Khamlu - Andrew Khamlu

Andrew Khamlu Welcome People!!

South America has always held a fascination for me since a very young age. The story of the rise and destruction of the Inca Empire, filled with its insatiable lust for riches and power, has stayed with me to this day.

I've travelled quite extensively, but this has to be my most eagerly anticipated trip. This is the fulfilment of a childhood dream. With those expectations in mind, will the real South America live up to the one held in my imagination...

So for the next two months I'll be making may way through the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of lands once ruled by the mighty Inca Empire.

Read and enjoy...

After another long bus trip and painfully negotiating the border crossing between Argentina and Chile, where there seems to be a complete lack of staff actually doing any work, we arrived in Puerto Natales. A rather forgetable town that's used as a launching pad for treks into Torres del Paine National Park. Nikki, the Canadian trolley dolly, and I planned on trekking together in Torres del Paine for four days. We conducted sacrifices and prostrated to the weather gods but they appeared to have ignored our pleas for good weather. Once again, it was pouring down with rain and bloody cold. [View Full Entry]

After a 5 hour bus ride, a short hop when taken in context of other bus journeys, we arrived into El Calafate, the newest town in Argentina. It's a frontier town at the foot of some spectacular mountains. Not that we could see any of them. Low clouds were blanketing out all but the closest hills and even they were partially obscured. The weather is peculiar in Patagonia. Different areas have their own microclimate so it’s impossible to predict what the weather will be like in any one place. I’d heard from other travelers that the weather had been atrocious here. [View Full Entry]

As I stared out the window there appeared an aqua-marine lake in the barren, hostile looking plains. This signified our approach to El Calafate airport. The drop in temperature was significant. No more walking around in a t-shirt and shorts, we were now in Patagonia. The landscape looked as wild and amazing as in the numerous photos I´d seen. I was so excited to be here. The pilot mentioned something about how we had arrived at a very special time which had something to do with the Perito Moreno Glacier. We just thought it was the usual tourist speil but found [View Full Entry]
