Well Wednesday morning we hopped onto some horses and rode out into the Bolivian mountains just outside of Tupiza. This horseback trip was quite something. Having more confidence after riding in Coroico, they gave me their biggest and fastest horse (although he doesnt like to run) and the three of us set off with our guide. About an hour in our guide said "rapido?" and we agreed. Trot to canter I just about fell off, having only cantered once before in my life I was totally unprepared, fortunetaly I settled things and got my balance and it was all good from there. Oh yeah that is until we got to the town we were staying at and came running in on our horses when the guide stopped everyone suddently (probably because we were in a town?) ... read more

We´re now in southern Bolivia, not far from the Argentine border, which we plan to cross in a day or two. The main idea is to avoid spending too long in Chile, which is expensive. Mind you, anywhere is expensive compared with Bolivia. Our nicest trip in Peru was in the company of the splendid Revels family from San Diego. We travelled to the Manu rainforest, reached after a day jolting along potholed roads and another day puttering upriver in a small boat. It was expensive and uncomfortable, but our powers of endurance were rewarded by the wildlife we saw - red howler monkeys grooming themselves in the trees, black spider monkeys crashing through the branches overhead, and most memorably a family of giant river otters. We got close enough to hear the fish bones crunching ... read more

Our tour across what felt like the entire country of Boliva was heartwarming and to be cherished forever. The salt flats were stunning, and our time in a multitude of Mos Eisley style towns were wonderful. Expecting to see two moons and moisture farms, we instead found llamas, llamas, and more llamas. Oh yes, and flamingos! The reality is that this trip is hard to describe, frankly Bolivia seems to be the most diverse country in terms of opposing landscapes (at least for its size) that only pictures can do it justice. Salt flats, deserts, jungle (although that was when we were north last week) and everything in between makes it simply amazing to traverse (especially in a 4X4 in the back country, during the daytime). Im going to keep this short for now in an ... read more

Well since heading back to La Paz, we jumped on a bus south, headed to Oruro, twas a three hour bus ride where Jord and I were constantly getting weird stares because we couldnt stop laughing to Eddy Murphy on my iPod, then "Standing Tall" came on and we gave a cheer to the Ennis brothers (stuntmen) who we found out were in the film. Arrived in Oruro where we hit up Celebrity Chef Don Roberto, who invited us to his parents hotel in Cochabamba, and mayhaps on our way back to Santa Cruz we will stop by. As Jords blog noted he was really an amazing guy. If I could find a computer with windows XP I could post the pictures of our meal, this guy brought us the most delicious lamb Ive ever had ... read more

Our departure from Sucre was delayed due to a local bus driver's strike. They were protesting against the mayor's refusal to close a bridge which was in danger of collapsing. The next day we boarded our bus safe in the knowledge that our bus was to take a different route. We insisted on our packs being stored in the hold as heavy rain was inevitable during our 10 hour (ish) journey. This proved not to be the most sensible idea, as heavy rain had caused flood rivers to wash away the roads and much of our route was covered in water. However, this did not perturb our driver who confidently plowed straight through causing the water to enter the hold and consequently our backpacks. What joy! We decided not to get too stressed about this, it ... read more

The bus to Potosi from Uyuni was a nightmare. No toilets and I had stocked up on water expecting them - I was very grateful for the first stop after 3.5 hours. The driver was driving like a madman, swerving around llamas which were in the road - llamas are all over the Andes - farmed like cattle in the UK but without the boundries of fields. We had bought a newspaper the previous day and there was a story about a drunken bus driver who had crashed his bus killing 6 of the passengers and injuring many more. Apparently this is not uncommon in Bolivia. This story fresh in our minds and the steep mountain roads did not calm our nerves. We safely arrived at Potosi at 4pm and kissed Pachamama. Pachamama is mother earth ... read more

On Wednesday morning at 8am Noel, the Irish lads and I commenced our three day trip into Bolivia, via the Southwestern Circuit. The trip included transport, all food and 2 nights accomodation. We checked out of Chile in San Pedro and then drove through the desert for an hour until we got to the Bolivian customs office. (Which country we were officialy in for the hour between checking out of Chile and into Bolivia we do not know!) The scenery was out of this world with the Andes and several volcanoes looming oin the distance. Once in Bolivia we had a simple breakfast of bread and Jam and then transferred our luggage from a minibus onto a 4X4. In our car with us were the Irish lads, a french couple and our Bolivian driver/chef/guide Severano. We ... read more

Had a free day back in Cusco to recover from the Inca trail, which involved a huge breakfast at Jack's cafe (great veggie options) and an hour long massage in the afternoon - fab! Then we all met up at a place where they provide traditional Peruvian costumes and you pay a small fee to take lots of comedy photos.... I think the photos speak for themselves - it was a bit of a worry how many of the blokes made a beeline for the women's costumes!! Long truck day next arriving in Puno late afternoon. Finger puppets seem to be the thing here, there are kds selling them everywhere! Only 1 sol, so I got a santa and a sheep (as part of my secret santa gift to a New Zealand guy in the group!). ... read more

Getting to Uyuni Its Saturday the day before the Bolivian National Election and a massive exodus takes place from my hostel in La Paz. Mid morning and chatting with the in-house tourist guy I find the last buses south to Uyuni are at midday not the evening as I thought. shit. Luckily the guy manages to book me onto one of the last buses leaving. I throw everything into my bag and dash to the bus station. For the election the entire country is being shutdown, nobody is allowed to travel or sell alcohol during the 24 hours of the election day. On the bus I get chatting to a couple of wacky Canadians who are upping sticks planning to buy land in Argentina build a shack and grow vegetables. They´ve arranged a tour of the ... read more
