As you might have guessed, we were on our way back to Luxor, again by convoy, but this time with one major difference. This time we were staying for the next 2 nights at 5 star accomodation. This overlanding stuff is hard work! So basically, we dumped our stuff in the pool and all went and sat by the pool, swum and relaxed while watching an amazing sunset over the Nile. About half the group had to be up very early the next day for Hot Air Ballooning so we all pretty much had a quiet night. I gave this one a miss as i'll look at doing it when the option comes up again in Cappadocia in Turkey. The next day after my comparative sleep-in and buffet breakfast, we cruised out to the Valley ... read more

woke up early in the morning to catch the 8am train to High Dam station to catch the ferry to Wadi Halfa.. pretty nice walk to the train station in the morning hours.. no tourists.. no touts.. just people going about their daily morning business.. nice.. bought some water. .bought smoe fruits and bread.. and headed to the station.. The train ride to High Dam station costs 1LE.. buy your tickets on the train itself.. the train wasn't too late.. supposed to arrive at 8.. arrived 820am.. so it's good.. riding with the locals is fun.. and it's really nice to see that people really fight to give up their seats for ladies and elderlies.. cool.. they announce train arrivals over the PA system.. in Arabic of cos.. so make sure you find a 'friend' ... read more

Last night in Egypt.. so what are my feelings about this country? Firstly, overwhelming history and culture.. the ruins are already so impressive.. just imagine Egypt in its hay days.. but that's the past.. what about the future? Will Egypt continue to grow into a strong nation as it was before during the pharaonic age? Suez canal.. tourism resources... hope good things come out of these.. and get distributed to the people... it's really tough to trade with arabic people.. they're shrewd... they're aggressive.. they always want to get more out of you... dealing with them involves a lot of negotiation.. can get quite tiring.. i hope sudan and ethiopia will be more straight forward.. The number of people asking for baksheesh.. it's really very sad to see this.. from little kids.. to temple guardsmen.. to ... read more

Arrived in Aswan this morning.. I am taking the same train that i took overnight from Cairo - Luxor.. now i'm taking the next leg.. Train is supposed to leave at 7am, but arrived only at 830am.. well, not too bad already i guess... when i took the train to Luxor, it arrived only at 10am.. hah.. 2nd class train ticket from Luxor to Aswan cost 16LE for students.. and about double that for adults.. it takes 3 hrs (by right).. and it took 3.5hrs to do that this morning.. Arrived in Aswan about 12 noon.. Checked out the Nubian Oasis Hotel, not too bad.. but not much amenities around.. managed to get the price down to 15LE/night.. but decided to try out the Hathor Hotel that german guy recommended.. walked pretty far.. finally arrived.. ... read more

This time it's the difference between the world of backpackers' hostels and the world of the luxury hotel, where your room is cleaned three times a day, fresh sheets are put onto your bed daily and clean towels are offered about three times a day: the cruising classes must be a mucky lot. It transpired that our sleeper train left from Giza not Cairo itself, which meant another hair-raising taxi trip. After being security searched, we hung around on the platform waiting for sleeper train number 82, which duly arrived. It consisted entirely of sleeper cars and was British Rail style circa 1965 - a little compartment for the two of us, with a wash basin and two bunks. Dinner was awful - come back British Rail, all is forgiven. As it was after nightfall when ... read more

G'day guys, Have been here for 6 brillient days now and what an amazing time it has been!! I'll start with our first day when we went and saw the famous Pyramids and Sphinx and what a sight it is when half way through Cairo you see the peaks of the Pyramids sticking above the city. It was quite surprising to see how close they are to the city actually just on the boundry. There are three main and several small ones at the base of each for there respective wife, parents and children. We were able to go into the second one but would have liked to go into the great Pyramid but only the first 300 people get to go in so need to get there early. The one we went into was is ... read more

To start with the angels...About 2 hous ago I got robbed, that means I could not find my wallet anywhere when having a tea....OEPS...old trauma's came alive (I was robbed before)...but I just stayed relatively calm and said to myself ' It will be allright Jon' . I went to the police station and there was my wallet (with everything in it), I just couldn't believe my eyes and hugged the police officer who was very embarassed about this...haha..anyway, the sory is a bit misty but some guy found my wallet on the street and brought it to the police...I remember being hassled by a guy but that's it...it is not important. Off course I rewarded this guy with generousity and he and I had a nice cup of tea..see the picture. So, off course from ... read more

I am going to make a lot of people back home jeaulous when I say that I have walked in sunshine in short trousers, after the freshness of Cairo I am glad to be headed south for it is, in daytime, nice and warm here!!!! I didn't do much today, some walking, some reading...some sleeping on the roof of the Hotel. But I made all the arrangements for the next week. So tomorrow I will be picked up at 3.30 am (HELP!) to take the 3 hours and escorted drive to Abu Simbel. I have never been there and at the same time I will do my first activation (first Chakra, 1D, connecting to the deep core of Earth and myself, power) On the way back we will also visit Philae with the temple dedicated (mainly) ... read more

Yesterday I tried to get a seat on the train, so I went to the Lions Pit, that is nr 11 perron....I know it from previous travels...my brother Ben knows...LOL..... I got very upset because I thought they didn't want to sell me a ticket.....I went from line to line....1st class, 2nd class, 3 rd class...it is not until now (the next day) I heard that many Egyptians are celebrating holidays so all seats are gone for at least a week...OEPS I managed to get a flight (!) to Aswan (from Cairo), which costed about the same as a nightsleep-train. The whole scene in the Railwaystation, with me getting upset and angry...it was a wonderful and nice lesson to beware of my emotions and take it very very easy. It is also, and then I will ... read more

Up before three because we were being collected from the hotel to join the convoy to Abu Simbel. Unfortunately we were the first pick up point & so spent an hour driving around Aswan picking up other passengers. Once on the road our journey was fast & furious, with the convoy reaching speeds of around one hundred & fifty kilometres per hour. I couldnĀ“t see the speedo, however this estimation is NOT an exaggeration of how fast we were travelling. Fortunately the road was straight for the most part & I was still tired from lack of sleep last night, so managed to doze most of the way. Upon arriving at Abu Simbel, I soon realized the long drive was well worth the time & effort of an early start. Just the statues outside the temples ... read more
