Second entry -On the road again, Alice to Halls Creek, via The Tanami and The Great Sandy deserts. Great feeling, when E, me, the cruiser, Cyt, the trailer and Kimbo our good luck mascot from Tim and Charlotte,(see picture) and a few bottles of good red, turned left off the Stuart onto the Tanami heading West for 6 days crossing the desert into Western Australia and The Kimberleys. Two last calls, to brother Was and sister Jill, then we were out of communication till who knows when? The first of our 100 kms of the 1,100kms up the Tanami were sealed road, so we managed 2 more of our French lessons, c’est si bon!? From then on till the end for 1,100 kms plus some corrugations and beautiful red bull dust played havoc on our ... read more

Australasia » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra By elluco May 14th 2007 Beginning of 52km trip well actually 6km into, but my camera was buried in a waterproof barrel. Croc count is about 5 at this point! My canoe partner, is not the large breasted one, but the young guy. Not a problem, less paddling for me! We set off in the canoe, these are canadian style canoes, so it requires an amount of cohesion and cooperation between paddlers to keep the canoe in a straight line. Theres an initial exchange on the best way to keep going forward in a straight line. My buddy is the typical german, 'I know vat I'm doing and follow my orders'. I dont want to end up in the cooler and as it turns out hes right; but theres ... read more

Australasia » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra By elluco May 14th 2007 The so called mini bungles glad i didnt bother with the maxi bungles!Back from my geretric old people tour. "hey luke, i have got you a canoe partner and she got big cans" says Kenton the hostel owner. After waiting 2 days for this trip and a 11th hour partner for the trip, one would see this as a definite positive. Before I could ponder the plus and minus, he follows up with, they're all waiting for you mate, while cunningly walking me round to the group, "Do you still want to go dont you"? he asks, as I stare at my potential buddies for the next few days. Well, have escaped from the clutches of Katherine, its pissed aboriginal inhabitants, a crappy hostel and the amazing feat of not having a single conversation with anyone in the hostel! Never mind, we are a week down the track 1/52th or something close to it. Ok, since this was the only hostel in town, I had no choice. Get the old lonely planet out, check out the Kununurra section, avoid any hostel that says YHA (youth hostel association) run, read the blab and leave it in the hands of feat! First choice is full up, theres only a YHA and another left. Easy choice. Make the phone call, get to the bus station, get on the bus for a 9 hour trip out of NT to WA. Get met by a friendly, long haired, fat bloke, ... read more

We had a glorious time Broome, very relaxing with reading books fishing and doing a few of the tourist type things. Whilst staying at the resort we “had” to make use of the pool, as we were unable to swim in the ocean due to the Box and Irukandji jellyfish that call cable beach home at this time of year. Wanting to catch a feed proved to be a difficult challenge and I am sure Janie thought a few times that I just went to look at the water. After spending the week in the resort, we checked out and headed over to Roebuck Bay Caravan Park. This is the only park in Broome that is situated on the water, and even though it has a spectacular outlook, it felt very dated and untidy for ... read more

So... not had chance to update for a while have been doing a fair bit of driving and been quite remote places. Since last update with drove from Exmouth to Port Hedland which is really just an industrial type town lots of road trains, trains and miners! It had also recently been hit by a bad cyclone so were lots of trees down and floods. From Port Hedland we were advised to go straight to Broome..about 7 hour drive as there is nothing really in-between. Broome was a really nice place first proper town for a while, had a china town, amazing beech which was stayed near called cable beech (although has a lot of stingers in water... if go swimming advised to have 2 litres of vinegar with you in case) the beach is ... read more

19th Oct. Drove from Fitzroy Crossing To Halls Creek,, better known as Hells Crack and decided it was a one night only stay so we set off at a pace to the China Wall, Old Halls Creek, Palm Springs, and Saw Tooth Gorge. Then we turned the other way and did a big stint out part of the Tanami to Wolf Creek Crater (large Meteorite Crater). On the way we blew a tyre and on the return trip we lost the spotlights, fistly the bolt snapped and then the wiring failed so it was a slow trip out in the dark trying to dodge cattle. There also happened to be an under-age disco in Halls Creek so it was a rowdy evening and the caravan park fence got set on fire. 20th Oct. Drove from Halls ... read more

Zondag 29 oktober. ... read more

Hi all, Thanks to those who have sent messages - great to get news. We are all well and are about to celebrate Lewis' 9th birthday here at Kunnunurra. We had a fight with a rock on the Gibb River rd and came off second best, so waiting to see how much damage - should find out tomorrow. Otherwise the trip is going well and we are visiting some amazing places since the last message - highlights have included Litchfield NP, Douglas Hot springs, Purnalulu (Bungle Bungles) and Emma Gorge at the El Questro Wilderness Resort. We are all well but it is getting very hot - around 38 degrees most days and warm at night so sleeping is tough. Metting Janine's Mum in Broome next week so it will be good to see a familiar ... read more

At lunchtime on Thursday, after giving the 4WD a bit of a run to check whether the radiator bog had sealed the hole, we sadly left our friends Bernie and Anne behind in Kununurra. They were heading east and we were heading west, and so we drove 254km to stay at Spring Creek free roadside camp. And what a stinking hot day to choose to travel. As I think I’ve mentioned before, we don’t use the air-conditioning when we are towing the caravan as it consumes diesel at the rate that Wes does his beer, so we had to travel with the windows down, and the thermometer in the front consul measured 40 degrees. But we were in luck. When we finally arrived at the free camp, we found that it was on the edge of ... read more
