicking just behind the breakers. We managed to get ourselves locked in a typical Saffa high fence, security estate when we tried to navigate our way back and just as I was about to jump the fence, someone came along to let us out. Skinny Mini Henderson didnt have to climb the ... read more
