Days 26 & 27 We headed off in 4x4 s to Solar de Uyuni - 12000 square kms of pure salt! It was amazing. Pure white salt against bright blue skies for as far as you could see. It used to be a lagoon but the water dried up so it's just salt that's left. It looked like ice. We stopped at a salt hotel where everything is made of salt - including the furniture and then stopped at a random island for lunch. We had an explore of the island (which is called Fish Island) which had plenty of cactus and lots of rocks. We headed to our 'hotel'which was in the middle of nowhere. Stuart played football with a couple of the guys and a couple of local lads then we chilled out. ... read more

Day 23 We arrived in Potosi midday and had a wander round. We are something like 3600 m above sea level so it's really hard to walk uphill as your heart is beating so fast due to the altitude! We had lunch and then went for a tour around the mint museum. Day 24 We were picked up in the morning for our trip to the mine. Basically Potosi is a mining town where the miners pay the government to work in the mine and whatever they find is theirs. The mine used to be rich in silver, but now it is other minerals they look for. We stopped off at the market to buy the miners some presents and headed to the mine. Firstly our tour guide showed us how the miners use dynamite to ... read more

Naja, ... read more

We have just completed the 4x4 Salar trip from San Pedro to Uyuni in Bolivia and it certainly lived up to the very high expectations we had from numerous recommendations. Our journey started early in San Pedro but shortly after starting we came to an abrupt halt at the Chilean exit point with a long queue to get out of Chile (we didn´t think it so bad that people would queue to leave...). Once we finally got our passports stamped it was back into the bus for the hour journey to the Bolivian entry point. At over 4300m this border control was little more than a shed with a flag flying outside. We paid the entry fee which we are told is necessary but a complete scam to extract money from tourists - scam or not ... read more

Now I diffently couldn´t leave Bolivia with running around in the Land of Butch Cassidy and good old Sundance. So I arrived in Tupiza with the plan to follow there last few fateful days. Tupiza is the site of the bank they intended to rob. Now it is just a sleepy little town with tourists going to the salar, or here for what I am.... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni November 23rd 2005

Leaving Potosi we travelled South West to the border with Chile and after meeting up with a Dutch lawyer and an English couple, we continued the gringo trail with them across the Salar de Uyuni and into Chile by 20 year old Toyota Land Cruiser. (That´s a 4x4 for the ignorant amongst you...and for the girls, a blue car!!). The Salar De Uyuni is the highest slat flats in the world (there is a pattern developing in this Blog in terms of altitude!). It is a bizarre landscape which looks like you are driving on snow, however the "snow" is dotted with desert islands covered in Cacti. Pretty impressive. You can also eat it, which is always a bonus, but I think the eskimo rule regarding yellow snow similarly applies here! On the Chile side of ... read more

We caught the 10am bus on 20th November from Uyuni to Potosi which as the norm with Bolivian buses was over subscribed. We had reserved seats which were unfortunately on the second row from the front of the bus. I had someone sat on the arm rest of my seat for three hours of the journey and a womans big ass wedged in the aisle near to my leg and whenever someone needed to pass she just sat on my knee without prior warning. At least we had seats unlike many who were crammed into the aisle, swaying from side to side and up and down as the bus negotiated the twist, turns and bumps in the road. I am not a good bus passanger at the best of times but on a bus with an erratic ... read more

Leaving La Paz by early (again) morning bus, we changed at Oruro on to a Train. Despite facing backwards, there was amazing views of the barren landscape as we headed south to the town of Uyuni. The train stopped breifly and the lights went out for an unexplained rason, but after 7hours of trundling along, we arrived in Uyuni late at night and were relieved to see our bags had been checked on correctly and arrived there with us. Met off the train by our lady host, we checked into the hostel for our last decent nights sleep before the tour, as we'd been warned the accommodation would be 'basic' at best. In the morning, we met our fellow travellers, Alex, Dimitri & his wife, and Leo. Our driver/basic guide was called Primo and we also ... read more

Rick provids the intro, whilst Becky has written the longer more boring stuff! Hola from Rick: Again thanks for all your comments on the previous blog, and yes the sights and sounds of south america are nothing on the joys of spotting a burberry cap and a silky shell suit flash past in a souped up escort xri with the sweet sound of loud bassy R&B. Well everything we have done recently has been at the highest in the world. Highest and largest navicable lakein the world (surely all lakes are navicable?), Lake Titicaca (fnar fnar), highest capital city in the world (La Paz), played the highest golf course in the world and maybe most expensive relative to the Bolivian GDP, where I was particulary rubbish (maybe due to a rather large drinking event the night ... read more

STOP PRESS: You might just find Sally´s comments on the last entry amusing !! Sal: Not sure you realised the whole world can read it... This is the story of how Steve and Lou travelled across the Bolivian mountains in a 4x4 with a driver, a cook a guide, a Columbian teacher from Canada, an Interpol policeman from Switzerland and two Nuns from Ecuador !! Chuckle.... So, one of the main reasons we wanted to come to South America was to see the world´s largest salt flat, high up in the Bolivian mountains...and boy was it worth it. Luckily we are writing this blog a week or so later, or else it would be full of superlatives from start to end. Our adventure started by booking a tour in Potosi..which was a bit of a gamble, ... read more
