KUNUNURRA. Moving on from Broome, we traveled over 900km heading towards Kununurra. We once again referred to our trusty travel companion, the Camps 5 book. All free overnight camping areas are listed in this book and there are details of the facilities provided on each site. Our main concern is that we can take our dogs there and that the camp site is away from the main road, as the huge 4 sectioned roadtrains make a mighty noise as they travel all through the night. It is good to save a few dollars this way but most of the sites are very dusty and our poor dogs need a bath urgently when we arrive at the next proper caravan site. It is amazing how popular these sites are and are usually full by about 5pm each ... read more

DAY 222 It’s my Dad’s birthday today, I feel a bit sad today that I am not back in England to see him, especially as it is his 70th birthday, oops, sorry Dad, I think I let the cat out of the bag! Happy Birthday! We were out of bed later than usual, I think it was 6.30 and everyone was packing up going somewhere, we were doing the same and heading off towards Victoria River, about 200K’s west of Katherine, and by 8.05 we were all packed up just waiting to jump in to the shower. We said our goodbyes to Weston & Val, Gavin & Mary also a couple of other people that we had really only started to speak to this morning who made us promise to come round and have a ... read more

DAY 221 Today is a date I never forget, today 29 Years ago I started my electrical apprenticeship, with N.G.Bailey and company Ltd in Birmingham England, and I can remember being taken by my Mum and Dads next door neighbour, Don, in his MGB roadster, to the Landrover plant in Solihull and the company was working on the new Range Rover assembly plant, and never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would be reminiscing 29 years later the other side of the world, but I am. We again were packing up today as we didn’t really have any intention of staying over in Kununurra tonight as there is nothing really to see or do, the only thing it did allow us to do was to stock up on provisions, pick up some ... read more

Well we finally started our big trip on Sunday the 17th of May and our first stop was at Gin Gin where we found a lovely parking area next to a park with lots of trees and black cockatoos in the trees. We thought that this was so lovely until we got up the next morning to find that the birds had all roosted in the trees above the car.I don't think I have to elaborate on that one.Had an early start and got through Geraldton where we pulled off at a place called Oakabella Homestead. It was only parking in a paddock on this historic buildings grounds but we were a long way off the road and the only people there so the dogs were able to run free which they really enjoyed. Our next night was also ... read more

Distance traveled 3216km/4060km(79%).Leaving Fitzroy River Lodge early meant that we were once again on the road just after sunrise and as good as the sunsets are, there’s plenty to enthuse about the sun slowly lifting on a distant horizon and then gradually filtering it’s life giving, golden rays across the flat plains. The mystical and majestic boabs standing tall add their own special beauty.Joining the Great Northern Highway we spotted a fellow early traveler and we opted to guess/spot the next car.Sounds like a game for seriously bored kids but background to this is simple……many of the caravans, trailers and boats being pulled around Australia are attached to 4WD vehicles. An armada of Land Cruisers,Prado’s,Pajero’s and a variety of other 4WD models. If you guess any of the first three you have a pretty good chance of being correct. After 45 minutes we ... read more

Before heading into the NT we spent a few days in Kununurra getting undusted, resupplying and checking out the surrounds. We discovered the “Hoochery” - a cane farm distillery with some delightful products (if you like Rum do yourself a favour and mail order yourself the 40% proof bottle, it’s well worth it =) ). We also discovered a delightful new vegetable at the Kununurra markets - Baby Boab roots! They look a bit like a sweet potato and taste quite clean, a bit like a water chestnut. We took a daytrip to Wyndham via another gravel track which took us past a Billabong with an amazing amount of birdlife, set up with platforms for bird watching near a spot called Parry’s lagoon. We got to Wyndham and drove out to the port and then up ... read more

Sep 21 Howard Springs Big4. Good caravan park and has Net4, Big4 internet access. Spent in Darwin CBD. Took in the Smith Mall and all its souvenir shops. Very nice area for shopping, if one was so inclined. Had a bit of a walk along the Esplanade. Really nice, well kept area for walking near the ocean. Low tide so the water was out pretty far. We had planned on dipping our toes in the ocean, but didn’t manage!! Sun Princess ocean liner was in port. Big, big ship. Apparently the Darwin Port is about 2.5 times bigger than Sydney, so we did a harbour tour. Was a dinner/sunset tour. Good food, good sailing vessel (Cape Adieu) and a good time. BYO, which was good price wise. Sorry we didn’t get to any other attractions in ... read more

Oh my days! I have NEVER worked so hard in my life. Day 2 in Kununurra and I've got my first farm job - chipping melon and pumpkin fields. Walking up and down long field rows, pulling out shit loads of weeds for 11 hours a day in 38 degrees heat, jeese louise! Everything hurts. My hands are blistered. I have dripped with sweat in the boiling sun and dripped with being soaked through in heavy heavy rain, whilst kacking myself that the huge bolt of lightening that just struck the other end of the field won't hit me!! I have beautiful tan lines, the white shorts and t-shirt look is so now. Day 1 in the field I thought I was going to die, but I gradually got use to it and managed to stick ... read more

We've spent the last couple of days in Kununurra, which is in the eastern part of the Kimberley region. The rest of the Kimberley isn't as accessible without a car and tours are expensive. On Monday morning we started to walk down to the celebrity tree park by the lagoon, where celebrities have planted trees. It's only about a kilometre to the park but it's so hot here we had to stop before we got there and lie under a tree for a while and then go and sit in a cafe for an hour or two because we both felt sick. We finally got to the park in the afternoon and saw Rolf Harris' tree and Princess Anne's, we didn't recognise any of the other names. The lagoon is gorgeous, freshwater crocs live there but ... read more

We crossed the NT/WA border this morning. Felt like we got up really early because we had to wind our clocks back 2 hours compared to the east coast. We arrived in Kununurra and spent the first day laying around the pool and getting use to the heat. We met the local hairdresser, Kylie is from Grafton and owns her own salon so us girls decided to spend the next morning in the Salon. The next afternoon we went to see the Dam wall at Lake Argyle and then jet along the 55 km long stretch of the Ord river known as Lake Kununurra back to the town. It was a real buzz, some times the water was only cm deep and we saw bats and fresh water crocs. Tuesday we set off down the Gibb ... read more
