The bus to La paz was due to leave Potsoi at 8.30pm, we arrived at 7.30pm and got a drink. There was still no bus at 8.45 so we were getting a bity panicky. At 9.00pm the bus turned up and we were informed we would need to check our bags in at the office upstairs before boarding. After a mad dash and watching to make sure our bags got on the bus, we boarded. In the centre console of the drivers compartment, I noticed a big bag of coca leaves - at least we knew the driver wouldn´t fall asleep at the wheel! The journey was scheduled to take 11 hours but at what seemed like 100mph it only took 9. I slept most of the journey but Tas didnt as she thought the driver ... read more

Well since heading back to La Paz, we jumped on a bus south, headed to Oruro, twas a three hour bus ride where Jord and I were constantly getting weird stares because we couldnt stop laughing to Eddy Murphy on my iPod, then "Standing Tall" came on and we gave a cheer to the Ennis brothers (stuntmen) who we found out were in the film. Arrived in Oruro where we hit up Celebrity Chef Don Roberto, who invited us to his parents hotel in Cochabamba, and mayhaps on our way back to Santa Cruz we will stop by. As Jords blog noted he was really an amazing guy. If I could find a computer with windows XP I could post the pictures of our meal, this guy brought us the most delicious lamb Ive ever had ... read more
The Feast

Our departure from Sucre was delayed due to a local bus driver's strike. They were protesting against the mayor's refusal to close a bridge which was in danger of collapsing. The next day we boarded our bus safe in the knowledge that our bus was to take a different route. We insisted on our packs being stored in the hold as heavy rain was inevitable during our 10 hour (ish) journey. This proved not to be the most sensible idea, as heavy rain had caused flood rivers to wash away the roads and much of our route was covered in water. However, this did not perturb our driver who confidently plowed straight through causing the water to enter the hold and consequently our backpacks. What joy! We decided not to get too stressed about this, it ... read more

Well by now I am sure most of you have read Jason´s last update on our dance with death. While I would like to say that he was exagerating, he wasn´t. In fact he may have even been underestimating the risks on that road. For some reason the vehicles going down hill get the worst of it: they are always on the outside, and if vehicles can´t get past each other, the driver going downhill has to go in reverse. I felt bad for the drivers of the dump trucks that were coming down when we were going up. I don´t know how they stayed on the road. Hell, when we were going down we almost backed ourselves right off the cliff.... After going through waterfalls and rivers we came around a corner to be face ... read more

The bus to Potosi from Uyuni was a nightmare. No toilets and I had stocked up on water expecting them - I was very grateful for the first stop after 3.5 hours. The driver was driving like a madman, swerving around llamas which were in the road - llamas are all over the Andes - farmed like cattle in the UK but without the boundries of fields. We had bought a newspaper the previous day and there was a story about a drunken bus driver who had crashed his bus killing 6 of the passengers and injuring many more. Apparently this is not uncommon in Bolivia. This story fresh in our minds and the steep mountain roads did not calm our nerves. We safely arrived at Potosi at 4pm and kissed Pachamama. Pachamama is mother earth ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Coroico January 17th 2006

Well, with several days more in Coroica, things started off slowly. We found an awesome place to stay (which I mentioned in the previous blog) but for quite some time we just sat around talking about what to do with our remaining 4 days before dying on our return back up death road. Statistically one person dies on the road every four days, so we tried to play the odds and head back in daylight, not on the weekend, and in a small bus not a large one (if you saw the road caving away under a small bus you´d understand). Regardless of all that, I´m done talking about death road, but certainly not done thinking about it. Last Saturday we went to the ranch in town, got some horses, road to the cocaine fields, visited ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre January 15th 2006

The bus we took from La Paz was heavily over booked which resulted in those who booked/arrived late having to sit and sleep in the aisle. Fortunately for us we arrived early (for once) and settled into our assigned seats for the overnight 14 hour journey. The driver's assistant had a penchant for very loud, violent films and en route to Sucre, he played three, all at 'old people´s' volume! seemingly unaware of the passengers disinterest and discomfort. The 20 minutes of white noise that followed each film was particulary mind-numbing and nearly drove us to dispair. All S.American bus journeys we have experienced so far end up taking much longer than planned and this was no exception. Some 18 hours later we bumbled into Sucre. Sucre was the original capital of Bolivia and was where ... read more

Dino trip

It appears that I have arrived in the midst of a mosquito epidemic, far beyond those of normal years. They drive you nearly insane on a daily basis - the whining noise, the abundant itchy bites, the disfiguration of your entire body, the threat of malaria .... need I go on? I´ll never complain about being bitten by bugs in Australia ever again, there´s nothing that compares to this! The most fun part (not) is that we can´t wear insect repellent around the animals in case they lick us and make themselves sick. I kind of pooh-poohed this at first until I saw how my puma Gato responds to things with strong smells. He rubs his face all over the area and drools profusely, and there´s very few things in this world more disgusting than being ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Coroico January 12th 2006

Well we left La Paz yesterday, we took a quick bus out of town to the place where we can get microbuses (basically a van) to the town of Coroico. Coroico is not has high elevation wise as La Paz, which was nice, but to get there one heads north east through the mountains. The trip started off pleasant enough, we climbed upward, I had a bit of a buggered stomache so I took a gravol. We saw llama´s and farms and even some snow! After awhile we started back down, into the jungle, clouds and rain and slippery mountain roads. Now, I saw pictures of this "highway" before leaving, it´s actually a popular mountain biking excursion, and judging from the shots I saw in La Paz, it looked like a narrow, wet, deadly road through ... read more
