After 5 years of living in London my wife, Lisa, and I have finally decided to get away from it all and travel. We have resigned from our jobs and have the flat up for rent. This will be our first experience of backpacking but we are both very excited. We intend spending 7 months travelling to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Philippines before heading home to South Africa for close on two months. I stumbled on the website when doing a Google search on Ko Tao and have been hooked ever since.

As we drove down the Princes Highway early on Friday morning, the rain splattered down the windscreen and the sky was a dark shade of grey. But it was a long weekend, and we didn’t mind the weather, for we were going on an adventure in to an unknown region of NSW. We’d only ever ventured as far as Wollongong on the South Coast, so you can imagine how pleasantly surprised we were by the scenery and surroundings as we travelled further away from Sydney and then Wollongong, in to the Shoalhaven region. It is a very scenic drive and we were taken by the real countryside charm of villages liked Berry, where we couldn’t resist a stop off on the way back for coffee and chocolate brownies with whipped cream and yes, you guessed it, ... read more

Keith and I set off on our first ever camping adventure this weekend to the Royal National Park, south of Sydney. The Park was established in 1798 and was the first gazzeted national park in the world. Friday night we hastily packed a tent, sleeping mats, sleeping bags and a very strange selection of food in to our packs and crashed in to bed, only to be woken six hours later by the alarm clock begging us to get up and away. We loaded up, our backpacks laden with 10 or more litres of drinking water and set off to catch a bus in to town. The journey to Otford was easy, just an hour on the train from Central Station. The train heads South out of Sydney and passes some awesome waterways. An hour ... read more

We arrived in Hervey Bay, fresh off the plane from Sydney and were conspicuous from the start, overdressed in our jeans, fleeces and trainers, whilst the locals wandered round in board shorts and flip slops. The temperature was about 15 degrees warmer than it had been in Sydney, the sun was hot in the sky and it seemed strange to think that it is autumn/winter here. The shuttle bus took us through dry, arid and very flat landscape, now and again dotted with a few settlements. Nearer Bundaberg the landscape changed to green fields as far as the eye could see, mainly sugar cane farms. We were dropped off at Cellblock, the place we would call home for the next week or so, and found our room to be in a converted cell. Quite appropriate considering ... read more

It has been a long break between blogs, whilst we spent the last month and a half in South Africa. For those of you who thought you had heard the last of us, we have now decided to extend our travels. Which means that we fly back to London tonight, spend five nights running around sorting out our lives so we can once again set off. This time we will be heading to Australia, where we will spend three months in Bundaberg (Queensland) picking fruit, and then see what happens after that. The three months harvesting work will allow us to extend our work permits for another year if needed. Below are some of the highlights of our South African leg. Our arrival in Johannesburg was a rather dramatic one, as Keith fell ill on the ... read more

We left the relaxed atmosphere of Palawan behind and headed to a very hot, humid and heaving Manila. We decided to pay a little extra for a “coupon” taxi from the airport to Melati Pension, in order to avoid the chaos and the touts outside the airport doors. The drive was surprisingly tame when compared to our experiences in Cebu City. Most of our day in Manila was spent in Robinson shopping mall, enjoying the air-con whilst whiling away the hours until our flight left for Hong Kong. We arrived in Hong Kong late in the evening and were shocked to find the temperature was a chilly 10 degrees Celsius. This was a real shock to our systems after experiencing 30 degree heat in Manila a few hours earlier. We caught the A11 bus to Causeway ... read more

Back in Puerto Princessa after spending 11 days on this island of Palawan. It is not known as the last frontier for nothing! We left Puerto early on the 2nd March to catch a jeepney to Port Barton. Trying to find out what time the jeepney left was a little tricky, generally the locals told us it could leave anywhere between 8 and 10am. So we left our pensionne early to make sure we didn't miss it, took a tricycle ride 20 minutes out of town to the bus terminal and found our jeepney. It only left at ten so we had to while away two hours in the dusty parking lot. At least we provided some entertainment for the locals. When we finally left, the jeepney was piled high with boxes, crates, chickens, sacks of ... read more

The guide book advises that Cebu City is a little less chaotic and easier to get around than Manila - well, we flew in to Manila and flew straight out again to Cebu, hoping that the guide book wouldn't let us down... We were shocked at the chaos, poverty and fumes that hit us in Cebu. If Cebu is meant to be any indication, we are pretty scared for our last night in Manila. The guide book says "At least the Cebu taxi drivers don't work for Satan". Well they do. But rewind a bit, we left Hong Kong on an early morning flight, landed in Manila and bought an onward ticket for the next flight to Cebu. Jumped in a taxi and decided to find somewhere to stay uptown, which we were advised by a ... read more

Two weeks of sun, sea, sand, boats, more boats, red sunsets and loads of snorkeling. Fiji looks just as you see it in all the travel ads and brochures. Azure sea, white sand, palm trees, volcanic landscapes, green hills and beautiful coral reefs. Our flight to Fiji was an easy 3 hours from Auckland, and we were ushered to our hotel - Nadi Bay Hotel - a few kms from the airport, where we had just enough time to dump our bags and join in a traditional kava ceremony. We had no idea we would get to taste the famous kava within an hour of landing in Fiji. Kava is ground from the root of a plant related to the pepper tree and mixed with water, so you can imagine what it tastes like - it ... read more

From Queenstown we headed North past Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. The weather was beautiful, the scenery spectacular, but the hairpin bends and one-way bridges across the rivers made for a slow journey. We enjoyed lunch on a very desolate but pretty Haast beach. Unfortunately we had entered sand fly territory and could not hang around long before making a dash for the car. The west coast of the South Island is sparsely inhabited and the few towns that you do come across are small and seem to lack life. The town at Fox Glacier is no different. We arrived in the afternoon and checked into an uninspiring but comfortable holiday park. After dropping our gear off we headed to Matheson Lake for a walk and to try and catch the reflection of NZ’s highest peaks ... read more

The ferry ride across to the South Island was really something, with the last 20 minutes winding our way through the spectacular Marlborough Sounds to the port of Picton. I think we knew then that the South Island was going to be really picturesque, and we have not been disappointed. In the week that we have been travelling here, it has only rained once, although we are told to expect wet weather on the West Coast. Our journey began with a short drive on a very steep and curvy road (we now know that nearly every road on this island is like that) to a little place called Anakiwa, set on the waters edge in the Marlborough Sounds. We had a little cottage on the waters edge all to ourselves and the owner, Helen, met us ... read more
