We left Hawaii a few days ago now, been a little lazy with updating this. We stayed in there for a week and both of us loved it. I have to say that it wasn't exactly what we expected, but it was still awesome. We arrived in Hawaii on Thursday the 22nd June, and it was easily the longest day of my life. From midnight New Zealand time to midnight Hawaii time took 45 hours! We crossed over the international dateline on the way, and the time difference meant that we arrived in Hawaii about 11 hours before we left New Zealand, crazy stuff. The first thing that we did in Hawaii was go to the beach, our hostel was definitely not the nicest we have been to... but it was only one block from Waikiki ... read more

June 22nd 2006

Our whirlwind tour of New Zealand has come to an end and it has, overall, been an awesome couple of weeks. It has definitely given me a taste of what New Zealand is about, and I definitely want to come back for longer, but never, ever again in June. The weather was a real problem on a couple of days... our time in Taupo was spoilt by torrential rain and awful visibility, and Rotorua was terrible the first day we were there, but the last 3 days have been really clear which was great. We arrived on the North Island last Friday, taking a ferry from Picton to Wellington. In Wellington we stayed with some (very) distant relatives of mine... it was nice to get out of hostels for one night, and get some good food. ... read more

Our time on New Zealand's South Island has been mainly spent on buses. We really didn't plan this leg of the trip particularly well. Two weeks is not long enough to try and do an entire country. We have visited Christchurch (1 night), Queenstown (3 nights), Franz Josef Glacier (2 nights), and Nelson (1 night), in that time we have had 3 days which haven't involved bus journeys, and 4 days which were spent almost entirely on buses (two 8 hour trips, one 10 hours, one 6 hours, and then a 3 hour boat to the north island). New Zealand is having it's worst weather for 60 years! It's snowing where it's never snowed before, roads everywhere are closed, there's a few cities without power, and it's just generally been cold and wet. And, if that's ... read more

All good things must come to an end, and our time in Australia has been fantastic. I have loved it. In the days between the diving and flying to New Zealand we mostly headed into the rainforest area around Cairns. The day after diving involved sleeping as we had the luxury of a lie-in for the first time in a few days, and on Monday we also had an early start... back at the boat terminal for 8 so we could catch a boat to Fitzroy Island. Fitzroy Island is a beautiful little island with similar landscape to the mainland, forests and beaches. We walked up 1,000 feet to the summit and got some amazing views of the Coral Sea and the mainland. I also learnt a valuable lesson - hiking in flip-flops is really hard ... read more

June 4th 2006

Josh and I are now qualified open water scuba divers! We have a license to go 18 metres underwater, took us 4 days to get that bit of paper, and they were up there with the best days of our trip. The first 2 days were a little surreal, had to get up at 6.30 to get to school at 7.30, that was savage, and not what you expect to be doing on holiday... so all you back home having to do exams and revision... i felt a (very) little bit of your pain. The theory part basically involved learning what all the instruments did and how not to kill yourself while diving (the tutor, Mike's most commonly used phrase - in a dutch accent - was "don't do ______, or you will die"). Once all ... read more

Been in Cairns a few days now, and so far we are loving it. This is easily a place where we could spend months, there is so much to do. Sam flew back to Sydney today, before heading off to the UK and back to work, so it is just me and Josh again for the time being. The weather so far here has been fantastic... it's a tropical climate so it's been pretty humid, but the rainy season has just ended so it's all sunshine and temperatures in the mid to high 20s which is great. We have basically just taken advantage of that warm weather and spent our last few days in the water. Had a pretty surreal experience as well, Josh, Sam, and I were walking into Cairns to go to a bar ... read more

On Wednesday Josh, Sam, and I left Brisbane for the day to go on a tour of Moreton Island. It was amazing. We were the only people booked on the tour so the guide was basically our personal chauffer for the day, brilliant. Moreton Island is the 3rd biggest sand island in the world, and it is pretty spectacular. We started the day off by heading to the dunes and doing some more sand boarding... it was much better than last time, the dunes were bigger, boards were faster and we were allowed to stand up on them as well! We combined with another tour to go down in a pyramid, we got put at the bottom, and basically ate sand all the way down... the tour guides found it hilarious, I looked albino after that ... read more

May 23rd 2006

It's been 5 days since i last posted here. Thought it was about time I let you know what I'm up to. We left Sydney early Friday morning to go to Brisbane. We saw the Da Vinci Code (thought it was brilliantly done) and otherwise spent the day exploring Brisbane and found that it is exactly the same as all the other cities we have visited. It's a nice place, but if you put me in the middle of it and asked me where i was, i could just as easily say Perth, Melbourne, or Sydney. We stayed one night and then opted for a change of scenery and took a train and bus ride 100km down the coast to Surfer's Paradise, definitely one of the best decisions we ever made. On Saturday we went to ... read more

Well, we have certainly experienced mixed fortunes over the last few days... some of the best and worst weather, spectacular scenery, and unbelieveable displays of incompetence. I'll begin with the positives. The last couple of days have had great weather, Josh, Rob, Sam (Rob's army mate) and I spent today on Manly beach (we had planned to go a few days back but it was raining). Manly was much nicer than Bondi beach... Bondi was too touristy while Manly was a lot quieter, much easier to find room to move. Josh and I got up at 4 this morning to watch Barca beat Arsenal in the Champions League, unfortunately the TV cut out over Lehmann's sending off (really gutted to miss that but was delighted when we worked out what had happened!!). Another highlight of our ... read more

Rob has joined us for 10 days of our trip. We all arrived in Sydney on Friday, Josh and I explored the city during the day, we took my (broken) iPod to the Apple store to get sorted out, thankfully though my brother indirectly gave his iPod to Rob so I will not be without music for the rest of this trip (that is true brotherly love!! cheers buddy). We also visited Sydney Harbour in the evening and took a look at the Opera house and the bridge. Once Rob arrived we went to a local pub and had some schooners. Crazily Rob bumped into someone he served with in Iraq, on the bus on the way to Bondi Beach, it's a small small world!! (Despite the fact that Rob insists it is actually very big). ... read more
