Our trip to the Falls began on the Paraguayan side of the border. After breakfast at the hotel (Austria, there are a number of German owned/themed hotels in Paraguay), a breakfast somewhat smaller than the “needs to be seen to be believed” promises of the guidebook, we went to exchange some American dollars for the Brazilian Reals we would need on the other side of the border. Having crossed the bridge the previous evening we were aware that the Falls were not close by in Foz do Iguaçu, so we decided to take a cab. The cab driver spoke Spanish with a Portuguese accent (Portuguese being the language of Brazil), but the languages are not that different, so Paul and Rosa were pretty certain of the price he quoted, Seis (6) Reals. If you’re thinking this ... read more

After the boat ride under the falls we decided to stop by the Parque das Aves, a bird park that features most of the birds of South America as well as a few from Africa. Many of the birds, unfortunately, were in a cage, which makes for not so great photography, and the mid-afternoon lighting was having a strange effect on my camera, so many of the photos were blurred. Our cab driver was still with us as we toured the bird park. He had been with us through every tour and attraction we visited (I guess they don’t mind letting the cab drivers who bring them customers in for free). It was pretty late in the afternoon by the time we made it back to Foz do Iguaçu and the bridge. Since I had all ... read more

English Flight Gol Santa Cruz - Campo Grande. Departure time 01:40 am!! Connection flight Campo Grande - Sao Paolo at 04:40 am... ok, it was cheap but surely not the most stilish way to enter Brazil. Anyway, at 06:40 am two zombies carrying italian passports got off of the plane and set foot on the brazilian soil (actually, Campo Grande is already in Brazil but at 4 am we were not completely concious... we still wonder how we got into the second plane). In this precarious state we had to tackle one of the most impressive metropolitan jungle, where huge skyscrapers and shanty favelas live close to each other, witnessing the ambiguities of the brazilian society. Our last days in Bolivia were not exactly relaxing (over there we started dreaming, for the first time in our ... read more

We've now been in Brazil almost exactly two months and leave tomorrow for Argentina. We're in Foz do Iguazu to see the waterfalls on the Brazil, Argenitian, Paraguan border. Rather than attempting to describe them myself, you can see them described much better here and save me lots of typing. We did the Brazlian side yesterday and are off to the Argentinian side tomorrow. We were hoping to get into Paraguay as well, but it seems the border is closed, nobody is very sure why, but that's South America for you. ... read more

I wanted to go to Brasil this morning, so I got up early and hopped a bus from the Argentinian side of the river to the Brazillian side. When I got to the Brazillian border crossing, there wasn't anyone stopping me from entering the country without a visa... so I said "Sweet I got in without a 120$ visa." I went to the international bus station to buy a ticket to visit my friend Houston, originally from Austin, but now living in Florianopolis. They wouldn't sell me a ticket without a visa... the information lady told me to go back to the border, get a stamp, and then everything would work out. So I left my stuff at the bus station and went back to the border. At the border they told me I had to ... read more

Iguaçu Falls lie on the border of Brazil and Argentina so are ideally viewed from both sides. As Argentina is much cheaper I decided best to stay there and a sneaky way to get my visa extended as the dopey woman at Rio airport only gave me 30 days! Foz do Iguaçu is the Brazilian town and Puerto Iguazu is the Argentinian town. From Caxambu I was told the only way was via Sao Paolo and as the guide book said 6 buses per day from there I though it would be fine. After a 6 hour ride to Sao Paolo, all the bus lines said no more buses until 5.30pm the next day, or to Puerto Iguazu on 13th March! I had a little strop to no avail and got a bus to Curitiba, kind ... read more

I realised that I haven't written anything since the end of the carneval. Hmm... A lot of things have happened. After Salvador, which I loved, I have been visiting Floripa, very beautiful and another one of my favorite places of the trip. In the end I unfortunately only got one and a half day there (the plane from Salvador was late so I had to spend one night at a five star hotel in Brasilia, paid for by the airline, too bad for me, hehe...) which was way to short. Luckily I met a very interesting and nice Brazilian girl that showed me around and told me where to go and what to do, so I ended up doing the most of my short trip. Now I am in Foz do Iguacu and I have visited ... read more

Oh no... I couldn´t resist the temptation. I bought a pair of slippers-looking Ipanema sandals yestesday. I´ve been controlling, really. Saw so many nice slippers in Rio but I didn´t buy. But this one very nice and cheap, so, hee... Hmmm.... How am I going to squeeze this 5th pair of shoes in my backpack? ... read more

Iguazu Falls is divided between Brazil and Argentina, with 25% in Brazil and 75% in Argentina. Some argue that it´s better at the Brazilian side cos you can get the paranoma view of it while the Argentina side brings you closer to the falls. We did the Brazilian side yesterday and the Argentina side today. Conclusion. We definitely prefer the Argentina side. See the picture for yourself. Do we have to say more? ... read more

Finally got out of Rio. Took a long long journey from Rio de Janiero to Foz do Iguacu. On this 25 hrs journey, some thoughts abt the interesting habits of Brazilian ppl flashed through my mind. Here´s some to share (pictures to be accompanied later) 1. With Rio being renowned for its beautiful beaches, it is without doubt that we get to see ppl walking ard in swimwear. But in this city, they not only wear swimwear on the beach but also on the streets, on buses & subway, at street parades and even at places of interest like the statue of Christ The Redeemer!!!! But I must say these ppl really have got good bodies. 2, Even pregnant women wear a bikini top, showing off their big belly! Not bad for a way to save ... read more
