After spending most of our adult working lives in the UK we were ready to make a significant life change and decided to spend some time living in Australia? Our enthusiasm for scuba diving hasn't declined with age and we intend to seize every opportunity to learn about marine life in the Southern hemisphere.
We departed from the UK April 4th 2006 then spent 8 months travelling the east coast and now we live in a lovely area of NSW, Corindi Beach, which is 25 minutes north of Coffs Harbour.

Lord Howe Feb 5th – 12th 2011 Lord Howe is a small volcanic island in the Tasman Sea 570 Km from Port Macquarie. It is officially part of NSW; it is about 11km long and 2.8km wide at its widest point, it was listed as a world heritage site in 1982 and when you get there you see why. Port Macquarie is about 2.5hrs drive south of where we live and the flight to Lord Howe was 1.5hrs, so pretty much round the corner in Australian terms. Everyone we talked to who had been before said a week would not be long enough and everyone was right. When we arrived at the airport in a 36-seater plane (see picture of the runway to see why) we were greeted by our host Ginny and driven the 5min ... read more

It's been a long ambition of ours to snorkel with Humpback Whales and Niue Island is one of the few destinations in the world that you can 'legally' do this. Niue is located between Tonga and the Cook Islands. The Humpback Whales are only there from July to November, we went there at the end of July. We had to fly to Auckland and stay overnight then fly to Niue the next day, crossing the international dateline meant that we arrived in Niue the same day we left Brisbane! There is only one flight in and out a week from Auckland and one shipment a month. Niue is a small independent state perched on top of a sleeping volcano rising steeply from a 3000-4000m deep ocean. The tiny limestone island, about 23 by 18 km rises ... read more

Had a great dive at North Solitary Island on December 30th 2008. The sea temp was 22 degrees so has a way to go yet before it gets to 26 in late summer. The visibility was between 20-25 metres so we were able to see some of the bigger marine life that periodically frequent these islands including: grey nurse sharks, eagle rays, bull rays and approximately 30 to 40 adult guitar sharks who appear to be using the shallow areas as a birthing pool. There were lots and lots of baby guitar sharks buried in the sand. I also found a turtle rubbing himself against a table of hard coral to get rid of parasites and it totally ignored me. This island is north of Coffs Harbour and we dive with Divequest which is based at ... read more

To end 2008 we spent New Years Eve at the delightful rural location called Taylors Arm where John had a gig at the PUB WITH NO BEER- but there was lots and lots of beer! It's south of Coffs Harbour, about 30 kilometers west of Macksville, a very pretty scenic drive from the pacific highway with countryside similar to the lowlands of Scotland. After a very hot bright day, the cool evening proved to be a pleasant relief and the event was perfect, the band played outside undercover though it would have been useful if the publican had mown the grass beforehand for dancing! Spending New Years Eve dancing under under the stars was just fabulous. This pub has lots of character and rustic charm and so do some of the locals, as the clock moved ... read more

We took a last minute holiday in Fiji, Coral Coast; this is a popular winter destination for Aussies. The Fijian people were just delightful at Hideaway resort, the weather was great and we were surrounded by lovely, mature tropical gardens. We booked in for 6 dives, there was a distinct lack of big fish, the locals 'fish to live' and there are 'token' controls in place to prevent over fishing in the area. Our dive guide thought his boat would be trashed if he reported anyone infringing the fishing zones. This is really sad because now there is little chance of the fish stocks replenishing and soon no one will have any fish to eat on this stretch of coast. There were lots of pretty little reef fish and the deep wall drop offs were really ... read more

We've been really busy trying to get the landscaping done on our home since we moved here last September. This was hampered by a very wet month in January. Now the ground is very hard due to the high levels of sun baking the clay and low rainfall of late. After using a pick-axe to break up the soil, John unfortunately tore some ligaments in his shoulder which required a surgical rotator cuff repair. His right arm has been in a sling for the past 6 weeks but he is making good progress now. A frustrating time for John as he couldn't dive, drum or drive. Our front garden faces west and in the summer get really hot so we've planted lots of succulents, cacti and full sun loving plants. The next BLOG will show how ... read more

Thought you may want to see how we are doing with our new home? It's so very different to Swift Cottage, lots of space, big windows, heaps of light and high ceilings, some of our English furniture looks small here.......... Most of the pictures are of the outside, as you can see we have a lot of landscaping to do. Our home is on a corner and we've had a low wall built which will have wooden horizontal slats to finish it. The house is designed to take account of the breezes, solar panels heat our water, a large in-ground concrete tank captures rain water and this is used for the washing machine, toilets and watering the garden. There is no water shortage here, recently we had a week of heavy rain, 6 inches fell in ... read more

Thought you may want to see how our new house is coming along, these are obviously old photos as we move in this Friday! The house is reverse living to take advantage of the ocean views, downstairs we have 2 spare bedrooms, bathroom and study. John was at the house on the deck doing some preparation at Corindi today and saw a humpback whale in the distance, who cool is that? The other photos are of the house we're renting in Woolgoolga (Woopi), this has been our home since January. We've had a few visitors to stay here and so far all have enjoyed the area. The Corindi home has no plants what so ever, so the garden at Woopi is stocked up with pot plants ready to move.....some are from my brother, some have been ... read more

UP THE CREEK We are about 20 minutes from Yuraygir National Park, a beautiful area which protects an expanse of coastland from Corindi to the far north of NSW. There are strong Aboriginal links to the park and the name of the park is a phonetic interpretation of the local Yaygir people. The park consists of vast coastal plains, sand dunes, scenic headlands, pristine beaches, rivers, estuaries and lagoons. There are 6 visitor areas and we were told Station Creek is well worth a visit, so we decided to go there for a picnic when John’s niece and her boy friend stayed with us on their second visit to Woolgoolga. It was a beautiful winter’s day (by Oz standards), sunny and about 19 degrees with a coolish breeze. Sorry, I know its been crap in England ... read more
