Well my time in London came to a very quick close, I very much enjoyed my stay there and the top notch hospitality provided by Aura and Harvey. My plane back to Canada had some problems because of a power failure in Gatwick, so after landing in Glasgow an hour late, we made our way up and over the far frozen north to the land of cows and Calgarians. It was quite interesting to look out the window and observe the endless frozen tundra of nothingness, I’d always been rather curious to see what northern Canada looks like, and it seems that in the end it’s quite a solemn place. Arriving in Calgary I had plans to meet and stay with another cousin, that afternoon she had a volleyball tournament, so her boyfriend picked me ... read more

March 23rd 2007

Cruising from Paris to London on the Eurostar was a cool experience. The only downside was that I wanted some pictures of both French and English countryside (both of which, at least along this particular route are essentially the same) but because the train goes so incredibly fast (I think around 350km/h), any attempts at a photo from my window seat appeared as simple blurs of green grass and overcast clouds. In fact, looking out the window and actually thinking about it quite freaked me out because I’d never gone that fast on land before and anything remotely near the tracks seems to whiz by before it’s even beside you. I arrived in London and took the underground back to the familiar neighbourhood of Clapham where my cousin Aura and her boyfriend Harvey reside in ... read more

When I got in touch with Frank and we discussed the possibility of me meeting up with him in Paris, I had no idea what to really expect and had done no further planning at all whatsoever once he gave me the OK to show up. So, a few days later when Frank emailed me in Thailand and said that his brother had rented a cabin for a week in the French alps and that he'd see about bringing me along -I immediately got excited. I must have sent Frank 3 or 4 emails making sure I wasn't imposing on his family, but that didn't seem to be an issue. Our long conversations in Honduras about our love of skiing seemed to have paid off. Frank borrowed his neighbours tiny Renault for the drive and ... read more

March 15th 2007

Well, last time I left my readers I was finishing up my time in Thailand. Hua Hin was a great place to visit for all our needs and we finished up there with some skin diving and Mua Thai kickboxing. Actually, it was the kickboxing that occured first and caused some serious hangover problems for the snorkel trip -but those details aren't important. Well actually, they are because they're funny -I guess I changed my mind. T-Bone threw up over the side of the speedboat and James lay on his back in the water moaning for quite sometime, I managed to do allright and even had another beer with lunch. Judy and Larry somehow escaped the wrath of our endless rounds from the night before unscathed. We all dreaded the return to Bangkok but at the ... read more

Well, as my time in Laos came to a close the younglings and I returned back to the booming and bustling country of Thailand where roads are paved, gas is purchased at stations (not out of jars) and cars exist that were manufactured this century. Arriving in the Northeast metropolis of Ubon we quickly determined that life up here was a lot different then the other places in Thailand we've visited on and off over the last few months. For starters it should be mentioned that Ubon is not at all touristy. It's a pleasant (though large) middle class city where dreams seem to become a reality. The local folk are the friendliest I've seen in Thailand and are downright shocked to see foreigners in their little world (though it's actually very large). We burst right ... read more

February 26th 2007

Well my adventures in Laos only seem to get better as we head southward from Luang Prabang. Before I continue though, I want to inform all my readers that the email alerts for my blog updates have been absent for quite awhile, and I had planned to inform everyone with this update, but it seems the website has a new mail server they're testing, so if you haven't read the blog in awhile, take a peek back and there may be new entries that have been written you weren't aware of. In anycase, Laos has been a real delight for me, mainly because there hasn't been a rush to move onwards, and it's always quite refreshing to have more than enough time budgeted for a given location. So, with our freedom of time we decided to ... read more

February 12th 2007

Monday February 12th 2007, day number 500 (if this is innacurate please forgive me as I've lost count several times and Ryan is more or less in charge of maintaining accuracy in the trips official day count). I woke up in what's been nicknamed "the hole" a windowless cell beneath a family home in Laos, conveniently named a "Guesthouse" on the front though it's nothing more than a total dive. We're all fairly certain that our bathroom was used as a set in the horror film "Saw". That's what happens when you insist on paying less than $3.00 for a place to lay your head. It's so bad in fact that I refuse to post pictures. We've had some illness in the trip, the food here in Laos seems to be taking it's toll. Either that ... read more

February 7th 2007

Well, our time in Vietnam was drawing to a quick close but several important social events and a busy eating schedule kept me around in Hanoi a little longer. We arrived to celebrate Trevor's birthday (which I mentioned in my previous blog) and felt that it was a smashing success even though we couldn't find an open establishment after 12:30 or so and had to return home kind of early. Days later we then celebrated Ryan's 26th birthday the only way we knew how -out on the town. Our previous challenges we met facing the curfew in effect (what seemed citywide) were eased when we stumbled across a beer garden with very, very cheap draft beer (possibly the cheapest in the entire world we're told) a pack of rowdy Mexicans, two Scottish lads and some goodfellows ... read more

January 27th 2007

Well our time quickly ended in the lovely coastal town of Muine and we continued on our voyage northward. The next stop on our planned itinerary was Nha Trang, recommended by many-a-people and enjoyed immensely by us all. Our travel gang had increased two more and seen the arrival of two good Canadian boys from Canmore Alberta. It’s been way too long since I’ve been around serious Canadian accents and their constant talk of tobbacer, sleds, and the ridiculously small backpacks they donned and talk of the 8th division Calgary snooker league made for a great time. I think I would honestly be surprised if a year or two ago if someone said I’d be traveling across Vietnam with a pack of 7 Canadians. While it seems like there is an abundance of us here from ... read more

January 20th 2007

Well it's official, Vietnam is quickly climbing the list of my favorite countries in the world on a seemingly daily basis. The food, though not as popular where I come from compared to it's other Asian counterparts is something that I've grown accustomed to and enjoy more than ever. The soups, vegetables and coconut milk I intake everyday are making me feel refreshed, strong and simply put -good. At this point I can share similar words about the trip in general. After a few days in Saigon our pack of travel goers ventured south into the liquid like lands of South Vietnam's heart and soul -the Mekong Delta. Buses and ferries took us into the very important wetlands that seem to fuel nearly 40 million people along the coast of the South China sea. The fishing ... read more
