English We have noticed that the number of comments and visits to this blog is decreasing. Hence, this time we have decided to amaze you with the best landscapes and probably the pictures of our trip. The southwest part of Bolivia is simply out of this world. Last time we wrote we were in Tupiza waiting for somebody to join us for the famous 4 days jeep tour to the Salar de Uyuni. We had to wait two days... but at the end we found two amazing fellows, Seraphin and Antonella. Probably the most original guys we have met so far. Two mystical germans, the first ones who put forward an alternative way of travelling independently. Instead of relying on the Lonely Planet (or on similar guides), their trip was based on a different book: the ... read more

Today we went to the salt flats they were so.. white. Its a lake with alternate layers of salt and water. As it had been raining too there was some water on top. It was so surreal that places exist like this, just loads and loads of salt. It was so bright and the sky was so blue it was really fantastic. The world looks great in white and blue. We went to a hotel made only of salt, it was really strange. never imagined being in a building made of salt! What an amazing day... ... read more

We entered Bolivia on the 3rd of March from San Pedro on a 4x4. the road into Bolivia from Chile is a dirt track the road to Argentina however, it tarmac! We climbed up to an altidude to over 4000m. I was in a jeep with 3 people from Austria and 2 people from Switzerland, all German speaking.. but they kindly spoke in English so I could understand. (Apart from the driver who was from Bolivia). The first place we stopped was Laguna Blanco - the white lake, white because of borax, it was stunning.. It was silvery and had loads of flamingos. The next lake was Laguna Verde, we were here for about 1 hour and in that time the lake changed from being green and transparent to become green/touquise and opaque. I couldnt believe ... read more

We are putting together a web page to be able to show you some of the movies we are taking along the way. It's still "under construccion" but we thought you might like a sneak preview... To see some funny movies related to this blog, click here (sorry mum!) POTOSI Arriving in Potosí, the first thing you notice is how cool it is, even at mid-day. The second thing you quickly notice is how easily you become short of breath, just walking at an easy pace around town feels like you're jogging around. Both of these effects are of course caused by Potosí's high altitude. At 3,967m (13,000 feet) above sea level, it is the second highest city in the world. At such altitude, there is only around 58% of the oxygen that you would have ... read more

English We are now in Bolivia! We arrived here by crossing the border with Argentina from La Quiaca. Visiting La Quiaca, the northest part of Argentina, is one of the cool (or maybe silly?) things that one could do together with visiting the southern most part of Argentina, Ushuaia (more than 5000 km far south). Argentinian buses do not dare to cross the border and have problems through the bad gravel roads of Bolivia, so they left us before the border just to say 'And now on foot!'. So we grabbed our backpacks and started to walk for about one km to cross the border (after having our last argentinan milanesa con papas fritas of course...). It was a bit hard since we were at 3500 meters of altitude and with so much weight you can ... read more

not sure if you are viewing the maps at all, but this one's worth having a look at! Click on the link and read the comment at the bottom See movies asssociated with this blog here As we mentioned in our last page, we had decided to cross into Bolivia in a 4x4, a trip lasting 3 days and 2 nights and which promised to be both interesting and a lot of fun. We went with a company called "Estrella del Sur" which was the only one in town taking the traditional route, i.e. crossing the Salt Flat despite the fact that it was 80% under water. The other companies were not taking the risk, meaning they would be spending the second night in Uyuni instead of in the Salt Hotel, which we thought sounded like ... read more

Day 1 Highlights: Left Uyuni, the nearest town to the Salar, in our fleet of jeeps, and made our way to the salt factory, and met the owner and his 8-year-old daughter who worked all day filling up salt bags. For this she would earn the equivalent of a pound. Next we headed to the Salt Flats. They are dazzling! Pure white ground as far as the eye can see, it's hard to open your eyes without sunglasses. I didn't have any so I bought a pair at the Salt Hotel, and they lasted a whole day before the lens fell out! We took the mandatory cheesy photos (holding someone in your hand that's actually very far away) but they didn't really come out. The Salt Hotel was amazing though, built entirely of the salty stuff, ... read more

We're back!! Let us try and fill you in quickly with what we've done in the past week: Today we arrived in Potosi, the world's highest town at 4070m! We weren't here long but just enough time to visit the famous silver mines on which the people here prospered for years. As you can imagine, the mines are dark and damp, and pretty claustrophobic if you stay too long. The miners work long hours though, earning about 3 pounds a day for what is hard and monotonous work. As part of the tour we bought them all a bag of presents, consisting of: 2 packets of biscuits - to munch on A bag of cocoa leaves - chewing on these helps ward off hunger, cold, pain and altitude sickness A stick of dynamite - just to ... read more

Yes, it´s taken a while, but I have some photos of the salt flats of southern Bolivia. It had rained shortly before we went there, so it was impossible to take the usual white glare/blue sky photos that seem to abound. However, I think I got the better of the deal, as the salar was then turned into an enormous mirror. The water was only a few inches deep above the white salt, so the reflections were perfect; so much so that my eyes had trouble discerning where the sky ended and the horizon began.... read more
