Left BA and headed north through the Pampas of Argentina (where all the cows live!). Couple of long truck days got us to the border with Paraguay at Encarnacion. Once into Paraguay we stopped at Trinidad to visit some Jesuit ruins, which included lots of beheaded statues because inhabitants of the site after the Jesuits left thought the statues contained treasures. Then to campsite nearby, the best one yet, with a lovely pool, plus slide and diving board!! Spent the whole morning at the pool the next day, not leaving the site till lunchtime. Got to Ascunsion late afternoon, but like a ghost town, the quietest capital city I´ve ever seen! I suppose it was Sunday, but still.... Attempted a bit of shopping the next day, very traumatic for us girls trying to buy new bikinis, ... read more

So, what have we been up to since our last blog? Stayed in a place called Florianopolic - on the isla de Santa Catarina. Rented a quality apartment for the same price as a hostel which was pretty cool. Florianopolis was lovely... however we had one or two encounters - one of which i´ll leave til we get home!! Considering its such a touristy place we were surprised that so few people spoke English but figured we´re all pretty streetwise so ventured out on our own to a beach a bit further away. Well our sense of direction is obviously shot to sh*t as we plodded around in the boiling hot sun unable to find any water! So we ventured home - another mission - to our beach at praia de ingleses. The next day we ... read more

It was a long drive once again from Asuncion, to cross the border and on to Brazil. It was very hot and stuffy on our bus too. But the time soon passed. The border was manic, many people cross from Brazil to buy duty free goods on the Paraguay side of the border. It was then a short drive in to the town of Foz, home of the amazing Iguassu Falls. We pitched up our tents at the campsite which has a pool, cooked dinner and had a swim, and celebrated a birthday of a girl on our trip. There are also other travellers at our site, this is getting more common now as everybody in this region is heading for Rio for Carnaval next week. Thursday morning we left the camp at 8am, and crossed ... read more

For Valentines Day we decided to treat ourselves to a night in the beautiful colonial hotel in the Falls National Park (Brazilian side). After a few nights of camping we were looking forward to actually feeling clean again; not to speak of the TV (complete with CNN and FOX) and a hairdryer! After checking in as early as as they would let us we went to the bar and sampled a few cocktails before a quick dip and a game of volleyball in the pool. The hotel was mainly full of rich americans. (Many of whom Noel noticed had younger looking faces and breasts than the rest of their bodies.) We also saw an English couple easily in their 80s; the old boy was snorkelling in the pool (bless him) and his wife sporting a string ... read more

Hi all! Thanks for all your comments - we love seeing them, and well done Stu for winning yourself a postcard! It´ll be in the post soon but may take a couple of weeks :) Well, we´ve made it to the next major highlight of the tour - Iguassu Falls! Utterly, utterly amazing and breaktaking! Luckily for you we´re not boring you with all 110 photos of the 285 different waterfalls at all angles, but even so the photos we took don´t do them justice! We spent the first side on the Argentian side, where we basically took different walks above the different falls - Devil´s Throat (main bit), 3 Musketeers.. and then went on a boat ride which beats all Chessington Adventures! The boat ride was US$30 and unmissable for anyone heading that way (thanks ... read more

We were pretty slow at leaving Bonito - partly because we liked it there and partly because we thought our bus journey to Foz would be hell. It was. The journey was supposed to toke 17 hours but ended up being 23! This wasn´t too bad, we are getting used to long buses, however for 7 hours, a Brazilian girl sitting next to us shouted, sang and told jokes at the top of her voice. By the time she got off I was climbing the walls and even Noel (who is the most tolerant person in the world) was irrate. But anyway, we arrived in Foz at 4am and got a taxi to a hostal we had pre-booked a room in.......only the night porter had no knowledge of our coming and only had dorm rooms left, ... read more

Here I am finally in the beautiful country of Brazil. I Last Night I just crossed the border. Accompanied by my good friends, Carmela and Ricardo, and their sleeping baby Ema. She is so cute she calls me, Yes! We crossed the border tranquilamente ( with out problem) . It was dark and very very hot...all i wanted to do was get somwhere if air conditioning. My friends are very nice but they did not have air and its very hot right now here and humid. It´s 90 degrees here and very humid. So last night when i got here to the youth hostel... i was so happy when they said would you like a room with air. It was 18 reales like 9 us Dollars or so. But I was willing to pay it to ... read more

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I thought Niagara was good, but this is just spectacular!! Did the Brazilian side yesterday, the Argentinian side is meant to be even better! Happy New Year to you all!!! I´ve decided to give up on the long, in-depth journals I´m afraid!!! So here´s one covering the last, well, almost a week I think!!! New Years Eve I tried to go to Santa Teresa during the day, but the queue for the little train was long and slow, and it was just too hot, so I went to look at the Cathedral instead. In the evening, the party started at about 7.30 at the hostel, with a big group of brazilian friends of the owners and employees thrown in. At some point we went down to the beach. There we had the 25 minute fireworks display, surrounded by everyone in the white. Amazing. I don´t have the words. Then some of us walked to Ipanema beach for a bit. That ... read more
