The German, the English couple, and I arrived in Potosi at 2 in the morning after a bus trip that rattled my daggs for 7 straight hours. By golly, it was certainly bumpy! Then some friendly local told us out hotel was only three blocks up the hill from where we were, so we decided against a taxi and started walking. Now, this is with my 30kg pack on, up hill, at 4200 meters above sea level. After 3 blocks I was exhausted. But our hotel isn´t here, but another 13 blocks up a hill as steep as the top part of Queen st (where the Oriental shops are), and I can tell you, I wanted to die by the time we arrived at our hotel, Hotel San Marcos. Saint Mark - not a bad name, ... read more

Arrived in Uyuni early in the morning. The bus trip was relatively relaxing and I slept OK. I now had time to kill before my three day tour began. Uyuni is a railway junction in the middle of the deserts of SW Bolivia. The railways have declined in use, but now the town does a trade in taking tourists to see the incredible scenery nearby. I walked just outside the town in the “Train Cemetery’ where I got some nice photographs of old trains and carriages that have been dumped here. At about 11, we left on our tour. The first day was the incredible Salar de Uyuni. This is the world’s largest salt flat and is a huge expanse of white salt. Quite an incredible place! You just drive and drive and drive over this ... read more

Well, I was going to take the train to Bolivia, to Uyuni, as it was something a little different to what every one else was doing, but everyone kept on recommending to go via the Salar, so I gave in and followed the pack. And I am quite glad I did. I had heard it was cheaper to go to Bolivia and organize a trip from there, but now only Bolivian companies work the route, so it´s the same either way. So I left early Tuesday morning with a crew called Estrella de Sur, for Bolivia. There was a German, Two Israelis, and two English in the same jeep, for which I got translation duties. The trip took three days and went through some of the most spectacular vistas that I have ever seen. We left ... read more

Well, I've seen a whole lot of llamas and cactus' since i last wrote... sorry it's been a while. I'll resume the update of my adventures just after Puerto Iguazu, where my fabulous idea of a stopover in Tucuman to avoid a late-night arrival in Salta, was not so fabulous. Tucuman was a bit of a 'hole'. The only redeeming feature being my chance to watch the crowning of 'Miss Independencia 2005'. A thoroughly amusing event thanks to the 'interesting' fashion the hopefuls were sporting. I made a pretty hasty exit from Tucuman and arrived in Salta 4 hours later. Salta was a nice place, with lots to see and do. I took a day-trip from there, around some incredible hills that were all the pretty colours of the rainbow, and then on to see some ... read more

Firstly, the CD player and CDs were great, but the batteries ran out after two album´s worth. I was barely out of La Paz! I just don´t understand. They say very clearly that they are "Panasonic Super Hyper". Panasonic are a good brand, right, and "Super Hyper" sounds like loads of power? And such a good deal at 30 pence for four. (The other two were in the hold of the bus, inaccessible.) Luckily, we changed at Oruru so I bought 12 more batteries. This is OK, as yes they´re very cheap, but I´d rather not have to carry around an extra bag for my electricity supply. Now, I´m trying to conserve power by holding the CD player out in front of me so I don´t have to turn the antishock on. I look like a ... read more

Ok, so, weve missed our bus to Uyuni (the main town for visitng the saly lakes) but theres another one at 6pm so weve got the whole day to kill. After missing the bus we tried to arrange a collectivo to take us becasue the bus doesnt arrive at Uyuni until about 1am, which isnt the best plan. However after having had many locals laugh at my spanish I mangaged to find out that no taxis or collectivos would go to Uyuni because it is all blockaded!! How dare Bolivia have a revolution when I want to visit the Lakes! I asked again if the bus would be ok and the guy said that at that time of night the blockades should be open. So im sure it will be fine! The plan is to visit ... read more

So Potosi is a really nice little town nestled in the mountainside next to a huge silver mine. Our hostel was vile and very very cold (no such thing as central heating here) I wore two pairs of trousers, 3 tshirts, a jumper, my silk sleeping bag liner, my sleeping bag and the covers from the bed and i still couldnt get warm. I think i may invest in some bolivian thermals! We only had a day here so decided to visit the Silver Mine in the morning and then go to some natural hot springs in the afternoon. We managed to haggle a bit and got both tours for about 5gbp each! The mine was brilliant, although Naomi and Laura didnt enjoy it. First of all we had to put on all the safety gear, ... read more
