Thats hello in Arabic by the way! See - i'm starting to learn the language already!! So now coming to you from Aswan, 800km south of cairo - much nicer than Cairo coz its just a small town so it's nowhere near as manic and busy and the people are even friendlier! We got here on an epic train journey which took 12 hours, im still recovering from that journey now! The heat doesn't make it better, this close to the equator it's very hot in the sun, but we're coping so far! Have done a few cool things here, had a ride on a pretty damn ugly camel into the desert to see a deserted monastry. That journey has made the sore legs from the train journey even worse as they are bloddy awkward to ... read more

We had a variety packed bread, bread, and bread breakfast on the train. We had a selection consisting of a piece of white bread, a croissant, and a hamburger bun. Mmm…bread. Of course I needed to tip the porter (who wasn’t afraid to ask for it) before I got off the train. Once we got to the hotel, I talked with Ahmed to see if my luggage had arrived yet in Cairo. Nope. I now fear for the safety of Milkshake, my stuffed cow. Who knows what depraved things French airline baggage handlers could do with a stuffed cow after a heavy night of drinking my liquor. Hopefully they are not making brie out of him. Luckily the hotel we are staying at here, the Isis Hotel, is much better than the one we stayed at ... read more

High dam stats: # 3.6km in length # 1.0 km in width # 111m high @ highest point # Has 18 x the amount of material uses for the great temple of Khofu # 35000 workers involved in construction # 451 of which died in the process Got into aswan after pretty much no sleep on the train and we got picked up and taken to the hotel. Then went on a tour of the high dam (which provides most of egypt's power) then a short boat ride to philae (Agilkia Is). Where the Isis temple complex had been moved stone by stone after the constuction of the dam left it submerged 6 months of the year. Got a bit of sleep only to get up @ 3 in the morn to get in the convoey ... read more

Temples and early mornings not really being my thing I decided not to go to Abu Simbel. The Australians on the MS Melody were outraged, and convinced me that it was an absolute must see. So I did the tourist thing and got up at 3.30am to join a convoy through the desert to this monument. For those of you who (like me) have never heard of the Abu Simbel temple it was erected by Ramesses II and is dedicated to himself. However besides being a large monument it’s claim to fame is that when the Nasser damn was built it was going to be submerged, so UNICEF stepped in, chopped it up into little pieces and carted it up the hill thus bringing it into the spotlight this century. The convoy out there was pretty ... read more

Sleeper trains are awful. Someone didn't manage to tell me that Egypt actually gets cold- the last minute packing of trousers was invaluable, and should have included a sleeping bag. We were sitting up in the train and I wore all the clothes I could and froze my ass off on the 12 hour trip. I have trouble sleeping on trains and planes at the best of time due as I sleep on my stomach... however matters were made even worse by the fact that I couldn't feel my toes! When we finally arrived in Aswan we were all a bit jaded, and the Imaginative tours cruise boat looked positively luxurious! I was actually surprised because I was under the misapprehension that we were going on Fellucca's. Thank god we were not though, because I would ... read more

We are leaving on a felucca tomorrow for three days and three nights sailing on the Nile to a village outside Edfu village, or, at least we think we are going on a felucca trip - it's been a bit vague but we think we have cut a deal with a man called Captain Washington. Everyone in Aswan seems to know Captain Washington so we think he must be a man to be reckoned with. The felucca captains here have names as colourful as their personalities - Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Flamingo, Captain Hash etc. And some are so colourful as to be on the blacklist of felucca captains to not go sailing with which the tourist office in Aswan will gladly share with you if you are trying to organise a felucca trip on your ... read more

Hi all We were up quite early to take the 3 hour bus trip to Abu Simbel. This also meant leaving the ship behind, which was quite sad. To get to Abu Simbel, the tourist buses all go in a convoy with a police escort. The police escort is because of the proximity to the Sudan border, and the military checks all vehicles all along the route, so if you are in the convoy, the trip is much faster and the military do not constantly stop the buses the check the passengers etc. On the way there, on the side of the road, we saw an old tourist bus just covered in bullet holes.. hmm, I was glad for the police escort. The only problem is, when you arrive at Abu Simbel, it seems like every ... read more

My name is Aghmed. Well that is what I tell everyone. So many people ask me my name that I have given up with Lloyd, way too hard. So Aghmed works and when I am feeling a bit crazy i throw Mohhammed out there as well. I have met so many people that say 'oh wow, my name is Aghmed too" Staying in the Noorhan Hotel for 10 pounds a night which is $2.85. I did however have to go and buy my own toilet paper for a pound. It was rather amusing having to gesture to the shop keeper what I wanted, yes indeed. Our good friend Gaddie has arrived and is now travelling with us in Egypt. He has certainly brought some new funk to the table. We are in Aswan in the moment, ... read more

Yesterday we sailed on a felucca down the River Nile. It was very peaceful and scenic. The current goes from south to north and the wind from north to south so when you are heading into the wind the breeze is nice... The Nile River goes for 5,000 miles and is the longest river system in the world. When we docked on the side of the Sahara desert, I was surprised at how clean the Nile water was, we bottled some and it was crystal clear.... they say that the Nile refreshes itself everyday by the strong currents. A couple on the tour decided to drink the Nile water, they say that you can drink it but they don't recommend it and I don't intend to try it either!!! guess we'll just check to see if ... read more
