This trip has helped me realize that there is so much out there in the world and that there is so much substance to be experienced and lived in such a short lifetime. In reflecting back on my past year at Georgia Tech, I’ve come to realize that I have been living the college life. Georgia Tech has been my life. My relationships, interactions, investments, and time have all been contained within the institution of Georgia Tech. My life has been my university. This distance I have had between myself and the Georgia Tech I have built for myself has helped me to realize that what I really need is not a life in Georgia Tech, but a life in which Georgia Tech plays a part. Instead of college being my life, I need to build ... read more

Today I gazed on one of the protested "eight" wonders of the world: Iguazu Falls. From the Brazilian side of the falls (the falls share prominant borders with Argentina and Brazil though are located near Uruguay and Paraguay as well), the most beautiful side (though an Argentine would never admit this to your face!). Heavy droughts southern Brazil has been experiencing over the past few years that have been devastating to the crops have also been devastating to the falls who's water flow yesterday was only a third of that which it normally is, but that was even up from the one sixth of normal it was at on Wednesday before a day's worth of rainstorms! Despite it's suboptimal water flow, the falls are quite impressive. Formed by basaltic lava flows that have tierd and worn ... read more

Even though multiple travel agents had told us that we could not go into Brazil without paying the US $100 for a visa, and multiple cab drivers had told us they would ¨sneak¨us in to Brazil for US $50 each, we found out from a simple conversation with an agent at the bus station in Puerto Iguazu that, yes, for a day trip to view the falls, a United States citizen could go in to Brazil by paying the US $1 bus fare. So, we did not have to risk sneaking into Brazil after all, and it was defenitely worth seeing the falls from that side to do it. Something to know is that Portugese and Spanish sound nothing alike, so don´t assume that you´ll be able to understand Portugese if you speak Spanish (although most ... read more

We wake up and leave the hotel, we have planned to go to Argentina for a few days before our flight, to enjoy some cheaper living and the famous Iguazu Falls. The falls are viewable from the Brazil side but its not as good and the Argentina side offers and entire natioanl park to wander around and several treks to many falls. After a few sticky buses we arrive at the much talked about Hostel Inn, set out of town it has a huge pool and lounging area out the front and the foyer-reception-bar-games area is an airy open plan space with loads of sofas and a book exchange the size of a small library, later we find all books there are rubbish. Unfoirtunately the hostel is full, so after booking for Sunday we go next ... read more

Our first destination after Rio was the costal town of Buzios, made famous by Bridget Bardot during the 60´s, we believe?? Apparently known as Brazil's St Tropez the place consited of fancy bars and restaurants and a host of beautiful beaches. We stayed a couple of nights in the town which was blatently designed to bring in the foreign $$$! After heading back to Rio for another footy match it was time to head South with our first point of call the picturesque Isle a Grande. An Island situated just off the coast about 3hrs bus journey south of Rio on Brazil´s Costa Verde (Green Coast). All along the Costa Verde you´ll find lush tropical forest meeting wonderful sandy beaches and Isle Grande was no exception. Despite it raining while we were there , we really ... read more

Firstly, the title does not have much relevance to anything, we just liked it! Things have been quite hectic since the last blog. We made it to Sao paulo after a 6 hour coach journey, a City we had heard so many bad stories about. We would have avoided going there to be honest except that we really wanted to go to Skolbeats. It is a massive City! so big in fact that its difficult to describe. Basically, its not very pretty, too big to get anywhere quickly and clearly dangerous. The people living there live in fear, apartment blocks (with mesh over windows/balconys) have 24 hour security sitting behind 2 or 3 huge iron gates. We spent 3 nights there. The first in search of Skolbeats tickets (quite a challenge), the second to find somewhere ... read more

Since my first trip to Argentina six years ago, Iguazu Falls has always been somewhere where I wanted to visit. I remembered hearing many times that it made Niagara Falls in New York look tiny, and that it was one of the most impressive natural wonders of South America. I finally got my chance to see Iguazu Falls as the third destination in my tour of Brazil, and it didn´t disappoint. A Long Day of Travelling, and Lots of Stolen Electronics in Paraguay We left Parati for Iguazu at 9:00 AM Tuesday, and did not arrive until 11:30 AM Wednesday. That is a long day of travelling. It wasn´t supposed to be quite that long, but our first bus from Parati to São Paulo blew a flat tire an hour down the road. While we waited ... read more

Well it has been a very busy few weeks for me. I went north from Buenos Aires to the wonderful place of the Iguazu Falls. Oh my goodness it is sooo beautiful here!!! The first day here I had to be smuggled into Brazil as I think my passport is sitting on a shelf near the sonographers somewhere. From here you can see the length of the falls which are mainly in Argentina. Managed to meet some of the local wildlife in the form of coatis, which are actually quite feral little things and didn't want to be seen talking to such a refined creature as me. So I left them foraging in the garbage and moved on. The second few days here were spent in the Argentinian side of the falls. Wow, so cool. It ... read more

well folks its been a long time since i wrote last but here goes on filling you in on the last few weeks of my journey. march 17th - march 21 Foz Do Iguacu Brazil arrived in foz on paddys days after another unadventourous bus ride from curitiba. and it was hot about 40 degrees and the humidity was quite high too. which all made for a hot and sweaty al and ruth. since it was paddys day we decided to see if the irish connection had spread as far as foz and looked for an irish bar. again those people in hostel were pretty useless and told there was an irish bar in foz but we couldnt find it and then we later laerned that there was no irish bar in foz. to be honest ... read more

Well after the stress of class for a week I decided to get away from the city for a week of relaxation and first port of call was ´Cataratas del Iguazu´. Everyone I spoke to before leaving that had travelled here said that it was a must see and it was just that and more! The falls are made up of around 275 falls up to 82 metres high along 2.7 km. The water falls at between 300 to 6500 cubic metres per second over the big fall named Garganta del Diablo ( Devil´s Throat) which is 150m wide. Accounts for the huge noise which I am sure can be heard miles away. Legend has it - there is always a legend isn't there - that a god wanted to marry a beautiful aborigine named Naipu ... read more
