Many years ago i managed to convince the University of Manchester to give me a planning degree. I have spent some of my time since then toying with the idea of a career in planning in new zealand particularly whilst i was travelling and working in Nz and Australia for 11 months in 2003/2004. As 'luck' would have it, whilst working in Manchester last year, to cut an awfully long story short (and you'll thank me for that), I was offered position at Auckland City Council, and have been living and working in Auckland since February, and that, in a kiwifruit, is the story so far....

Hey Guys, just a quick one really, I realise that ive been neglecting my blog terribly recently, still not having published my photos of my mum and nan visiting in February, if only walls could talk! We had a great time, and mum still spent less than she thought, times are high on 2.8 dollars to the pound, so please be generous when i finally return to blighty!. Ive spent the last month or so in training more-or-less for a 100km Charity Walk which i completed over the weekend, (i'll post photos of that later), without waxing lyrical (i'll save that for later), twas' the hardest event ive ever undertaken and it nearly killed me, twice, but ive emerged with only slight chafing of the posterior and a marginally dicky ankle, so no great shakes. ... read more

Hey guys, finally managed to drag myself into the internet cafe, even though i may have to leave early to watch the cricket, as unbelievable as it may sound, the pommies have made it through to the penultimate tri series fixture, with a game in hand, i'm really not sure how much more of this i can take. Anyway, you will no doubt recall, i left you last time with promises of Christmas adventures, of which we had a few. This was no doubt connected to the arrival of two friends Cheri and Louisa from Manchester, well actually Lou comes from Shaw, but i'm sure she wont mind been tarred with the mancunian brush, as we are similarly unconsciously obsessed with all things northern, John Shuttleworth included. I picked Lou and Cheri from the airport on ... read more

So, just thought I’d fill you in over my recent events November ended with the final day of Movember for which we all grew exceedingly ridiculous facial hair, it wasn’t long before mine had to go but I was to be kept entertained. I was pleased to have meet the arrival of two young ladies who I’d worked with in Manchester on the 6th of December, I met Lou and Cheri at the airport just after poor Cheri had been relieved of 200 dollars by the customs for attempting to illegally smuggle an orange into the country. The arrival had been preceded by a day of me running round Auckland trying to sort out medical assistance for Louisa who had contracted some Singaporean spider-bite-itous en-rout, but thank the lord the swelling went down and we ... read more

Hey Guys Well, I know ive been neglecting the blog, but its all been rather hectic since my last tales were bestowed upon those unfortunate enough to be able to access the internet. I think I had come back from Queenstown the last time I wrote, as a young man (well, relatively speaking), with a head full of dreams but with pockets full of holes i had been invigorated by the south island scenery, this was soon knocked out of me after a couple of weeks back in Auckland (or after several beer soaked leaving dos - I cant quite remember which came first), but I was soon to find myself in the thick of it once more. Two weekends after my Queenstown Adventure, it was the New Zealand Leg of the WRC (World Rally Championship ... read more

Well, I can almost let the photos do the talking in this entry, but i know how much you enjoy my monthly words of wisdom, so i'll let you in on the latest round of adventures. So as a present to myself, I organised to go down to Queenstown for the weekend after my half marathon run. I’d managed to book some flights in August for just $150 return, which when you consider its nearly 2 hours flying time is a pretty good deal, as the photos show too, as i’d got a window seat the views on the way down were pretty spectacular. I’ve said it before, but its great flying away for the weekend, especially as travel in New Zealand’s ‘geopolitically stable’ environment is still pretty laid back, with not a latex glove nor ... read more

Hi guys, its been a while. Time continues to tick by on the other side of the earth, summer has finally started to make its first appearances, although saying that, i'm specifically sat in an internet cafe today to avoid the worst of the weather, which finally arrived at lunchtime. I’m also glad that I got my wipers changed on my new vehicle which has made driving around town a little less hazardous. So, this week I have promised for you a much less dramatic (if similarly intrepid) tale than my last entry, which even I fear reading, I have been taking it much easier. I’ve been having some physio as a result of my car accident, which has been going pretty well, and after all even I know that a twice weekly neck and shoulder ... read more

Well, it sure has been an eventful couple of weeks.. I managed to finally free myself from the grips of Auckland and get down to the Coromandel a couple of weeks back, the idea was to take a break and catch up with some well-earned rest and relaxation, it seems however that those in charge had other plans. I ambled down to the Coromandel on Saturday morning, taking breakfast in Thames, it was a wonderful sunny day. I stopped for breakfast and then drove over the mountains and did a bit of giant kauri spotting on the way to the east coast, where I headed for Cathedral Cove. Cathedral Cove, you may have seen before, its appeared on a dozen arty greetings cards, which you can probably purchase at WHSmith. I’ve taken care to include photos ... read more

Make a note, never move into your new residence under cover of the night Awakened by a 2-stroke roar at 3am in the morning, I should have but two and two together, but it was only when I walked to work in the revealing light of day that I noted that I actually live 3 doors down from the Auckland Chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. That’s just great. ‘Nevermind’ I was told,, “At least its not The Mongrel Mob” ( a notorious kiwi gang), Er ok that’s alright then…phew that was a lucky escape. It was only when further examining the house noticeboard, that I saw the letter from our 2 wheeled guardians dated June, regarding there intention to host a 43rd Anniversary Party, that must have been fun, they seemed quite civil though, ... read more

Well, I'll just start by saying that ive committed myself by buying a 6 month pass at the local climbing wall, and as a Yorkshireman, its now going to make it difficult (as a matter of principal) to leave Auckland before my pass has expired.. Its also going to make it difficult to leave the country after running up a considerable amount purchases on my westpac 'gold card', because of my rapidly growing collection of outdoor gear, the last purchase, a pair of sturdy boots, set me back almost as much as much as the cost of my mazda 626 (it did'nt actually cost that much), but bye eck', after a solid weekend with a full pack on my back hurling myself down snowy ravines, I can safely say that ive not even got a blister ... read more
