We had partied made new friends drank loads tried to scar the living daylights out of ourselves and watched England stumble out of the World Cup. It was time to leave Queenstown! Hopped back on the Stray Bus and headed for Milford Sound. Today was Georgina's birthday and the World Cup final only one of which we where celebrating. We bumped into a few friends made at the top of the South Island apparently on their 3rd loop, you meet all sorts. It took about 5 hours to get to Milford, we drove into Fiordland National Park. The landscapes where simply stunning, snow topped mountains split by wild grassy plains forests dotted all around set amongst the spectacular fjords. I took some of favourite NZ pictures here. If it wasn't for the bad weather I would ... read more

We had big expectations before arriving in Queenstown it had quite a reputation and didn't disappoint. The Stray Bus dropped us off, after some serious discussions and several viewings we decided Southern Laughter was for us. Mark & Georgina had a double bed room I roughed it in an 8 person dorm. Our priorities where adrenalin, football and partying. My dorm had a good mix of hard partying hard drinking travellers, that was one boxed ticked. We started the adrenaline rushes off in style with the Nevis Highwire. At 134m it is worlds 2nd highest bungy jump, that’s 8s of freefall a fucking long time! count it and consider you are plummeting towards the ground for that long! After signing your life away you take a basket out to the pod, a glass box suspended between ... read more

From Franz Josef it was only a short hop inland through the towering Southern Alps to Wanaka, probably my favourite town in NZ. Although the craic is mighty in Queenstown, Wanaka is beautiful. The town, situated on the edge of lake Wanaka, our hostel The Purple Cow again probably my favourite in NZ. From the porch it was panoramic views of the icy blue Lake Wanaka surrounded by snow capped mountains. I was never in a rush to go anywhere. Wanaka really was a place for bumping into people, I met a friend from grape pruning we bumped into Laura from Nelson and Mandi, our friend from Uni. There where top Indian restaurants great scenery and even funky internet cafe's. What more could you ask, just a shame it was winter and trekking wasn't possible. But ... read more

Franz Josef! not the Austrian archduke but one of NZ's most famous landmarks, a Glacier in the Wetstlands National Park. Its one of only three that descend from the mountains into temperate rainforest, now I've seen all of them Puerto Moreno, Franz Josef and Fox. We arrived on the Stray Bus from Barrytown mid-avo. First thing we noticed where majestic views and just how damn cold it was. The town, Franz Josef is at the bottom of the glacier and snuggled into the Southern Alps. We stayed at the Rainforest Retreat Lodge, sounds alot nicer than it actually was, full of Kiwi Experience types. The next days weather report was grim so delayed our glacier hike and had a night out. Hit the only open bar in town with a few fellow Stray travelers. Quickly descended ... read more

Leaving Picton we jumped back on the Stray Bus, just a couple of hours along the coast to Nelson. This was a strategic stop for the start of the WC. The weather wasn't too good, so amused ourselves with a wine tour. NZ vino is pretty good our favourite, Tres Hermanos from Te Mania. We then got lucky, friends of George's lived close by and offered us the use of a car! We met them at the Wearable Art Exhibition, the car turned out to be a 2 seater jeep! with a spot of improvisation we made a third towel seat. Mark at the wheel, George riding shotgun and me snoozing on the backpacks. Our next destination, Abel Tasman National Park and stayed at Old MacDonalds farm. Quickly upgrading from the Bunkhouse to the deluxe cabin. ... read more

Leaving Blenheim Team NZ, that's Markus, Georgina and myself headed down the road to Picton. Our first adventure was to be the Queen Charlotte Track. A 2 day walking track running through the Marlborough Sounds. It was late autumn, winter approaching and the track apparently was boggy so we decided just an overnight stay and days trek. Packed plenty of Ham & Cheese and took the mid-morning water taxi to Torea Bay. Our plush hostel for the night, The Portage was only a short walk from the Torea jetty. A glorious day and with an avo to kill we rented a boat and set out exploring the Marlborough Sounds. The boat was about 12ft with a 2 stroke engine, none of us had ever done this before and surprisingly we made it onto the Sounds without ... read more

My plan all along had been to get back home for the World Cup and spend the next month comfortably watching it unfold on the sofa/down the boozer, only to be interrupted by a full on week in Germany my mates. Seven odd months should have been more than enough time.....late April, 6 weeks to the WC I'm in Taupo and have only just scratched the surface of NZ. I've now got a terrible dilemma, rush the rest of my travels but make the WC or continue travelling at my preferred pace but miss the WC. I have to say this was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make (that's right I've had a tough life so far....). Spent the next 2 weeks, from Tuapo to Wellington, up and down mountains contemplating what ... read more

Instead of jumping back on the Stray bus I took a detour with Jen through the National Park and Forgotten Highway to New Plymouth, on the west coast. She did the driving I choose the music (and slept). The forgotten highway gives you a pretty good feel for what NZ is all about. From the Mountains of the National Park you pass into sheep filled rolling hills onto unsealed roads and tropical vegetation before hitting the coastal town of New Plymouth. Nice town as far as we could see, nothing actually was happening while we where there pubs, restaurants, shops mostly deserted. The wind wand on the beach path was impressive, and so may I say where my pictures of sunset. The reason for stopping was Mount Taranaki, we had mountain climbing fever!! Mt Taranki like ... read more

Next stop Taupo only 45mins south of Rotorura, the town sits on the edge of Lake Taupo. A huge lake that was once the site of a massive volcano, before it blew itself to pieces. First night I stayed with the rest of the Stray Bus at Urban Retreat, shite, facilities where bad and a very annoying Kiwi Experience bus had just arrived. Next day I moved into the Rainbow Lodge, an excellent hostel, nice kitchen, sauna, friendly slackpackers and a couple of hot swedish room mates. I spent the next week hanging out at the Rainbow Lodge waiting for the weather to clear. The Tongariro Crossing is a 17Km day trek though the Tongariro National Park, passing over spectacular volcanic terrain. You have to be careful with the weather in the mountains as it makes ... read more

After delaying and delaying I finally made it to NZ, only 13 hours from Santiago to Auckland but it felt like another world. The first thing I really noticed was just how nice NZ is, everyone is friendly, the air quality is good, the cities are clean, the loos are excellent, the buses are nice...you get the picture. It took a few days to get used to the idea of not being in South Am, found myself using Spanish words a few times in conversation. But it was was good holding a full conversation with somebody in a shop for the first time in ages. The next thing to get used to was the Kiwi lingo 'Sweet As', 'Arr Yeah', 'Shit Yeah' all used in pretty much every conversation. Other words of interest, Trundlers - Supermarket ... read more
