The train was on time, which meant we arrived before the hotel rooms were ready and there wasn´t much else to do but jump on the net to pass time. Intrepid have recently switched from seats to sleepers on the overnight train (thank God), as the latter train arrives much earlier. Great idea, but a shame the hotel wasn´t a little more on the ball as it was a bit painful hanging around in the lobby for well over an hour. Lorraine, Jan, Doug and I met up to explore the area surrounding the hotel and to get in a spot of shopping. Had a group lunch on a floating restaurant recommended by Sam before taking a boat ride on the Nile to Elephantine Island. Rode a camel past St Simeons Monastery before visiting a Nubian ... read more

That overnight train trip... To get to Aswan was a mission in itself. It takes an overnight train to get there. And not any overnight train, an EGYPTIAN overnight train. The selling point of the train is that the seats recline to 45°. That's it. Oh, the other advantage....there's A toilet at the end of the carriage which you really really really don't want to use. The boys checked it out and were themselves extremely relucant to use it, but when you drink lots of Egyptian vodka on a 13 hour train trip, like they did, you kinda need to use it. Now might be a good time to mention that our lovely train driver somehow managed to get us 3 HOURS BEHIND SCHEDULE. When we finally made it to Aswan it was midday AND warm. Finally Egypt as it was supposed to be experienced. I believe it rains in Aswan about once a decade so I was feeling pretty good about the sunny day factor. Day one in Aswan was mostly free time. We saw the Aswan High dam (looks like a dam, shockingly), and then the Temple of Isis at Phylae. This temple is located on an island in the middle of the Nile, so very picturesque. The most impressive thing about it though, was the fact that it was relocated by the Egyptian government. Block by block. It looks like its been there forever. Here's a government who protects its national treasures with fake xray machines, but can move a million ton temple and put it back ... read more

Cruising down the Nile is a magical experience, we moored at Edfu, received a wake up call at 7ish and ducked down for a buffet breakfast. After breakfast we headed ashore to visit the well preserved Temple of Horus, considered one of the finest examples of temple construction! Later on that night we enjoyed a fancy-dress party with of course a Egyptian theme. By the end of the night we arrived at the city of Luxor, truly a beautiful city. ... read more

We were quite bummed to leave Luxor, particularly as we had to leave it at 6am. However, our destination held the promise of amazing temples and the start of our felucca ride so we were happy to be up at such a delightfully early hour. The reason for this departure time is that everyone has to travel in a convoy of buses. I don't understand the point as it is meant to be for our safety but what better to target than 20 bus loads of tourists with only one police car to protect them. Not that we had to worry about that for long as most of the bus drivers assumed that 'convoy' meant 'race' and soon sped off at various rates. By the time we were out of Luxor we were well and truly ... read more

Memphis, Saqqara & Aswan Egypt For my last afternoon in Cairo I decided to squeeze in a visit to the ancient sites of Memphis and Saqqara located about 30 miles south of the city. Memphis was one of the great cities of the ancient world but has now all but disappeared from centuries of pillaging and floods. It’s a fairly unimpressive site with only a few significant monuments and statues of Ramses II. Nearby at Saqqara is the Step pyramid built for Zoser. The step pyramid is significant because it is Egypt’s (and the worlds) first stone monument. At most of these sites, the tourism cashiers like to double dip...they charge you to enter the grounds which you assume is the full admission, then once you park and walk up to the actual site, they charge ... read more

First things first, the whole 55 mile statistic is more or less a vague estimate based on using my thumb and the scale in the Lonely planet book. I had noticed lately that my blog titles were rather unimpressive and thus attempted something a tad more poetic. My time in the desert came to an exciting close when my cab from the bus station ran out of gas en route to downtown Cairo from the "bus station" and I had to push it across several lanes in what felt like the fires of hell while endless wafts of exhaust subsequently destroyed my lungs. I had no sympathy for the cab driver whatsoever after learning that gas here costs about 1.3 Egyptian pounds per liter. That works out to roughly 33 cents USD. After that little debacle ... read more

I got the title for this blog entry from Lawrence of Arabia. And yes, it's hot, hotter, hottest here. Today, according to the hotel thermometer by the pool is was 48 degrees Celcius. That's 118 degrees Fahrenheit. But it's an incredibly dry heat, it's so unlike any weather I have every experienced before. It's as if I were standing in front of a fire, well two fires, one behind and one in front. And when the wind blows, it blows hot air, not a cooling breeze. The hotel is of course air conditioned, and there is a pool, both of which I've taken advantage of. I don't know if there is a trick to staying cool here. I drink water as often as I breath. I wear long trousers, wear a hat with side flaps and ... read more

Well we thought Luxor was bad but the further south you go in Egypt the hotter it gets! Yesterday was a barmy 50 degrees which is rather warm and apparently they can get up to 55- 56 deg on a truly hot day. Fair enough though as it is the middle of the Egyptian summer and we are only a couple of kms from the Sahara Desert! Anyway on Thursday morning we had a very early start (3am!) in order to travel south through the desert in convoy to Abu Simbel. Yes thats right a convoy with full military escort! We were happy to be baby-sat though, as Abu Simbel is only 40 km north of the Sudanese border (say no to civil war, ethnic cleansing and kids with AK-47s). It was a bit over 3 ... read more

Arrived in Aswan after an interesting trip on the train. Apparently it was first class but the seats weren't even bolted down properly. Anyway, we arrived at the hotel and after about 4 hrs of sleep, we were up at 3.00am to board the bus to Abu Simbel. All the buses leave at the same time and escorted by police. Our tour leader said it was for organisational reasons but our tour guide said it was because terrorists operate in southern Egypt. The bus did the 300km trip in about 2hrs 40mins. Lets just say they were going quite fast and it made us reach for our seatbelts! Anyway, we made it there and back safely. Abu Simbel is two massive temples which the Egyptians moved 55 metres up and 210m back before they flooded the ... read more
