There are excursions on offer for today. One is to mountain bike down the worlds most dangerous road, at a descent of some 1,500 meters, and which lasts all day. The other excursion and the one I choose, is to do a tour of the City. We drive around all the sights by bus, and its an amazing bustling place. The tour lasts 3 hours, part of which we go to Moon Valley, so called as it looks like the surface of the moon! In the afternoon I hit the shops with a friend, and spend hours walking around. An authentic football shirt costs around 12 pounds here, and they have teams all around the world, but sizes are hard to come by. In the night we again meet up for a group meal in a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre January 30th 2006

Well, we have moved quickly across Bolivia in the last few days. Saturday in Potosi we did our mine tour, and most of you have read Jords blog to hear about the nightmare but I figured I´d post a few pictures and share my insights on the matter as well. The tour started with everyone gearing up in plastic jackets, coverall pants, gum boots, hard hats and head lamps (powered by a really heavy battery on your back). We went to the miners market and got some Coca leaves and explosives. Things got a lot better real fast! Coca leaves are what they make cocaine out of, although chewing them is basically just like a caffeine rush combined with chewing tobacco, Gav & the Beak would love it, not sure if we can get some across ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz January 30th 2006

We checked out of the hotel in Puno, and drove 2 hours to the Peru / Bolivia border. My first border crossing, got our passports checked and stamped, and walked across the bridge from Peru to Bolivia. Another hour or so drive, and another excursion, this time to Bolivias' most ancient ruin, the site of Tiwanaku. The Tiwanaku's date back earlier than the Incans, and there were some interesting monuments on display. We had lunch, then drove through another huge storm, and made our way to La Paz, capital of Bolivia, and the highest Capital City in the world. Again you feel its harder to breath, nearly 4,000 meters. The city as we approached, looked typically 3rd world as most sights I have seen so far. But then as we got in to the City, there ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Santa Cruz Department » Santa Cruz January 29th 2006

To avoid a 3 day journey by bus to Santa Cruz we decided to fly there from La Paz. Whilst waiting for our flight we entertained ourselves by using the free American Airlines phone to book our return flight to the UK. Our ticket type dictates that we must fly home via Dallas, which was proving difficult at the beginning of June (visions of a cowboy convention in Earls Court????umm). Anyway after lots of being put on hold we finally got a date of return being 11th June. Our flight turned out to be quite remarkable as La Paz has the highest airport in the world and the planes need 5k of runway to lift off, as well as requiring special tires to withstand the increased velocity. Despite this, we had the smoothest take-off we could ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi January 27th 2006

Well Wednesday morning we hopped onto some horses and rode out into the Bolivian mountains just outside of Tupiza. This horseback trip was quite something. Having more confidence after riding in Coroico, they gave me their biggest and fastest horse (although he doesnt like to run) and the three of us set off with our guide. About an hour in our guide said "rapido?" and we agreed. Trot to canter I just about fell off, having only cantered once before in my life I was totally unprepared, fortunetaly I settled things and got my balance and it was all good from there. Oh yeah that is until we got to the town we were staying at and came running in on our horses when the guide stopped everyone suddently (probably because we were in a town?) ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza January 24th 2006

We´re now in southern Bolivia, not far from the Argentine border, which we plan to cross in a day or two. The main idea is to avoid spending too long in Chile, which is expensive. Mind you, anywhere is expensive compared with Bolivia. Our nicest trip in Peru was in the company of the splendid Revels family from San Diego. We travelled to the Manu rainforest, reached after a day jolting along potholed roads and another day puttering upriver in a small boat. It was expensive and uncomfortable, but our powers of endurance were rewarded by the wildlife we saw - red howler monkeys grooming themselves in the trees, black spider monkeys crashing through the branches overhead, and most memorably a family of giant river otters. We got close enough to hear the fish bones crunching ... read more

Our tour across what felt like the entire country of Boliva was heartwarming and to be cherished forever. The salt flats were stunning, and our time in a multitude of Mos Eisley style towns were wonderful. Expecting to see two moons and moisture farms, we instead found llamas, llamas, and more llamas. Oh yes, and flamingos! The reality is that this trip is hard to describe, frankly Bolivia seems to be the most diverse country in terms of opposing landscapes (at least for its size) that only pictures can do it justice. Salt flats, deserts, jungle (although that was when we were north last week) and everything in between makes it simply amazing to traverse (especially in a 4X4 in the back country, during the daytime). Im going to keep this short for now in an ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana January 22nd 2006

The 11.00am bus left for Copacabana at 10.40. Luckily we were on it but more by luck than judgement. Of course, we are well aware that time is not regarded as as fixed as it is back home, but this was our first experience of something happening early as opposed to very late! Three hours into our four hour journey we stopped in San Pablo where the bus was ferried across the strait to San Pedro while the passengers got off and took a boat over. Finally we arrived in the main plaza in Copacabana and were immediately impressed by the ornate cathedral and clean streets. Our chosen hotel had been recommended to us by an English bloke we met in La Paz - a pretty white building overlooking lake Titicaca. We even splashed out the ... read more
