Friday July 14, 2006 - Got up late today and packed up and checked out. I still am carrying around three bags - my backpack, my daypack, and the bag I bought to carry snacks in for the airport stint but now has some souveneirs. Put this all in storage and then went out for a bit. Came back and met Roger for lunch. He had a new friend - Declan, from N. Ireland. The three of us got some lunch at Felfela and then decided to see some more of Cairo. Got a taxi to take us to Khan al Kahlili, the big market place near Islamic Cairo. Here felt like real Egypt -all the random shops and markets you'd expect down winding alleyways. Here we ran into the Canadians. After walking around here for ... read more

James back again... Well, after the delicious roast chicken with spaghetti bolognaise etc. (That's what you call fusion cooking...?!), we left for the train ride to Aswan. Before we even got out of the street our hotel was on, our bus was blocked in by a car that had been left in the middle of the road, contents: a couple of unsupervised kids. Our bus driver, not wanting to make us late for the train, decided to get in the car and relocate it for the owner, with the kids still sutting in the back seat...., just as the driver returned from their "quick stop in". At the time our fearless leader Ahmed had been giving our briefing for the day/night ahead. Not one for time wasting he did what any self respecting tour leader does ... read more

We joined the Felucca boat at 10:30 am in Aswan. The Felucca was captained by Eub and his first mate and cook named Mohammed. The great thing about the Felucca is that you have nothing to do but relax. The crew takes care of all the sailing jobs and the cook prepares your meals. All you have to do to lounge around on the mat under an awning to protect you from the sun while watching the Nile, Date Palms, and Mango trees go by. The first night we stopped on a little island that was home to water buffalo that is that is looked after by there care takers who live in the village nearby. The Felucca is like a step back in time where everything is simple and you can relax. ... read more

I awoke at 3:00am to get ready and be picked up by the driver of our mini bus that was going to take us to Abu Simbel. In order for tourists to go to Abu Simbel you have to travel in a police convoy. Now the idea of Convoy is lost by the Egyptians because as soon as the convoy starts all the buses, vans, and cars try to race to the front. Its a mad dash down the highway in the desert that takes you to Abu Simbel. So after a 2 1/2 hour drive our bus made it to Abu Simbel. Now before the Aswan High Dam was built Abu Simble was located lower down the mountain but UNESCO saved the temple from being flooded and moved to the temple to higher ground and ... read more

I spent a semi restless night on the overnight train from Cairo to Aswan. The train was 2 hours late because between Luxor and Aswan some thieves had stolen the communication cables for the train to communicate with the stations. So with no communication the train went down the track very slowly and stopped frequently. After arriving in Aswan I was greeted with a spectacular view of the Nile. The water is semi blue with Feluccas (Sail Boats) sailing down the nile and date palms all along the shore. After taking a nap our group headed to a boat to be taken across the Nile to a small village. We were shown the home of the boat driver and watched a video of his cousins marriage. Later we taken to the desert where we mounted our ... read more

Day 5: Cairo to Aswan Let's see.. Last you heard from me, I was in a cafe with hooka smokers and domino players, right outside the fruit market.. That night, we took a 14 hour train ride from Cairo to Aswan.. Definately not a sleeper car, we were in decent seats, but they kept the light on all the time. Leaving at 10pm, we arrived right at noon.. Checked into our hideaway next to the Nile. After a few hours rest, we headed over to Elaphantine Island and relaxed at a traditional Nubian home. We then went off for a nice camel ride across the sanddunes and ended up at another Nubian house with a fabulous meal. Nice relaxing day along the Nile, all the village children came and danced for us, then with us. We ... read more

Just spent 4 days on a beautiful old cruise ship wandering down the Nile. Not too many people...some a bit old but a few like minded souls. The weather a constant 38 so we spent a bit of time in the pool. Now we are on an island in a beautiful huge 5 star hotel.. very grand. We are visiting a Nubian village this afternoon. Was Othello a Nubian??? All is going well and we are looking forward to our next adventure in the Greek Island. Hope you are all well and not too cold. Love Heather hi Sue and all, Sorry but the blog wasn'tworking too well in paris, I'll get some postcards in Greece though. Egytians are very friendly and funny but hassle the hell out of us on the streets to sell us ... read more

Geo: 23.9698, 32.7945Finally got some sleep this morning on the train. The seats are great and comfortable, but I found it hard to fall asleep. Aswan seems like a small city, much cleaner, less hectic than Cairo, like it already. The porters took our bags to our hotel and we walked the two minute walk. Don't know how I'm going to learn how to carry my bag if others are keen to do it for me. Our hotel is beautiful, overlooking the Nile, which is blue here and not brown muck like in Cairo. It has a pool, hope I get around to getting in it. We had a quick tour of the town and had an Egyptian lunch as a group. It was yummy. Seven of us wandered through the market. Everything seemed to be ... read more

Still no luggage…I wonder what my L.L. Bean fleece will fetch on eBay. Do the French even have eBay? I really could have used the fleece, and jeans too, last night as the evenings are cool on the Nile. Visit to Abu Simbel In the morning we all got up early to take a trip to Abu Simbel, 280km southwest of Aswan. This wasn’t part of the original itinerary, but since every one else wanted to go, I decided to go too (I’m all about groupthink). Some of the group got up at 3AM to take a 3 hour drive to Abu Simbel...which was done with a police escort. The rest of us decided to take a plane to get there, so got to sleep in until 6:30. Airport security was laughable…with the security guards jokingly ... read more
