Update by Zoe Thank god our last overnight bus (in Oz at least) is finished, as if sleeping on a bus is not bad enough, we got woken up at 7am to watch a crap movie! A day loafing at the lagoon in Airlie beach helped recharge our batteries ready for our 3 days sailing around the Whitsundays. I say sailing, but as Danny is prone to a bit of the old sea sickness we opted for the boat - Pride of Airlie - that docks at a resort each night. So at least we slept on land, although it was in a 6 bed dorm, fortunately we didn't share a room with anyone who pissed on the floor in the night (this happened in one of the dorms one night!). First day, we left at ... read more

In case you’re wondering, we left Katherine on 20/7 and we headed to the Douglas/Daly River area which was 186 kms up the highway and then 60kms west. It was a nice short drive for a change and we booked into the small bush caravan park called Douglas/Daly Resort (Resort was a bit of an overstatement), got set up and went for a walk along the river which ran along the rear of the park. It may not have had resort facilities and was stuck in the middle of nowhere, but the river was really pretty. There are a number of designated bush camping spots for about 1km along the river at various pools, one of which was a hot springs which we intended to swim in, but when we got there, there were 4 kids ... read more

Hey Everyone Not long to go in Melbourne now and Claire and I are really looking forward to hitting the road. Whilst our pit stop in Melbourne was a necessary money making venture, as they say a rolling stone gathers no moss and we are starting to feel furry. Anyhow, before we leave there is a list of places we need to visit before we head off. And one of them was Williamstown, a short train journey from the city centre and you find yourself in a pleasant coastal retreat for many Melburnians in the summer. We had a look the sea front and had lunch at a nice restaurant by the pier. They weather here is not bad for mid winter, sunny and about 17 degrees. I'm not complaining as we have hardly seen a ... read more

We just picked everyone up from their homestays this morning. Although they were glad to see each other, they were sad to leave the famillies. From what I have heard, they all had a great time. Right now we have some free time before we go to feed kangaroos and hold koalas, so everyone is shopping in a small town called Karanda on top of the Tablelands. We had to drive through a rainforest to get up here. It is the dry season, so I don't think it was as tropical as most of us thought (although still very tropical!). Tomorrow we go to the Great Barrier Reef. I think the students are very excited about that. We have had perfect weather up until today. It is a little cloudy, and everyone (Australians) seem to think ... read more

Hello all, Thought I'd post. Sorry for lack of updates nan and everyone else. We haven't really been upto much so there's not really been much to update you on...however today we went to Cairns Tropical Zoo. Just a 10 minute drive up the Captain Cook Highway from where we are living at the moment the zoo offers all of the usual australian animals and birds you would hope to see. These included Cockatoos, Koala bears, wombats, (didnt see any echidnas), crocodiles, kangaroos, snakes, lizards and other furry friends. We had a really great day except for a minor interlude where I got a massive migraine for no reason. After eating some hardcore pain killers we returned to the park to get some pictures of some roos and koalas, the first ones I've seen in 8 ... read more

The next day we grabbed some supplies from the nearby filling station and got the bus to Kings Canyon for the 6km walk. My wife quite anxious about taking our son and daughter on this walk as many of the pictures she had seen of the canyon showed the steep shear drops, however it wasn’t too bad and we made sure that we kept them on a tight grip for certain parts of it. The pace was quite slow, given the AAT Kings usual clientele, but at least that meant that it wasn’t too hard for the children. We took a stash of chocolate with us to keep them going and our guide, Jenny, was on hand during the walk with her usual fantastic commentary. There was an optional diversion to the Garden of Eden, so ... read more

Sorry music lovers, this is not a post about track 12 on the Belle & Sebastian’s most recent album… Anyone who has spent any amount of time living in close proximity to myself can attest to the fact that I drink massive amounts of hot tea. By massive, I mean on average 3-5 cups a day, sometimes much more, depending on the weather and current life events. Getting a cup of tea in States usually follows the described procedure: Amy: “I’ll have the English breakfast tea please.” Cashier: “We don’t have English Breakfast, is normal tea okay?” Amy: “yes yes, that’s fine.” Cashier: That will be $1.50” (on average…many places its quite less…at the Blue Bean Café its only 55 or 60 cents. The most I’ve seen is 1.90). The Cashier then hands Amy a paper ... read more

We were all inspired by our fascinating stay in Cape Tribulation and decided to try and venture even further north to Cooktown in the Cape York Peninsula. We checked first with the locals at Cape Trib whether the 4WD only Bloomfield Track was open. This track was built in 1983 and is impassable during heavy rains. We followed Cris and Claire in their Toyota (this is the sort of drive you don’t want to do on your own). Although it is a much shorter route to Cooktown in terms of distance than the Venture Mulligan Highway (300k’s) it still took us 3 hours to travel approx 100 kilometers. This journey was an adventure in itself; the extremely steep, single track twists and turns as it weaves it way through beautiful tropical rain forests in Daintree National ... read more
