We are embarking on stage two of our trip around Oz, interrupted at end of 2006 by sale of house and work - yes work, how inconvenient. Having covered up the middle of Oz, down the west coast and back along the Nullabor to home, this time we are heading through outback NSW and Qld to get the Gulf (Karumba) then across the Savannah Way to Cairns where we leave the caravan and head up to Cape York using the roof-top tent (to avoid the crocs). Then we will mosey on back down the east coast to Melbourne. Goals: Learn to surf (properly), a glass or two of vino, regular golf, a glass of two of vino, getting a suntan, a glass or two of vino.......well you get the drift.

Ok this is the finale and it maybe be a bit of a let down blog for some, because it was a familiar part of the country for both of us, so not much new to discover, plus rellies to visit. Nevertheless, I write it with a mixture of joy and sadness - joy at the memories of an adventure that we will never forget, we've had to pinch ourselves many times to remind us that it was real - both this trip and the last. And sadness that its all over and we are back onto the wheel of the rat race.... Anyway, after leaving Coffs Harbour/Bellingen we drove the short distance to South West Rocks - it was one of mum's favourite places. Its a lovely little seaside village, but not very cosmopolitan despite ... read more

Just when you thought you'd stopped getting bloody travelblog links in your email........here we are again. Apparently there are some out there who noticed that we had not finished our blogs and wanted to see more (obviously family) . After being back in Melbourne and back at work (what 6 month holiday?????), I'm struggling to get touch with my inner traveller, but here goes.... You may remember that our last blog finished deliciously at the Bundaberg Rum Distillary. After guzzling a rum or two before 10.00am (Wes plans on doing that every day when he retires), we headed off down the coast to Coolum Beach and set up camp in the caravan park literally on the beach, where we stayed for 5 nights. One day was a drive to Noosa for a beautiful lunch overlooking the ... read more

We left Bowen and headed the very short distance (108km) to another of our favourite spots, Airlie Beach. We have hired a bareboat power cruiser to cruise the Whitsundays twice before from here, but from first hand experience they are only really enjoyable if the winds are below 20knots - unless you’ve hired a yacht and you are an avid yachty. So we decided to wait until we got to Airlie to assess the forecast and take our chances on whether there was a boat available. The coastal waters forecast was good - winds under 20 knots expected for next 3 days. We made the enquiry on Saturday and were in luck, there was a 36 footer available on Monday morning for 5 days. We spent Sunday getting supplies (mostly happy hour ones!) and packing sarongs. ... read more

We arrived back into Port Douglas from the Cape trip and our first 2 days were taken up with cleaning the car, washing and re-stocking the cupboards. It took every bit of the two days to get the dust and mud from the outside and the inside of the car - and we are still finding spots we missed. Our third day we went on a Barrier Reef cruise on the Calypso. We had been out snorkelling to the reef on our last visit to Port Douglas 8 years ago, but it’s so beautiful that we went again. We saw whales on the way out to the outer reef and dolphins on the way back. It was a perfect day weather wise - the crew said it was the best day they had had all season ... read more

PS Part 1: There were two pages of photos on the last blog in case some missed them. The last blog finished with us saying goodbye to our camping mates in Seisia and heading down to Vrilya Point. Vrilya Point is on the west coast of the cape, 88km south of Seisia and 27km (this part takes an hour) off the northern bypass and is another track without a signpost which we missed and had to turn back for. It’s one of the Cape’s lesser known spots - which also means no toilets, no showers, no rubbish disposal and no running water… again. Having said that it was a beautiful spot and after the first night we had it to ourselves for another two nights - apart from the ferocious midgies and mozzies at dusk. Every ... read more

We left Port Douglas full of high expectations and bravado and we have not been disappointed - although the bravado did disappear somewhat at our first challenging creek crossing on the OTL (local buzz term for the Overland Telegraph Line). Before reaching the start of the OTL, we bush camped at a few spots. The first was just inside the Lakefield National Park at Six Mile Lagoon - a very pretty lily covered lagoon with abundant bird life including the very shy, Jabirus. We had the whole place to ourselves. It was here that a big dose of bush camping reality set in with a thud - no toilets (apart from our shovel and a toilet roll), no showers & no running water and with temperatures of 28-29 degrees & 90 % humidity this was not ... read more

NEWS FLASH - WE HAVE BEEN MAROONED!! Due to a laptop screen failure last Thursday night before our departure to the Cape on Friday morning, we ended up in Port Douglas because being without communications or photo download functionality for 3 weeks was unthinkable - it has been bad enough for just a week. But do we ever pick the right spot to get stranded????!!! To cut a long story short, after dealing with Dell’s Malaysian call centres and Indian call centres until I could scream, trying to give the address and describe the proximity of the remote paradise that we found ourselves in, we finally had an onsite technician turn up (yes he sat at the caravan table) to replace the LCD late yesterday. Ok, now that we are back on the air - to ... read more

You’ll remember that our last blog finished in Lightning Ridge. Well with heavy hearts we left Lightning Ridge and our new friends and headed out along the ‘track’…...and cutting to the present - we are now in QUEENSLAND - you know beautiful one day, perfect the next - and with sunny 32 degree days it didn’t take long for the memories of Lightning Ridge to fade along with our porcelain white Melbourne skin. To our Melbournite friends and family freezing their way through winter - hee hee. Ok enough rubbing it in, backing up slightly to fill you in on the gaps, our first stop after Lightning Ridge was Bourke which required a back track through Walgett. Walgett is a bit of a sad town now - I was here years ago, but since then the ... read more

New York, London, Paris, Mudgee, Rome……… We left Bathurst for Mudgee on Tuesday 20th, a trip of 236km, and after the stops mentioned in the last blog, we arrived in Mudgee greeted by another beautiful day. I remember Mudgee from being here for my cousin Evan’s wedding some 20+ years ago - and I have to say that it’s lost some of the quaintness I remember. I think that Victoria has more picturesque winery towns than Mudgee - but we needed a rest (yes, its stressful all this travel) so we set up for a few days. Wednesday was spent with a walk around town, washing of the car and our usual cocktail hour. On Thursday, we mapped out 5 wineries to visit from the tourist map. Feeling adventurous (and the affects of constant eating and ... read more

The fact that I am writing this blog means that the ‘block of flats’ was towed safely through Sydney traffic thanks to Wes’s expert driving, to settle for a week in Narrabeen on the northern beaches of Sydney. Yes, I hear you all moan - another beach. The theme for the last few weeks has been beaches because after Sydney we head inland and don’t hit the ocean again until we get to the Gulf which is approx. 3500kms. We visited the usual tourist sights whilst in Sydney, and so for my fellow Aussies reading the blog, please bear with us while we cover off these ubiquitous Sydney tourist sites for our overseas rellies and friends. Our first outing was a drive to Bobbin Head and Wisemans Ferry - some of my childhood haunts. A great ... read more
