Fact Number 1: Cattle Ranches are called Stations in Oz. Our second day was a Crocodile Dundee Marathon. We'd got some serious K's to cover and so sat back through all 3 of the legendry films: That's not a knife. This is a knife! Paul Hogan Rules, although Croc Dundee 3 (in LA), was obviously a pile of crap, and it must have been face-life-city in the principles' dressing room, as they all had that permanently surprised look to them. I should just mention the sunsets that you get out here in the bush are unbelievable: amber, umber, scarlet, blue, purple - crazy colours! Fact number 2: Didgeridoos are made from branches hollowed out by Piping Termites! While catching a few z's though the many, many kilometers, I'd wake occasionally when our coach swerved to dodge ... read more

I had to prod the receptionist to return my key deposit to me when I checked out, which put another tick in the debit column for YHAs. Continuing south down Caves Road I passed yet more vineyards, including Voyager, which looked so beautiful that I had to stop and look around. The buildings had all been constructed in a whitewashed Dutch South African style which, with the blue sky and yellow/red foliage on the withering vines, was extremely easy on the eye. Next stop was Lake Cave, one of a series of caves in the Margaret River region. They had a 10% off deal for the public holiday, a refreshing change from many of the restaurants I'd seen that were slapping on an extra 10% for the same spurious reason. Naturally there were hordes of children ... read more

Leaving Blenheim Team NZ, that's Markus, Georgina and myself headed down the road to Picton. Our first adventure was to be the Queen Charlotte Track. A 2 day walking track running through the Marlborough Sounds. It was late autumn, winter approaching and the track apparently was boggy so we decided just an overnight stay and days trek. Packed plenty of Ham & Cheese and took the mid-morning water taxi to Torea Bay. Our plush hostel for the night, The Portage was only a short walk from the Torea jetty. A glorious day and with an avo to kill we rented a boat and set out exploring the Marlborough Sounds. The boat was about 12ft with a 2 stroke engine, none of us had ever done this before and surprisingly we made it onto the Sounds without ... read more

Hi Guys...............so alot has happened these last few weeks so sorry for the lack of contact......................................I've been racing up the East coast of Australia......... I wont tell you everything as too much really and would hate to bore you all.......... at the mo i'm at the airport too and internet is expensive- I've just missed 2 of my flights and have to wait 5hrs for the next so I have to pass the time some how- however expensive it might turn out to be!!!!!! After making the difficult decision to leave Brisbane and travel up the coast with the boys and Louisa (Vix's cousin) leaving Vix behind working we travelled up to Noosa, which is a beautiful little place but I was quite ill and ended up being in bed for the majority of the time ... read more

Following a few more days of drunkeness and cultures in Wellington (my favourite NZ city so far) - where I meet up with a few guys from the orchard, and even the owners - I finally made it across the Cook Strait to the South Island. The crossing is well known as being highly dangerous, but also beautiful as you enter into the Marlborough Sounds. This means 'fijords' for those of you as uniformed as I. Alas on the day I ventured across its was very safe, calm, and hoggy as hell! You could literally see nothing and we were amused instead by the captain calling us on deck to see the dolphins, and realising that the island is not really south but in fact west of the north! Getting the ferry across did fell like ... read more

So, I've finally slowed down a bit. It's been nice and relaxing. After a rough night out at a pub Saturday night, I ended up spending the day vegging on Sunday (after a short hike in the morning). My kangaroo eating experience was quite yummy. It's like a very gamey type of steak. Mmmm.... Today we started the day with a nice massage and then went for a hike to the Mt. Lofty summit...one of the highest points (if not THE highest point) in the Adelaide hills. So...now we're killing time until the restaurants re-open for dinner. It's weird...restaurants here close down at about 3:00 after lunch and then don't re-open until 5-6 for dinner. It's a little difficult when your working on a tourist's schedule (eat when you get around to it). So as for ... read more

We arrived in Hervey Bay, fresh off the plane from Sydney and were conspicuous from the start, overdressed in our jeans, fleeces and trainers, whilst the locals wandered round in board shorts and flip slops. The temperature was about 15 degrees warmer than it had been in Sydney, the sun was hot in the sky and it seemed strange to think that it is autumn/winter here. The shuttle bus took us through dry, arid and very flat landscape, now and again dotted with a few settlements. Nearer Bundaberg the landscape changed to green fields as far as the eye could see, mainly sugar cane farms. We were dropped off at Cellblock, the place we would call home for the next week or so, and found our room to be in a converted cell. Quite appropriate considering ... read more

The ferry to Fraser Island took about 40 minutes, it was early in the morning and I was very glad I brought my scarf! Another coincidence occurred with Sarah, a girl I'd been speaking to for ages on gapyear, was in fact on the same tour as me... Our vehicle was a monster, big beefy wheels to tackle the sand roads and bumps. It was like a ride at first, shaking us all over the place going down the tracks. Our first freshwater lake was Basin Lake. Twas far too cold to swim in but I did give my feet a little splish splash... After walking through Pile Valley and having a feast for lunch we went to Lake McKenzie to spend the rest of the afternoon. This lake is stunning, it really is, but of ... read more

So, to continue with my car dramas, lets just say that as the stereos broke so I can’t drown out the smell of the flooding carburettor. Whilst the car-savvy amongst you will know that these two faults aren’t necessarily connected, a good dose of Bon Scott’s finest would at least prevent me from nodding off whilst fighting the effects of inhaling full strength Caltex Super Octane at the traffic lights at the end of Ponsonby Road. In any case, if a didn’t have something to fix how else would I spend my weekends….well….. So, 3 weekends ago, I had booked to go down to Christchurch for my Birthday to see the Crusaders in the Super 14, this is never as easy as it sounds. I know that most, having never being to New Zealand imagine it ... read more
