We had the morning to look around Alice Springs, once everywhere was open, but unfortunately there was no where near enough time left before our late morning flight. We were left with just two hours to cover the Old Telegraph Station, the School of The Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We hence arranged for a taxi to take us from place to place at specific times. It was a complete rush, but we managed to cover them all, albeit briefly. The Old Telegraph station was just as I remembered it from last time (see ) and, given how early in the morning it was, we had the whole place to ourselves. In the age of the Internet and mobile phones, the idea that a message needed to be sent by means of a series ... read more

so little time to settle down for your update... before flying to cairns we spent our dat at UNSW. it turned out to be foundation day. an occasion uni students have found to appreciate fine liquor during the chilly days of winter. needing to pack some gadgets from the lab for our trip Clement was able to introduce us to Joe Wolfe. hIs exploits had already made their way to us.Niko wanting to gamble once more his life, decided to give Joe the power to take away. so off we were to the physics' game room, where the instrument was waiting. 2 boards of wood. each a meter wide. all 9000 nails where there. erected up to a frightening 10 cm. all pumped up from the adrenaline niko couldnt wait any longer. layed down on the ... read more

We headed off with our new addition to the tropics of Queeensland , after a few calls in to see the Family we consider this leg to be officially started at the tropic of capricorn or Rockhampton. For anyone who has been to Rocky will full well understand why i am ending the sentence now.! The next stop is Mackay 300 ks north, a great seaside city that calls itself the cane capital, they all boast this title all the way to Cairns, lol. Mackay has the title of Coffee Club for us as we are basing a fair bit of the trip on the amount of coffee clubs that we can find and relax in. ( Coffee Club is a franchise of cafes around Australia, If you join as a VIP for 22 bucks they ... read more

Hi All I know what you're thinking, no blogs for weeks and then two in a fortnight. Don't worry, this is just a quickie to bring the story up-to-date so if I were you I'd save it for Friday afternoon when you need to look busy. As you probably guessed from the cheesy title of this instalment, I've left the warm weather behind and am now in wintery Oz. After a lovely, relaxing and very expensive 10 days in San Francisco (my credit card is now on life support!) where I caught up with my mum and some old family friends I flew to Melbourne on 20th July (arriving on 22nd July having crossed the dateline and completely missed the 21st!) and got back into proper travelling mode. Melbourne bills itself as the 'loveable, liveable city', ... read more

We escaped the gind of Cairns and we were glad of it too, I had had enough of the suburban sprawl that is Cairns, It is good to hang around a place for a while to get the feel of it. The best thing about Cairns is firstly the reef and secondly the Rainforest that lies directly behind it give or take 30 kilometres. The list of Barron Gorge, Kuranda and Mareeba all lie to the west of Cairns on the road called the Savannah Way, This road goes for a total of 4,000 kilometres, It starts at Cairns and terminates at Broome. This is the rainforest belt, It also has the highest town in Queensland its name.. Ravenshoe. It has the best free camp at the Railway Museum. They ask for a gold coin donation. ... read more

Travellers ...Lock them up , The Cairns Council are the sole owners of all the caravan/trailer parks, and we are not going to stay in them!! Threaten us as they did!!! Today we woke up to the first day of rain!! I was at frist dissapointed, but wet is wet...and you can't stay dry when you are snorkeling! The ride out to the reef is usually a bit rough (a lot of the boats are nicknamed 'vomit commets' if that tells you anything) and the bad weather only makes the trip worse. A lot of us sat on the third level outside, only to be completely drenched from the waves in the first ten minutes. You would have thought the students were on a water ride, they were screaming and laughing and switching sides to try to stay dry (futile). After a two hour ride, we were all ready to get off the boat! (As a comparison, I sat on the first level on the way back ... read more

We shall just say one word on this leg of 350 ks of coast, awesome, some detractors have said of Townsville that is should be called Brownsville, ( It isnt as green as some of the towns in the Tropics ), We say so what. We are the eternal optimists and we honestly try to see the best of a place without comparing it to the last one we were in. Townsville is one of the largest Northern towns and is a big base for the Aussie Army, Its population is around the 45,000 or so . The Eateries are great, we love Mexican and Indian { Jo loves Thai } so we rate these on the one to five scale based on food and service, We give the Garbutt Indian Restaurant a fat 4 , ... read more
