Last night was quite an experience: Beer after beer after beer was sunk as we laughed and chatted to the very local, (and very weird), locals from the pub we were staying in. By the end of the night the girls of the group had headed off to bed, much to the annoyance of the Landlord - Brent - who was pretty hammered and offered me and George a free case of beer, free t-shirts and free drinks all night if we woke the lovely French girl up and brought her down. How could we resist? Within 2 mins we were drunkenly banging on Delphine's dorm room and dragging her downstairs. I'm not sure if the reason for this rude awakening translated very well, and the poor girl looked rather confused, but never the less, we ... read more

I headed off in the direction of Coober Pedy in the glorious sun. It's now impossible to get lost or take a wrong turning as for the next 2000km it is one straight road, with the exception of Ayres Rock. This was the first day I truly experienced the 'outback'. Just a few minutes out of Port Augusta and the land opened up into a massive expanse of nothingness. Now and again the odd dead animal would break up the driving and I'd have to swerve to miss it, but other than that it was one very long drive. I stopped first of all at Hart Lake. Well it used to be a lake at some point in the past. It's now covered in salt. I walked a short distance onto the lake until I came ... read more

Well hello there. We have made it through our first few weeks in the land of kangaroos, didgeridoos and several thousand things intent on poisoning you, eating you or generally causing you a great deal of harm. The fact is that we haven't really come across any of them yet, apart from that strange bloke we met in Brisbane... Brisbane is a real nice city - worth a stop if its not too far out of your way, which I imagine it is for most of you at the moment. The first real stop we made in Oz was Hervey Bay for a trip over to Fraser Island. Its a 100Km long island on the East Coast made entirely of sand. Even the "mountains" are just giant sand dunes. Most of it is covered in Rainforest ... read more

A great couple of days! After leaving Home Hill and arriving here, I have spent the last 4 days swimming and snorkelling in the turquoise waters of Bowen. It is a relatively undiscovered town with great walks, scenery across to Gloucester Island (top of the Whitsundays) and of course fantastic beaches. There are also numerous coral and fish to be seen if you go snorkelling. The backpackers i'm staying at - Reefers by the Bay - is quite good, although i've yet to get some work and the dorms are a bit cramped. Perhaps the best thing about it is the promiximity to Queens Bay and Horseshoe Bay. Not sure what the future will bring but I anticipate another week here, depending on the sort of work I get and it comes. ... read more

Josh and I are now qualified open water scuba divers! We have a license to go 18 metres underwater, took us 4 days to get that bit of paper, and they were up there with the best days of our trip. The first 2 days were a little surreal, had to get up at 6.30 to get to school at 7.30, that was savage, and not what you expect to be doing on holiday... so all you back home having to do exams and revision... i felt a (very) little bit of your pain. The theory part basically involved learning what all the instruments did and how not to kill yourself while diving (the tutor, Mike's most commonly used phrase - in a dutch accent - was "don't do ______, or you will die"). Once all ... read more

Hi guys, I thought I better get updated again as my Mam and Dad have just visited us for a week and what a week it was. Those two kept us busy... after taking them on a tour of Melbourne we visited Philip Island for the Penguin Parade and the Great Ocean Road which were both absolutely amazing. The Penguin Parade is difficult to explain but put simply its a parade of 'Fairy' Penguins, each one no bigger than 30cm high and every night at sunset about 2000 of them make their way from the ocean to their homes. We got to sit (in the rain and freezing wind) and watch them waddle past. It is an amazing sight but you'll all have to imagine it as your not allowed to take pictures... Never mind. Anyway ... read more

Hi Everyone!! Well I'm pleased to say that my second week here went slightly better than the first so maybe things are on the increase! Monday, I played cards downstairs and met some new people and then I met some really nice girls on Tuesday with Liz (my roomate) in the kitchen. We went for a drink downstairs with them on Wednesday and then to some bars around here on Thursday, as it was their last night. It was really nice to meet some other girls who were a bit older and talk lots about girly things! Another girl moved into our room for a couple of nights as well, Nicola, and she was really nice. Martine, one of the girls, is going to be in Noosa for a while working, and I think I'm going ... read more

No, dont panic. Despite the title, this isnt news of a tax on suncream bankrupting the Ozzie economy, nor worries that swear boxes are to be introduced into Ozzie bars and having the same effect. Just that Jo and I are about to finish our trip around the land down under. We've had about 8 weeks here now, and have decided to fly on after completing our 10,000th kilometre this week. We left you a few weeks ago in Melbourne. We only spent a day there as we'd seen a lot of it the last time around. We took the van for a great days drive down the Great Ocean Road heading westwards. It lived up to its billing as one of the worlds great drives, winding along the coast line up and down clifftop roads ... read more
