Introduction Today's walk was a new one, for us anyway, but at an old favourite, Onkaparinga. It was Peter's choice, and because the need for serenity was high, it had to be Onkaparinga. It's like visiting the Flinders ranges, but without all the travel! For this walk we started out on George Driscoll's walk number 30 called "Got It All" but we changed it, as you will see. This walk would be suitable only for fit walkers with kids eight years and over as the rock hopping and gully climb are rather demanding. You can see other journal entries about Onkaparinga at url=http://www.travelblog.org/Australasia/Australia/South-Australia/Adelaide/Onkaparinga/blog-40664.html this link and this one too. G'day possums, hope you're all fair dimkum. Here's all our news from Sydney, Australia..... What other way is there to start a trip to Oz than with a good ol' family BBQ. No sooner had we walked through the front door of Auntie Rose's and Uncle Ken had the meat and prawns sizzlin' away. In true Italian/Australian style the whole family came to feast and we swapped stories with cousins Amanda, Anthony and Melissa until the last shrimp was gone. On our first day in the city we headed for the harbourside to check out the magnificent Harbour Bridge & Opera House. It was an awesome sight and inspired us to do the 3 hour Bridge Climb later in our stay. Check out the jumpsuits below...... There were also some beautiful beach areas around Sydney that ... read more

Day 56 - Sunday 28 May 2006 Port Hedland to Marble Bar (the hottest town in the country) Only 200 km’s to travel today. It was reasonably cool leaving Port Hedland this morning and cloudy. The sun has come out so nice for travelling. The scenery all around us is red dirt and mountains of green coverage. Cattle scattered through the bush and lots of long road trains coming back to Port Hedland. The road trains are mostly 4 trailers long. I can only recall passing one with the caravan on and I thought we were never going to make it. Well - Marble Bar what can I say. Very quiet and a bit like a ghost town and unusual people. The three people that we spoke to had only recently moved here and that was ... read more

This may not be the most objective, scientific or eloquent observation that I've ever made, but airlines suck! I realize that everyone has airline horror stories about being screwed over, but the Phelps name just seems to precipitate bad luck out of any airline experience. If a Phelps is traveling with you, meeting you, or is in any way, shape, or form connected with your travel plans, you're in trouble (just ask Jen R!) So it shouldn't be too surprising that I got an email on the morning of my flight telling me that my flight into Ghana was moved to Tuesday, giving me a 25 hour lay over in Dubai instead of a 2 hours, and saying that my return flight in August will now be returning to Perth at 1 a.m. on the 18th ... read more

This was our first weekend in Sydney. It's certain to be the first of many - for a start the shopping is not that great in Canberra! Sydney is about a three hour drive from Canberra along the Hume Highway. It's quite a scenic drive (the first time, at least!) - lots of countryside and trees (and more trees), the odd kangaroo and the huge (and completely dry) Lake George. For this first weekend we stayed in Coogee, in the Coogee Bay Hotel on the sea front. We walked the coast path from Coogee to Bondi Beach, strolled around circular quay and the CBD and, erm, bought shelves in Ikea. Perhaps some things never change...... read more

It's been a while! Landed in Australia well over a week ago and haven't had any spare time until now because we've been working for Conservation Volunteers Australia CVA. So we arrived in Aus 9 days ago on Friday 19th and straight away met up with CVA who very kindly gave us the weekend off!! So we took advantage of that on the Saturday by going into the town of Freemantle which is just outside Perth on the coast. It's a very nice seaside town, it has that seaside charm without the seaside tackiness that some places in England have. For example we visited Freemantle Market - now markets in England have greasy cafe's, buskers playing Bob Marley, cheap crap stalls and fruit and veg! The market in Freo has Cappucino stalls, buskers singing Oprea (!), ... read more

During my visit to Missouri I was able to learn about the differences in our healthcare systems. In the first instance our training to become a doctor is different. The majority of medical schools in Missouri offer a four year postgraduate degree course, with entry by examination. Although there is one six year undergraduate degree course offered in Kansas City, which is similar to our two medical schools. In the final year of medical school Missouri medical students must decide which area of medicine they wish to practice in and then apply for residencies. Residencies are generally a 3 year position within one field of medicine, for example surgery, or family medicine. Once they have completed their residency if they wish to sub-specialize they then do what is called a fellowship for 2 - 3 years. ... read more

So Siobhan and I set off from Auckland having known each other for about 90 mins but its all good she seems a nice girl and we get on and don’t have much of any drama with me map reading and Siobhan driving. So we pull into Matamata at 14:28 the tour guide is sat outside the booking office I am not sure what this tour is going to be like but anything to do with Lord of the Rings I am sold on so we get into the booking office quick as the next tour leaves at 14:30. Phew just made it. So we set off with JR who is a typical Kiwi bloke nice as pie and loving what he is doing, so he starts explaining about where the auditions took place, how people ... read more
