After another night on the road and lots more driving, we arrived in Foz do Iquaçu, the brazilian city closest to the mighty waterfalls for which the town is named. The cataratas are actually about 275 separate waterfalls altogether on the river iguaçu; a million or so years ago they used to be where iguaçu emptied into the river parana' (which forms the border between brazila and paraguay) but do to erosion they have moved farther and farther upstream. due to different erosion rates of rock types, there are two levels of falls in most places, like steps. they are amazing. To visit the cataratas (waterfalls) you can go to either the brazilian or argentinian sides of the river, though we (and most tourists) opted for both. you need about a day to do each side. ... read more

It poured with rain today, then it stopped, then it poured again and then it bucketed. We still had a great time though. This morning we had in mind to get the bus to Assucao, the capital of Paraguay, tomorrow night. Then we saw a sign for cheap coach rides to Buenos Aires and thought that was a good idea, as Spanish lessons will be difficult to find in Paraguay, as untravelled and tourist-centred as it is. Anyway, we decided against both of those things, as they sidetracked from our trtekking plans in Peru and Bolvia too much (Buenos Aires is about 1300 miles south of our plans for christ's sake!), and will get a coach to the Pantanal area tomorrow instead - the Pantanal is the largest wetlands in the world, on the border of ... read more

Like I said before, travelling without plans is great, as long as you have enough time to do whatever takes your fancy along the way. Knowing your limits is frustrating. Countless places and activities get left behind with promises of coming back one day. We only had one place which we were desperate to go to: Macchu Picchu in Peru. Which was why our pouring over the cheap tickets to Asunción, Paraguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina came to nothing. Instead we decided to hang around in Foz before heading off in a vaguely Westerly direction. We had been so impressed by the waterfalls the day before that we decided to go back and see them again. We got on the bus with that intention, but quickly changed our minds when we saw a sign to the ... read more

Someone once asked me if my adventurous lifestyle was a reflection of wanting to differentiate myself from those around me. He asked if I thought I was above them and wanted to make that overtly obvious. He thought I was wasting my time and money, and should snap out of my childish fantasy-world. That was a case of complete misunderstanding and a clash of personalities. But on reflection, how much of what we do as travellers is based on our experiences at home and with others? I feel like I travel because I need to have my options wide open. I want to be doing something new and unusual all the time, and if trapped in one place I get serious claustrophobia. I don't know where the feeling comes from, but I love the idea that ... read more

After getting to Foz do Iguacu at 6am and in the freezing cold we weren´t in the best of moods, but still managed to walk all the way to the hostel (which took about 2 hours) to save money. After we got here we settled down and then headed out to explore the town. It´s nothing special, a bit like Curitiba really, but we weren´t here for the that, we were here for the billions of gallons of water that stream down the 250 waterfalls just down the road! A very impressive sight it was indeed, when we finally got there. If it had~´t been for the teenager projectile vomiting it would have been perfect. Best views of Brazil so far! The falls are so incredibly huge and vast, and the rainbows and mist clouds so ... read more

We know there are hundreds of blogs on here from Foz de Iguazu - so one more wont make any difference !! Its actually been a while since we were there - there have been a few developments since then - but all the details will follow in other blogs. So onto Foz - well imagine Jurassic Park but without the dinosaurs - imagine rainforests - and the most beautiful waterfalls in the world - and you are only half way to imagining what Foz is like. A picture is worth a thousand words - in this case definitely. Enjoy. ... read more

In Iquacu, we´re staying at the Tropical das Cataratas hotel in the national park. food~s great of course. The first day, Candy and I walked the trails and checked out the falls which is 100 ft. from the hotel. It got dark on us and we walked back in the dark, thinking about the 140 jaguars running loose in the park. About that time a bat flew in my face but he maneuvered out of the way before I jerked my head off. Candy thought something had bit me. just a little excitement in your...... ordinary kind of park. Now we~re on to Buenos Aires tomorrow. yea!!! No wild cats there I hear. Bats, either. Tuesday 5th April : Arrive Foz do Iguacu, visit Brazil side of falls, transfer to Puerto Iguazu Arrived no probs, chap in tourist kiosk spoke the best American English so far , directed us to the bus for Terminal Urbana. Outside we were waved to a particular queue and paid for the next bus which arrived almost immediately. Got on, then off at the TU where I found a TIC. Established how to get to the Parque Nacional (fare included in what we’d already paid) and where we could leave our bags. Off to the park. Generaly impressive but no real sense of scale, but I’d already read it was beter from the Argentinian side. Took lots of photos( losing Sao Paolo photos in the process - kick, kick) then back on the bus to Foz. ... read more
