Despite travelling pretty much the length (north to south) of Bolivia in the last couple of weeks, we are neglecting to do blog entries for the cities of Cochabamba and Sucre... Basically these were ok cities to spend a day or 2 but we dont have many great photos or amusing stories so we are going to spare you the mundane details of the 2 generic cities! We left La Paz on the 14th April and headed 7hours south to Cochabamba, Bolivia´s second (or third depending on which book you read) city. Upon arrival at Coch (as well-seasoned travellers call it) we found an eerie scene of abandoned taxis and busses, which meant walking with the unnecessarily large bags to find a hotel at dusk. We later found out that it wasn´t armageddon, but of course ... read more

Cold, stiff and sweaty, we arrived in the ghost town of Uyuni having successfully survived "The 900km Crossing" No-one felt like a further 6 hour car journey but there was little debating as we felt we should spend Easter somewhere special. Our jeep collected us with one vital component missing..petrol. On a little bit of faith, syphoning from another vehicle and frequent engine checks, we were able to top up at a nearby village To reward us for our tenacity, we arrived in Tupiza and booked into our most extravagant hotel thus far. For $3 a night we were blessed with a private bathroom and SWIMMING POOL. As all the shops and restaurants were closed for easter sunday, I was sure we were doomed to a lunch of cocoa leaves and stale chocolate. Unexpectatedly though, everyone ... read more

We are now in Bolivia, done so much since I last posted not sure where to start! From Valparaiso we went to Vicxuna the observatory capital of CHile to do some star gazing! The observatory tour we went on was great and really interesting, nearly all the stars are different here because its in a different hemisphere, but you can still see the star signs and Orion. We looked through the telescopes at some open and closed clusters and at Jupiter and Saturn (which was gret you could see the rings) and then at the surface of the moon. From Vicuna we went to La Serena, another coast resort and spent a couple more days chilling on the beach. Then we had a horrific 17hr bus journey to San Pedro in the Atacama Desert. Jamie got ... read more

We only stayed in Salta for two nights and then made our way over the Bolivian border (via some Argentinian roadblocks by protesting national unionist members) to Tupiza, 3000 m above sea level. Not only was this a different country, it was a different world. Being in Chile and Argentina had fooled me, going to Bolivia was like stepping back in time but with funny anachronistic touches such as the fake English Premiership football shirts and trainers for sale in the various markets I have seen so far. I thought San Pedro de Atacama was dusty, but Bolivia takes the biscuit!! First stop in Bolivia was Tupiza, close to where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were eventually cornered and killed. After an overnight here we travelled onto Potosi, an eye watering 4200 m above sea ... read more

Hola all Well I finally made it to Bolivia for a brief visit on my way back to Lima. I left Salta Argentina on the night bus to the Bolivia Border with a friend I met In Argentina. we got to the border town at 4 am and the border was some where not even close to the border. I managed to get dirrections from a local on how to get there. the selection of locals at this time was limited, spanish sounds even harder to understand when thee are no teeth involved. We made it to customs just before they opened and met another guy there waiting to cross. after the customs there you have to walk across a bridge into Bolivia. their Border opens at 6 am but there is an hour time difference ... read more

Another dodgy bus journey (6hrs timetabled, 7.5hrs actual, 3 breakdowns - thankfully not the brakes) took us from sleepy Uyuni to the city of Potosi. Potosi is apparently the highest city (of its size) in the world - at some 4km - , and when we turned the last bend on the bus and the city appeared it was quite a sight. Nestled at the foot of Cerro Rico, the source of the city´s historical wealth, the city looks lovely. We´d been briefed in advance about hassle at the bus station, so we grabbed our bags close to us and shuffled away as fast as we could..not actually knowing where we were heading. We had a hostel in mind but the map we had was somewhat vague. The altitude, the sun and the steep hills soon ... read more

We eventually escaped the evil clutches of the bus strike - they were striking because they were being asked to pay 80 Bolivianos (6 GBPounds) tax a year - and headed overnight to Sucre, Bolivia's second capital. White-painted, red-roofed colonial buildings and numerous historical sights abound, but the main draw was... the Dino Truck! We were a little sceptical of this gringo-magnet, complete with pictures of dinosaurs on the side, but the guidebook told us to leave our scepticism aside - so we did just that. The truck drives (cue kids running down the street yelling "gringo!") up to a limestone quarry. Several million years ago, the area was a lake bed; after some tectonic upheav.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! and a bit of mining, a 200m high mudrock wall stands, covered in dinosaur footprints. Very impressive. The footprints prove ... read more

Hi guys last time i left you i had just come across the salar and was heading to potosi. (Of course most of you will know that this is being written well behind schedule and i have spent 6 weeks in the jungle with a big cat since then, however suspend your disbelief and read on. Death defying jaguar stories will follow at some point!!!) The journey to potosi must have been one of the worst bus trips of my life, having been treated to the superb buses of Argentina and the reasonable buses of patagonia and chile i was now heading for the bus graveyard that is bolivia. The 5 hour bus journey took 7 and a half due to the fact that all buses in bolivia inevitably break down. It was all above 4000m, ... read more
