We were getting to the stage of our trip where we weren't too interested in checking out all of the ‘tourist spots’ but enjoyed relaxing by the pool and trying to do as little as possible. We landed the perfect powered site at the caravan park where are van was right next to the pool fence. The little girls are really enjoying all of the swimming that they are able to do and their confidence and abilities in the pool are improving every day. (Some good off season training for Surf Life Saving!) Besides stocking up on food, we only went for one outing in Kununurra to the Zebra Rock Gallery. We had heard about this rock from other travellers along the way and were keen to purchase some to manufacture some of our own jewellery. ... read more

The coach journey from Darwin to Kununurra took about 10 hours, including rest stops, which was a bit of a drag but i did get to see more of the amazing scenery. Australia is so varied, much like New Zealand, but wherever I go what really strikes me is the vastness. Not of the country as a whole, but simply in each place, no matter the climate or terrain, you can always see so far, its just endless. Travelling to Kununurra to finally start my job as a stationhand/jillaroo i got excited every time i saw a cow on the side of the road! mostly they have Brahmans here, or Brahman crosses (with red Angus = Brangus, with Shorthorn = Droughtmaster , etc) which are African-looking things, tall and slender with a hump on the point ... read more

Hello, Today we visited a special place in Kununurra, the only one official rum factory in Western Australia, the Hoochery. Interesting place to learn how to make rum out of sugarcane. Up even earlier today (5.50am) to be in time for a slightly more hectic breakfast than what we'd been used to with Jim. Makes sense to be up quickly to make the most of the day but we were almost treading on eggshells with Ian to make sure we packed everything away properly! My tentmate Chelley had lent me her earplugs for her slight snoring problem(!) - I woke up only being able to find one of the earplugs so was joking that it had got lodged in my brain somehow... until I found it under the pillow. After a thorough power shower (i.e. dunking self under water via a big saucepan!), we set off for another bumpy two hour ride out of Mabel Downs. Note to self - don't drink a big cup of tea ... read more

... read more

Beim nachsten Mal gibts Bilder vom Van. Bis dahin...... read more

We decided to camp two days here to take the plane tour over the Bungle Bungles (Purnulu National park) since it’s too far off the main (paved) road for us to get to it on the ground. (We’ve already given away the Gibb River Road because of our inability to handle dirt roads) It was an absolutely amazing ride which also took us over the largest diamond mine in the world, and a huge man made lake that has turned this part of Australia into a huge irrigated fruit basket. ... read more

And so it was back to Kununarra again for more supplies - with all these early starts and fresh air there was no shortage of healthy appetites. We had a bit of time to put in before heading out to our camping spot on an island in the middle of Lake Argyle and went over for a look at the Ord River. Joel once more displayed his excellent driving skills by manuovering us and the trailer in tow over the fast flowing river at the Ivanhoe Crossing. We found a shaded and secluded spot for lunch on the other side and were lucky enough to witness a sea eagle showing its deadly hunting prowess as it swept down on the nearby river. Back in the 4WD we were all very familiar with each other at this ... read more

Derby - what a gem, a real frontier town! Angus refused to come grocery shopping with us, so after setting up the van in the park, we left him with a book and headed into town without him. After collecting most of the items on the afore mentioned list (paid $75.00 for 3 very basic and faded long sleeved mens shirts to fit the 3 of us), a cast net and a bit of food we headed back to the park. It was unbelievably hot and humid - multiple cold shower weather. The locals were having a high old time up and down the main street nearby and this continued until quite late, moving inside to a couple of houses so that loud music could be added to the general a-hootin' and a-hollerin'. Around 10pm, ... read more

Kununurra, this is a great little town, except - like Adelaide - the place becomes a ghost town on Sundays and Public Holidays. Most things are here though, Coles, an IGA, Coffee, Camp Stores, ARB, etc, but because of they are so far away from Perth, they are badly effected by the time zones here. The sun is up by 06:00 and down by 17:00, so the shopping hours are mostly 07:00 to 16:00, although some hold out until 08:00 to open and Government departments are no where to be seen until 09:30. Prices here for foodstuffs, fuel etc aren’t too bad considering the distance from Perth or Darwin, although the continuity of supply seems to be a bit of a problem, because the shelves are often bare. No eggs today at Coles and none are ... read more
