On Wednesday morning at 8am Noel, the Irish lads and I commenced our three day trip into Bolivia, via the Southwestern Circuit. The trip included transport, all food and 2 nights accomodation. We checked out of Chile in San Pedro and then drove through the desert for an hour until we got to the Bolivian customs office. (Which country we were officialy in for the hour between checking out of Chile and into Bolivia we do not know!) The scenery was out of this world with the Andes and several volcanoes looming oin the distance. Once in Bolivia we had a simple breakfast of bread and Jam and then transferred our luggage from a minibus onto a 4X4. In our car with us were the Irish lads, a french couple and our Bolivian driver/chef/guide Severano. We ... read more

Well we arrived today via a night bus from Santa Cruz, leaving last night at 6:30 and arriving this morning at about 10:00AM. The ride was long, but we splurged for a really good bus and were certainly happy with that decision. I slept fairly well all things considered, and for once, but hopefully not for the last time, I had some excellent leg room. La Paz is awesome so far, it´s nestled in a valley at 3660m above sea level and has some true character. The roads are small and sidewalkless and we found a nice little hostel with a room all to ourselves that even has a little balcony over the street. Today we tried to finalize our Brazil VISA applications but found a small hitch, which if you read Jord´s blog can understand ... read more

Back in Puno, we bumped into a few fellow backpackers we had met en route and decided to celebrate the occasion with a slap up meal and some pisco sours (local drink). 'Slap up' in Peruvian terms means a 'hefty' food bill of 35 Soles each! this equates to six pounds back home!! It was nice to see familiar faces again. So it was a 'muy triste adios' to Peru, the land of the Incas after our six week stint. We loved the country and what it had to offer; the hospitable people, the ma-husive and very impressive Andes, the never-ending deserts, the ancient ruins and sacred valleys, the pre-Inca sites, and not forgeting of course our time with Bruce Peru. But once again it was time to groove on. South America is a huge continent ... read more

Com falta ... read more

Well, when we went to book the tickets to Cartegana, the flight for the next day had already sold out, and the next one that had room did not leave until Sunday. On top of that, the price for 189 was only for one way, and well apparently Columbia requires visitors from Canada and the United States to have a return ticket prior to entering. We might have chanced it were we going to Columbia (after all Costa Rica has the same requirement but did not check), but we wanted to get into South America ASAP. There were no flights to Lima on the day we wanted to leave, and flights to Quito and La Paz were pretty expensive considering. Anyway, the lady mentioned Santa Cruz, a city that is in Bolivia as it turns out. ... read more

Well, South America here we are. Jordan and Ryan have both updated their blogs here so you´re probably already aware of our current location and how we came to arrive here. I´ll just say that I was dissapointed I´m not in Columbia today... but the trip isn´t over yet. The trip here was a dizzying experience, we spent most of Friday in the hostel waiting for the events of Ryan´s Camera theft to play out, and then we skipped off to the airport only to wait hours and hours for our flight. We determined it was financially prudent to spend the night sleeping in an airport lounge instead of paying for a hostel, which was a good idea in the end. However I really didn´t sleep at all, I did doze a few times in the ... read more

Had a free day back in Cusco to recover from the Inca trail, which involved a huge breakfast at Jack's cafe (great veggie options) and an hour long massage in the afternoon - fab! Then we all met up at a place where they provide traditional Peruvian costumes and you pay a small fee to take lots of comedy photos.... I think the photos speak for themselves - it was a bit of a worry how many of the blokes made a beeline for the women's costumes!! Long truck day next arriving in Puno late afternoon. Finger puppets seem to be the thing here, there are kds selling them everywhere! Only 1 sol, so I got a santa and a sheep (as part of my secret santa gift to a New Zealand guy in the group!). ... read more

Thank the Good Lord for two wonderfully laid-back Peace Corps Bolivia Volunteers, Rebecca and Lauren. I was in southwest Bolivia with no plans for the Holidays. In order to make sure I didn't spend Christmas alone reading The DaVinci Code in some dark musty hostel, I invited myself to little Peace Corps Christmas party in Tarija, Bolivia. I didn't know Rebecca or Lauren, but I decided the PC bond would make up for any deficiences in our nonexistant relationship. They welcomed me warmly and even gave me the guest bedroom on the roof with wonderful view of the town. I made myself at home.....and then decided to stay for 8 days. Tarija has little to do for an itinerant gringo. It was perfect. I ate saltenas, drank coffee, and sat in the park. I had no ... read more

Made it to Villa Tunari and the Inti Wara Yassi wildlife refuge about a week ago. Have spent most of my days at work and most of my nights socializing, which , for everyone that knows me, is a big surprise! Made it through the christmas eve and christmas day parties, just new year´s to go now. Most of my pics from here are bound to be of my kitty-kat Quirqui. His level of activity (i.e. none) fits in very well with my schedule, although I occasionally feel guilty about falling asleep on the job - but I can hardly blame that entirely on Quirqui, as I average about 30minutes sleep per night at the moment - must try to cut back on the partying.... read more
